ISU is a good job with a winning traditional and strong fan support. Those are positives that ISU can promote to a new coach.

IMO there are scenarios where ISU can attract a P5 coach and that would be:
  • ISU is willing to pay the new coach between $3.5-$4.0M AND willing to pay the new coaches buyout.
  • The current P5 coach views ISU as better job security than current job. For instance ISU is willing to provide a 4-5 year guaranteed contract and his current school is not eager to make a long-term commitment (aka just willing to do 1 year renewals).
  • The coach views ISU as a better opportunity to win.
  • Coach has been at his current school for an extended period of time, but winning has leveled off. Also the coaches appeal is starting to wane on the fan base. For example, during Roy Williams final years at KU, there were rumblings by the KU fanbase questioning his ability to get KU to Elite 8's and beyond.
Here are some guys who might fit some of the above criteria:
  • Bobby Hurley - ASU
  • Thad Boyle - CU
  • Wayne Trickle - Oregon St
  • Chris Collins - Northwestern
  • Mark Turgeon - Maryland
  • Ben Howland - Miss St
  • Frank Martin - So. Car
But as mentioned above, things can get complicated. They have to like the salary ISU is offering, ISU must be willing to pay any buyout, the coach has to be willing to uplift their family and they have to view ISU as a better long-term opportunity to win.

IMO it is much easier to hire a P5 assistant or a head coach from MVC, MWC, Big East or Mid American.

I'd be shocked if we pay our next MBB coach 3-4 million/yr. That's a lot of scratch for someone who has never won a game for ISU.

We got Johnny from Michigan.

I would rather have a solid assistant coach with p5 experience over the mid major crapshoot.

Johnny was the 9th highest paid coach in the big 10. Jim Dutcher was his assistant, and made more than Johnny did from his first day at Minnesota. He went from 33K/yr total compensation, to 45K/ yr base, plus another 50+ in off the court income.

I can’t imagine it would be anyone but TJ, but if he decides he’s happy in Vegas, it will be someone with head coaching experience.

also, can anyone explain the fascination with Thad Matta? I mean he was a good coach, but I don’t think anyone ever thought of him as elite

Probably the five big 10 regular season conference championships and the two final 4s. Also won the big 10 tournament four times.

So is he healthy, and able to handle the rigors of the job 5 years since he stepped down to health reasons?

I don't know if we are in the running for an 'elite' Chris Beard type coach, but Matta is certainly 'good', and available. Who knows what he wants to do?
Matta won at Butler, has won four Big10 titles, been to two FinalFours. He's a proven winner.
The chances of Matta being the next Cyclone coach are low ($$$), but I'd take him over any of the guys mentioned on CF.

Truthfully, probably the funniest thing I’ve read was someone on some forum talking about how they wanted beard when prohm was hired.

I wondered how hiring an assistant at Angelo State here in Texas would have gone over.

No clue. You asked if people thought of him as elite. I would say multiple final 4s and 5 regular season conference titles in a p6 would make someone elite.

Is chris beard elite? He has won way less than matta. Beard has 1 final 4. A regular season conference win in the big 12, 1 in the sun belt, and one conference tournament championship in the sunbelt.

Wasn’t his rep always as a great recruiter, decent bench coach?

people are starry eyed on this board about beard. He’s definitely excellent, and loves where he’s at.

Health issues make Matta unrealistic for availability. The attraction of his resume, though, is understandable.

Matta might fall into a sort of Beilein category. ISU isn't likely to land proven coaches like that. Our challenge is to find a current version of 'That Type of Eventual P5 Coach."

I mean, if he’s looking for a return to the sidelines, Iowa State would make sense for him. No real pressure to win right away, and he can groom his successor.

he would definitely be more likely than Beilein.

I think Coach Prohm is a guy most of us wanted to see succeed. He has done a good job recruiting and and sent multiple guys to the NBA and runs a clean program. Much like Greg McDermott something did not click here and I hope he finds a job that he can succeed at.

I am now in the crowd that I hope he finds a job to move onto so we don't have to fire him and pay a buyout. This season even with the COVID challenges I have a hard time finding positives that if we stay the course with Prohm things will get better. If you watch the women's BB games those players lay it all out there and you don't question the effort and right now I can't say the same about the mens team.

We got Johnny at least 3 years removed from his Final 4 Team. Johnny's last two teams finished under .500 in Big 10 play and finished around 6th in a 10 team conference. Johnny was starting to feel the heat.

Also back when Johnny was hired at ISU most head coaches made less than $100k annually, so there wasn't the extreme difference in the top and bottom paid coaches.

Matta is much more likely than Beilein, although that isn't saying much as there is a about a zero chance of paying Beilein the salary he'd command.
If Matta does want to coach again he'll probably be too rich for JP as well. That's why my first two horses are TJ and DD.

You should kick the tires on Altman and see if he has the same interest he did 6 years. He would be the only current head coach that I would feel comfortable giving 3 million a year and still know we will be going to the NCAA tournament almost every year.

That would be one more than we have had in the last 75 years.
