A lot places split it up.No.
Why would I tip a to go order? The cooks did all the work, not a waiter or waitress.

Who or where did this?
Really? Most receipts that I have when they break it down to 15/18/20 are pre tax.everyone tips on the total including tax and everywhere expects a tip on the total including tax

TBH, like I said I dont know of may places that expected a tip on tax.oh they finally figured it out that no one should be expected to be tipped on tax. maybe my decade long boycott needs to be revisited.
I think you’re splitting hairs though. On a $100 restaurant bill and if you go with the standard 15% in Des Moines, you’re paying an extra $1.05 if including the tax.maybe where they tally the tip for you they do it pretax but besides that the tipees expect it on the total including tax? a tippee may be able to chime in here and set it straight.

He boycotted restaurants for a decade because he doesn’t know math.
I tip about half of what I normally would on take out at a sit down restaurant. For example, PF Changs or Applebees. If it is a fast casual place that I'm just taking to go, I don't tip at all.
We should discuss the pay it forward at coffee shops though. A few weeks ago I was waiting in the drive through lane at Starbucks for a long time. I get to the front and the person in front had paid for me. The cashier asks me if I want to pay for the next person. Begrudging I said yes. He then tells me their bill is $16.50 compared to my $4.50 bill. I pay it because I already have a $20 bill out and I'm trying to be more generous. But I'm still sort of irritated about it which means that I am not that generous in real life![]()
There's a lot of good places to do it.I’m all for paying it forward, but I feel like doing it at a Starbucks is the wrong place for the sentiment.
I’d say it is probably 50-50 on pre or post tax.TBH, like I said I dont know of may places that expected a tip on tax.
Not trying to start an argument just that i haven't seen it. Didnt know if you've been somewhere specific where that's occurred that I should avoid.
So here's a question. For the places with specials (kids eat free, free appitizer, 1/2 off) do you tip the total, or the pre special? I almost always tip based on the pre special total on food, especially with kids.

The "pay it forward" concept is very weird. I think somehow people feel like they are doing something really nice. Not a fan. I would go ahead and re-pay my bill. Let the staff decide what to do with the overpayment by the person in front of me. Don't obligate me to play your do-gooder game.
