Passion over function. Haha. That’s what you get when you have so many D1 level basketball coaching minds on one site. The super intense analysis like “What about Xs and Os!?!?!?” and “We need a guy that can make these kids care and hustle more!”

Not at all. No need to flame away, good thoughts and great post. I think many of us, including me were hopeful we might get an outside coach who was more proven, older or younger. Why is this so hard for people to understand? Yes, we will support TJ once the season starts, the same way we supported Prohm, Hoiberg, McDermott, Morgan, etc. Or do you guys think that those of us unhappy with the hire will cheer against the coach (and against ISU)? That is beyond dumb. Blindly supporting the hire right away does not make you a "better fan".
However, it still does not change the fact that the "hiring process" was an absolute sham. If you think that the process had been going on for weeks/months and many candidates were contacted, well then JP could sell you some oceanfront property in Ames. The fact is that most schools try to hire proven winners, young up-and-comers, or seasoned veteran coaches. TJ is none of those. Look, the reality is we're hiring a coach who has been mediocre at best in worse conferences than the B12. And we expect him to make the jump to greatness in one of the toughest conferences in the nation.
I hope to God he does well, because that would mean that ISU would be doing well. But I see all the mid-major coaches making the tourney, young coaches, coaches who went from big conferences to smaller ones who may want another crack at the big leagues and I think to myself: None of those coaches would want to coach in the Big12? ALL of these guys and their agents really turned down the ISU job? Are all these guys making $3-5 million a year, so we could not afford them? Again, really doubt it.
This was a lazy, cheap hire by JP to go back to his friend/guy he always wanted as head coach/friend of the program. Since we'll likely never know who interviewed and who didn't, they can say whatever they want about how extensive the process was and we'll just have to take their word for it. But if you tell me the "best candidate" was a guy with mediocre results at mid majors, don't expect me to be excited and jumping out of my seat for that.
And one more thing, being an alumni/from Iowa/or loving the program is never a pre-requisite for a head coach. Some of the best coaches are not alumni of the universities they coach. That type of connection is really overrated.
Anyway, flame away.
OK, lol. Keep working on that close of yours. All of you people. No, not all.Yah..every successful young coach has tons of high level experience...every marquee coach started just like TJ ..with little or no high level experience. All of you people act like Jamie had Big money $$$$$ options. Where were all of our rich farmers, vets, and engineers willing to shell out the cabbage to buy a "top shelf" coach..or posters b####ing about Jamie or TJ? I rest my case.
Maybe get over thinking you know it all?Get over what? Is someone calling for him to be fired?
LOL. You know a lot. I'll give you that. I even sort of enjoy reading your posts, most of the time.Hard to do when I do.
I don't either. Good post. Many fans on here just like to take things a bit too far, IMO.I'm not deriding him. Just saying I'd rather give it time and let him prove himself before I become a huge fan of his. I don't see a problem with that.
God I hate this PC world we are living in. I was hoping that Pollard would actually have a real coaching search, knowing if he could not get his guy, then TJ would always be there as a fallback. But when we hire him within 24 hours of parting ways with Prohm, says it all.
TJ was always the guy, OK, so now he is the coach at ISU, the floor is very low, he wanted this opportunity 6 years ago, and Pollard wanted to give it to him then. I will support him because I love ISU, but I was also one that wanted to give Prohm this season, and look how that turned out.
We better win, or this could come back to bite Jami in the rear-end.
Pollard made a bad decision in hiring TJ. Go cyclones!I know a lot of peopling will disagree with this take, but continuing to complain about how Pollard making a bad decision in hiring TJ is pretty much the same as not supporting him. Once the decision has been made, it’s best to get on board, IMO.
I think most folks are just still salty after witnessing a once in a generation team descend into level of awfulness in the Round of 32.
Kansas can afford to pay over $7m, and we can’t even break $3m+ for a big name.
