Now as much as I hate to say this, I have actually come to terms with it. Whoever we get, he has to be a guy that wont be scared away by the weather in Iowa. Also hurtful to say is that, this has to be in at least the top 3 criteria.

I really like Charlie Strong after reading of his accomplishments. Looking at him and all the other guys mentioned in this thread, it's obvious to me that there are several capable candidates that would be able to keep the fan base (and the players) excited.

I've always wondered why Strong has never been considered more in the past for other jobs. Maybe he should sign on with Jimmy Sexton and then we would likely hear his name in connection with every opening that comes about.

At any rate, he is a fantastic coach but I am really hoping we don't turn over the keys to our program to someone that has no driving experience...I would prefer we get a guy with legitimate HC experience this time around as opposed to a top assistant.

I mentioned Derek Dooley a few days ago but he does not seem to be on the radar. I know he got a look at Miss St but they went with the Florida OC. Maybe the fact that Dooley has a dual role at La. Tech (he is both head FB coach and AD) is either keeping him there or keeping people from approaching him. He has a great pedigree, resume, and some success as a HC.

I vote no to Charlie Strong. He may be good somewhere, but I want a head coach and no college coordinators this time around. Bob Stoops worked out well when he went to OU from Florida, but let's be honest about that situation compared to our own.

Charlie may also be considered a strong recruiter, but the jury is out in my book. Unless your name reaches across the land (which almost no coordinator's name does), then at ISU you have to be able to sell the school. At Florida, the school sells itself. There are kids outside of the state that want to play at Florida without ever stepping foot on campus. I think realistically, you can only say that about a few in-state players thinking that about ISU. If recruiting is a desired quality (which it should be), I want a guy who has recruited much better than ISU at a school in a similar situation to ISU meaning it doesn't have geographical advantages or that they have to get the kids on campus to sell the school. Don't get me wrong, ISU can sell itself once it gets the kids to visit, but that is very hard sometimes (i.e. get the kids to take an official visit).

So at least with the pool of candidates we seemingly still have, I say no to Charlie Strong. Too much of a Chizik risk in my book. No reason to stay long term, and no idea how good of a head coach he is. The college landscape has changed at ISU and everywhere else. The excitement Jamie has tried to build is a double-edged sword. I don't think if we were hiring a young Dan McCarney this time around as a hot young coordinator (an Iowan who probably wants to be at ISU), then I don't think you see Dan last 12 years like he did the first time around because the fan expectations have been raised and the patience lowered.

Actually Charlie does have some head coaching experience. He was the interim head coach for the Peach Bowl after the Zooker was fired. Unfortunately for Charlie it didn't turn out real well. I like the fact he has at least spent a little time coaching in the Midwest with his 3 years at ND. I believe the farthest North Gene had ever coached at was Clemson.

Florida also goes head to head with alot tougher schools for recruits. It's in a small town in the middle of nowhere Florida. They don't have the big city nightlife, beaches, or celebrities (besides Erin Andrews and Mark from the original Road Rules). Miami and Florida State guys love to rag on Florida about being a redneck school, etc...

If you want to draw comparisons, South Carolina in the SEC is pretty similar to Iowa State in the Big XII.

Like I said before, I really think Strong would be loyal to the school that gives him the first chance. He's been in the game longer than Chizik, especially the major college game. Untill the racist climate in the south changes I don't see him leaving for any SEC schools...

I'm not sure if Jamie will risk a Gene Chizik Jr. hire. It might be a sexy hire, and the players might stay because they love the guy. But do we need or want a coach that stays 3 years, maybe 4?

This guy would be awesome! Plus he is learning from the best, DMac!!! :jiggy:

I'm thinking our guys would instantly want to stay, and our Florida recruiting would improve dramatically.
