Pray they don't change the ISU plates. They changed the university plates in Nebraska as well as the normal plates. The UNL plates are terrible. This image doesn't show how bad they really are. The "Huskers" is actually much darker and makes it that you can't read "Huskers" or the plate number. It just looks like a scribbled mess.

They actually put a hashtag on their plates? That's the dumbest thing I've ever seen.

I couldn't even read Maryland's plates. If Iowa would switch to those ugly things, I'd pay the money to go back to ISU plates. I kinda like New Hampshire's.

Nebraska has an alternate mountain lion version. I'll be choosing those in November whenI have to switch over, instead of the awful things they have now.

Didn't see this posted, and I know how CF loves a good design thread. Iowa to redesign state license plates after 20 years with the same general design.

http://dmreg.co/2tzdeeo

People supposedly will have a chance to vote on 3-5 designs. Thoughts?

Personally I like the current design and I was just thinking about how nice our plates look compared to other states. I don't really want them to change. There are some gaudy, crazy, crappy plates out there, while some are way too simple. Iowa strikes a nice balance I think. It is a form of state marketing and there are a lot of fumbles out there with other states (just look at Nebraska and their state seed sower).

Agree. The current plates seem to be a solid and acceptable design. Beauty is subjective and in the eye of the beholder. That said, if this re-design project doesn't increase costs to the taxpayer, then sounds good.

However, if the re-design project increases costs for the taxpayer, and causes Iowa (DOT) to pay for designers and otherwise justify a job for an employee (or several) at the DOT, I don't think it's worth it. A license plate should be a utility and the DOT should do it's best to keep costs low, which may mean not having a re-design. I hope this isn't wasting taxpayer funds (however small) at a time when state appropriations to secondary education continue to dwindle, our water quality and natural resource initiatives remain horribly poorly funded, the judicial branch is experiencing severe cuts in funding (and the judicial branch already brings in most of the revenue it needs to cover it's budget in court costs and fees), mental health is poorly funded, etc.

Again, as long as this is not costing the taxpayers unnecessary expense, then sounds good. Anybody know the cost (if any) of the re-design?

Another consideration is that Iowa is in the midst (I don't think it's done) of making every plate be changed out for a new version as it reaches 10 years in use. While some are quite "faded" and scratched up, others look just fine, but need to be replaced anyway by this rule/law. That's why I now have Story County plates on my vehicle. I rather liked having out-of-county plates when driving around here...

Nebraska has a state law that we have to get new plates every 5(?) years. So they had 5 years to design a license plate and came up with a guy jerking off.

Maybe we don't highlight the fact that there's nothing but farms and hills in Iowa? I like the red, white and blue one the best.

Meh I'm with you guys. Middle one is my least-disliked.

I don't mind the bottom one but color scheme is pretty bad.

A license plate that just reads "72GR391" (for example) with no county name means nothing unless someone knows all 99 Iowa counties in alphabetical order. If they do, then I'll just tip my cap and go about my business.
I do (although I have to write them down to get them all). Plus many of the county seats. It's a stupid skill, but someone has to have it. :D

That's Osceola (or Warren, depending on if it's the first two or last two).

Regarding the plates - those are ALL really fugly.
Looks like Maureen, Bambi & Big Nose Kate are going to be sporting ISU plates in the future.
