We might get the Charlie/Dan combo and all will be alright again. The five wins would quickly be forgotten...htch their horses up to our bandwagon.

I'm don't want to prejudge any of the candidates, but of the coordinators that I've heard mentioned the one I like is Brent Veneables. He's young, successful, familiar with the big XII, played at KSU, born in Kansas so he'd be man enough to handle some cold weather, and he would be familiar with recruiting in the Big XII.

I have a positive gut feeling about BV.

Good resume, except gave up a ton of points in 2008. Also looks like Clark Kent but won't hold that against him.

I've thought he would be a fantastic hire from the get go, but I don't know how realistic it is. You would think that he would go ask Dan what his thoughts were, and I don't know how many good things he would have to say about the man who basically forced his resignation.

I hope that Dan still looks at Iowa State favorably, and he would definitely speak favorably of us publicly. Privately, though, I'm not sure.

It's a great point. I would not mind getting a coach that's been doing good things without the nation's best talent (See Patterson).

A couple of advantages that I see for Veneables is that he is from the midwest and he's familiar with the Big XII. He is also 10 years younger and I think he would bring tremendous energy to the school. He has learned from two pretty good coaches Snyder and Stoops.

I've always seen Charlie Strong mentioned in various coaching searches, but he stays at Florida. Is there a reason for that?
Also, one of the knocks on Chizik (at least from Paul Clark) is that he built his rep on talented players. Isn't this the same situation with Strong? He has coached defense at three schools: Florida (for the most part), Notre Dame, and South Carolina. That's a lot of talent...

South Carolina rarely has talent to match the rest of the SEC and Florida, in the early 90's coming off probation didn't have a wealth of talent back then either... The time at South Carolina is one of the things that impressed me most...

as sad as it is, with the culture in the south, the fact that Strong also has a white wife could work against him down there, who knows...

Patterson is, and has been from the start, the best coach we've been talking about, but he's about as realistic as Bill Belichik, imo. Yet, for some reason his name hasn't died. Please, god, let his wife run that household, and let her be homesick...

Pick our coach depending on who wins the BCS: Strong/Venables? That might take too long for a coach...

I see Patterson as a long shot, but the guy who would need the least time to develop a winner. Strong might be looking like the best option if it comes down to going the coordinator route. I would expect to see some immediate progress, but the turnaround would be more at the pace that Mangiano experienced at KU.

One option that I would take a hard look at before closing the deal with anyone else would be Derek Dooley. I'm impressed with the bloodline, Saben background, NFL experience, recruiting responsibilities, ties to talent hotbeds, and the improvement that he has demonstrated since he has been at LaTech.

One thing I wonder about Venebles is if he would tend to go JUCO heavy since he was one of the many JUCO players brought into K-State in the 90's...

I like him, but will he embrace the cold weather? Same for Patterson. Those guys have been living in the South for a long time now. I've got to believe that may have factored into Chizik's decision to go back to Auburn.

I would be happy with either Venables or Kevin Wilson off the OU staff. But I'm not holding my breath. Wilson is not always used to great talent. He made the offense go at Northwestern too.

Strong spent time at Notre Dame and Southern Illinois so at least he has been in the cold a little...

Steve this is the first I've heard of Derek, but you've peaked my curiosity. He is a very intriguing candidate.
