Do employers typically make “formal” job offers to prospective employees if said prospective employee tells them they don’t want the job?
You believe the Lions actually made that offer without meeting with Campbell?

An NFL team? Hell no, they have their answer before a "formal" offer is made. Today's reports are just arguing semantics.

You believe the lions, who want this to go away, would be using the phrase "formal offer"?
Why wouldn't they say Dan is the only person they talked numbers with?

of course they will say they got their guy

i still dont believe they offered campbell that much money and full control though.
I thought Dodd said that he had confirmed the offer but wasn't able to confirm the control part of it. I doubt they would offer full control to a first time NFL coach unless he was already a legend (multiple NC) coach at the P5 level - and even then, it is doubtful.

The good thing about this news is that it may dissuade other teams from trying to go after Campbell.

yeah he said something like he heard from a reliable source or something but couldn't actually confirm it.

My read on this situation: the Lions reached out to Matt Campbell to gauge his interest and threw out a starting figure of 8-year, $68.5M to get talks started. That is essentially the contract that Rhule got with Carolina (7-year, $60M), both $8.56M/yr. CMC might have had team control as one of his requests/demands, or he may have stopped pursuing the job after him and Jamie began extension talks.

Either way, I'm guessing that Matt's talks with the Lions never got as far as a formal offer, which is the operative word in the reporting from Birkett. And in the end, Matt Campbell stuck with the good guys.

Now the DMR has released the chain on junkyard dog Randy Pete. He's on the first flight to Detroit to nail them down on their definition of "formal".
The Lions better not mess with 'Don't make me break legs' Peterson.

Just Show him picture of a tent and a space heater and he’ll run away panicked without getting one answer.
