$5M per month = $60M annual. I get where you are aiming for, but I think that's the wrong bar you are jumping over. First, for the Pac12, $30M might be the bar, not $60M. Second, it doesn't have to be ALL subscriptions - ad revenue matters a lot.

Big12 now gets about $3.5M per game. ESPN/Fox make some money over and above that as profit, at least in theory. So the ad revenue ought to be higher than $3.5M average. So my calcs above aren't too far off, I think.

Assume ISU games average $3M per game, and give them credit for half since 2 teams in the game. That means they bring roughly $20M. If games were broadcast on the Pac12 network, then they would also get the ESPN/Fox share on top.

So back to subscribers. Now we need to find $10-20M annual at $5 per month. That's 200-300k subscribers. That still feels like a hell of a lot, but that's only 10% of Iowans. If you count cable subscribers, then you probably get there. Probably not a lot of Pac network subscriptions in Iowa today.

That's a lot of math that I am not 100% confident about, but I think ISU isn't far off from adding net value to the Pac12 from a TV standpoint. Now, the B1G otoh....

I think that’s roughly correct….I agree, my guess is we could maybe hold our own for the pac where we don’t hurt them and due to the time zone maybe can help, there us so much dead weight in the pac it’s a lot easier, but I have no idea how you spin it to the big ten

They also bought the WWE Network. They've hit the overpaying for content and hoping phase of the 'streaming revolution'.

Had WWE Network since maybe 2014 and when they switched to Peacock we let it go.

The networks have to realize that they have always offered free programming and it will take a very specific event or show to get eyes.

We bought ESPN+ for the Clones and it was basically a swap for Cyclones.tv. I wouldn't take money to stream Notre Dame on Peacock.

I really doubt they agree to come past the last week of October. But that said, Texas and their gigantic egos are coming in November so who knows.

I would have no problem giving Tx the Philadelphia Eagle fan treatment and pelting them with snowballs when they come out.

I would aim every one of them at Sarks head. He hasn’t called a play yet but I just know I will deeply loathe him.

Where would a person find tv ratings for games? I'd happily do some real statistics on it if I could find the data. My google-fu is failing me at the moment. But I can run some hypothesis tests against things like network, kickoff time, conference affiliation, FBS/FBS vs FBS/FCS, P5/P5 vs P5/G6, etc. I could even try running some regressions to determine which combinations produce the highest/lowest expected viewership. But first I need the data.

To me, this does not sound like fun ;). More power to you though, hope someone can provide you with the info.

Not yet. The feds have only been petitioned to get involved. The feds have to decide to get involved before the feds are actually involved.
Technically, a senator is a federal employee. And 'involved' does mean the recipient of a request. But, I'm just being petty.

Why did they add Rutgers and Maryland then? What do they bring to the conference other than big TV markets? If it was about better rivalries and balance wouldn't Pitt and Syracuse been better schools?
Different time. Different thinking. Here's a thought which might get some whiplash. Movies are made all over the world. Do you think they have higher viewership in the area where they were made? Certainly, not a bankable amount. That's for sure. It's about the 'product' and the 'marketing' of that product. Targeted marketing is now. Blanket marketing is gone. That's the future. That's where the money is. The 'product'.

This reads like it was written by a UT alum and the comments are all whiny excuses.

They knew how much time was left on the GOR , terms of the media contract, and conference bylaws they helped write when they chose to accept the invite from the SEC.

They chose to do this to their athletes, staff, and fans.

Looks like game by game ratings can be found here:

Don't know where you can get the data, but Blum's analysis doesn't consider numerous confounders: quality of opponent, kickoff time, our record, etc. The first is obvious -- we get on major networks when we have a high-profile opponent, hence higher ratings. Also, why is ESPN a "major network" and ESPN2 not? I've never heard of an instance where you have one of these and not the other.

I think every locale that has access to ESPN would have access to ESPN2 but consider the number of casual locations that will put a TV (or 2) on ESPN to cover the "sports crowd". They probably don't even know they have ESPN2. Then those casual viewers at those locales are only exposed to mothership ESPN. I'm not talking sports bars here but hotel lobbies, regular bars, airports, etc.

Yep, exactly. I have access to tools that can cut through all those relationships that I use for work.

ETA: And I'm taking a staycation this week, so I have time to play around with it.

"Also briefly wanted to touch on KU Athletics," (Ku Chancellor) Girod began. "As you probably saw, hard to miss quite honestly, the fact that the University of Texas, the University of Oklahoma have announced their intention to leave the Big 12 and go to the SEC, Southeastern Conference. That would occur really in about four years, which is when kind of all contracts and everything will be coming to a close."

Continued Girod: "We sort of anticipated there would be a shuffling of the deck about that point in time because that's when all the media contracts will shift. And so [I'm] working closely with our colleagues at the Big 12. We're going to be very thoughtful about how we move through this process." 247
