Some truth to this. I think, as you noted, we did try the patience of the freshman QB. You could see his frustration and immaturity boiling over late when he was calling out and ******** at his receivers on incompletions. Not a good look and if I was a receiver I'd be plenty pissed at some ass-hat freshman barking at me on national TV. Acting like a big baby isn't leadership.

It's been an interesting psychological adjustment as a fan as we've developed into a team with a reliable defense. For so many years there it just felt like you couldn't afford to punt the ball away against these high power Big 12 offenses. You just weren't going to get enough stops for things to net out in your favor at the end. But now knowing that our defense will keep us in just about every game gives offensive play calling a whole new purpose.

I agree that playing conservatively is completely fine with this team. What's frustrating to me is that from my (not that great of seat) it looked like we ran through the right side A gap on nearly every first down play. We have a fantastic running back and yes, we want to control the clock. Why didn't we see any of the zone block/cutback scheme we saw vs. WVU/OSU? Why didn't we run the counter to the weak side of the "heavy" set that they ran with such success the last few games?

I think running the ball on first down is fine. I think that the square peg-round hole that we insisted on doing was a little less efficient than what our offense has demonstrated it's capable of.

All of that said, I don't get payed millions to coach and call games. I'm sure CMC knows a lot more than I do. A win is a win.

I'm sorry, but I thought we won. Some of the whining on this board makes me think otherwise. Saturday's game was a great win!

Was just thinking how beating anyone outside of Kansas just a few years ago was a pretty big thing, however that also meant ISU played beyond their talent level. That's shifted, so nitpicking is going to happen just like it does in basketball, but yeah any win is good. Hopefully ISU can get the next two and it's all icing from there.

Also what's shifted is blaming the schedule. I used to say in those lean years if ISU were decent they'd still at least be bowl eligible vs. the schedule, and here we are, seeing some good football leading to common victories.

Get September figured out and the hype train cometh.

Way up there
I loved the first defensive series, they had a 3rd and medium, with a freshman QB on the road, against a team that had 14 sacks over the last two games. Kliffy 100% thought that meant the heat was coming and made a great call with the screen pass unfortunately for him, we didn't blitz and they ended up punting. That set the tone for most of the day.

I don't think anyone was suggesting to let Purdy throw every first down, but when the defense knows what you are going to do, it is easy for them to defend and you put our freshman QB behind the chains consistently. That isn't good either.

I'd like to see us get Montgomery the ball on the edge more. Seems like we love running him right at the other teams' nose guard.

Maybe CMC just plays the odds for a defensive holding penalty to get called.

Ya know, that NEVER happens even though it happened in I think two other college games and I think an NFL game this past weekend alone.

We’re saving it for Herman.

I don't think the stat on undefeated/untied Octobers is getting enough hype - Prior to last year we hadn't had an October with no loses or ties since 1938. And we've done it two years in a row.

That's just crazy. And with 3 wins over top 10 teams, it's not like it was a scheduling quirk.

I'd like to know how many teams have recorded a safety in 3 straight games.

Gonna guess it's very few.

Play calling was boring and predictable. Monty up the middle twice, dropped pass, punt. Campbell needs to hire a OC because he sucks at play calling.

Did you think he sucked at play calling last year too then?

I am in total agreement with this assessment. It's not that we were conservative, it's that we were predictable. There is a difference in the two. Two or three play-action conservative passes on first down would have done miracles. Let our great running back run a few sweeps to keep the defense from crashing down. Etc. We can get that crappy 1-2 yard gain a number of ways, so try them all. Anyway, our great coach won't ever hear my thoughts on this obviously, but that is where I'm at.
