Can you imagine KU without Lawson? Woof. They would have been playing on Wednesday night!
Depends on what you replaced him with. If you just removed him? Yes, obviously we would be a worse team without our best player just as every team is worse without their best player.

Way up there
Lawson was the best player we saw all year, plus he was surrounded by freshman and role players the last month or so. His team was a bit down but he has had a great season, totally deserves to be POY.

I would have to disagree with Fran on this one. Kansas would have been nothing this year without Lawson. Gotta believe most would take Lawson first if you were drafting your Big12 pick-up league.

Was a little surprised when Jon disagreed with Fran's Barry Brown vote how defensive he got.

Fran has gotten pretty snippy lately. There was a block charge call that could have gone either way and he got really defensive before anyone even said anything. He said that is a charge and if you think it was a block learn the rules or something along those lines.

Nope. Embiid was. The difference in their offense and defense efficiency numbers when he was on the floor especially their defense, was HUGE.
Embiid's defensive win share was 1.7. Wiggins was 1.7.

Wiggins offensive win shares was 3.2. Embiid's was 1.8.

Embiid was an excellent defender and terrorized ISU so I get your perspective but Wiggins was the better, more valuable player at the time.

But Embiid has far surpassed him now.

I don't have a problem with either Lawson or Culver getting it. And I'll take Barry Brown on my team any day.

I don't think KU could complain too much about Culver getting it. He's a tough guy to D up.

Culver is just as important to TxT, which accomplished something, as Lawson to Ku, which all but mailed it in last night in Norman. And my bet is Culver goes in the draft before Lawson.

None of which are relevant to the discussion.
1) Importance to team
2) Team performance
3) Draft position.

Lawson is best overall player. Culver is also deserving. Brown and Shayok a distant 3rd.

Lawson should probably win it. He brings it every night, as does Culver.

Shayok and Brown have disappeared in a few games.

Me thinks Culver wins it pending Saturday.

Maybe I'm misreading what you are saying, but if you don't use the 3 criteria above, how do you define the best player?

That doesn’t tell the whole story. I can’t find it now but the defensive and offensive efficiency was markedly different without him. There is a reason that team was not good without Embiid. You also have to remember he was not near the guy he was from the first month to when they were playing in conference.

Many coaches would tell you the same.

It's idiotic to suddenly make it the "best player on the team thats finished first". Kansas has won 14 straight Big 12 titles but only had 5 Big 12 PoY winners in that time. So NOW everyone thinks the winner must be a guy from the team that wins? How convenient.

Lawson has been the best player and should win.

I tend to agree that Lawson was the best player but even Bill Self said, that for this year anyway, the best player on the best team should be POY.

https://247sports.com/college/kansa...Lawson-Barry-Brown-Jarrett-Culver--129545941/

"Barry Brown, if they win the league he should be player of the year in the league," Self said on the show. "If we win the league Dedric should be player of the year. If Iowa State wins the league, [Marial] Shayok should be player of the year. If Tech wins the league, [Jarrett] Culver should be player of the year."

If Lawson is POY it means his team's performance is not important. I'm sorry but I just don't buy that for a minute. Ku finishes third or fourth in the B12, after being slotted #1 in the country preseason, the Adidas-purchased streak ends, but Lawson gets it because of personal accomplishment. Not happening.

Oh, I'm fine. It's championship week. And no FBI doings in Manhattan.

It is neither the MVP award nor the Best Pro Prospect award.
