oh they finally figured it out that no one should be expected to be tipped on tax. maybe my decade long boycott needs to be revisited.
TBH, like I said I dont know of may places that expected a tip on tax.
Not trying to start an argument just that i haven't seen it. Didnt know if you've been somewhere specific where that's occurred that I should avoid.

maybe where they tally the tip for you they do it pretax but besides that the tipees expect it on the total including tax? a tippee may be able to chime in here and set it straight.

I think you’re splitting hairs though. On a $100 restaurant bill and if you go with the standard 15% in Des Moines, you’re paying an extra $1.05 if including the tax.

I tip about half of what I normally would on take out at a sit down restaurant. For example, PF Changs or Applebees. If it is a fast casual place that I'm just taking to go, I don't tip at all.

We should discuss the pay it forward at coffee shops though. A few weeks ago I was waiting in the drive through lane at Starbucks for a long time. I get to the front and the person in front had paid for me. The cashier asks me if I want to pay for the next person. Begrudging I said yes. He then tells me their bill is $16.50 compared to my $4.50 bill. I pay it because I already have a $20 bill out and I'm trying to be more generous. But I'm still sort of irritated about it which means that I am not that generous in real life ;)

I’m all for paying it forward, but I feel like doing it at a Starbucks is the wrong place for the sentiment.

There's a lot of good places to do it.
One that we've done before is if we are in an airport bar/restaurant and see a soldier in uniform, we'll quietly ask the waiter/waitress to put it on our tab without telling them who got it.

I’d say it is probably 50-50 on pre or post tax.

So here's a question. For the places with specials (kids eat free, free appitizer, 1/2 off) do you tip the total, or the pre special? I almost always tip based on the pre special total on food, especially with kids.

Also, I struggle with tipping based on the bill rather than the work done. I've had better service at places like Hickory Park than expensive steak houses. Why should the wait staff at the steak house get more than at Hickory Park?

I have no absolute rule about carryout tipping. For delivery, bartending and table-waiting, there's a general custom to follow, but pick-up is more vague.

One cue I use to decide: If eatery has a tip-jar at the register, I'm likely to throw in a bill or two, loosely based on cost of my order.

I tip based on the sale price. After all, the whole point of a sale is to get you to come in at that price.

However, if i get my meal comped due to a kitchen error or something, i'd still tip based on the amount the meal would have been.

The "pay it forward" concept is very weird. I think somehow people feel like they are doing something really nice. Not a fan. I would go ahead and re-pay my bill. Let the staff decide what to do with the overpayment by the person in front of me. Don't obligate me to play your do-gooder game.

The concept itself is good. The concept is “do something good for two people and then they do something good for two people and so forth and so on.” It got turned into a weird “I’m paying for the person behind me at this overpriced coffee place and then they’ll pay for the person behind them at the same overpriced coffee place and then the homeless person on the street in the front will still starve.”

No tipping in Europe until they find out you're American and then they will sometimes ask if you want to leave a tip. We typcially will leave a small tip if we were there for awhile.
