I think USC is basically Miami at this point. Its best days are past it. Fertile recruiting ground, great weather, strong history, private schools with wealthy & connected alumni… and yet they continue to underwhelm. In fact, both have been surpassed by better brands and better teams in their own conferences (Oregon, Clemson) over the last decade.

Of the two, USC could rise higher than Miami. But both have an uphill battle to get where they were in the early 00’s.

Plus USC has to compete with the Dodgers, Lakers, Rams and even the Clippers now. Even Southern Californians can’t do everything no matter how hard they try.

Agree that entire list is wishful thinking. Campbell's name gets thrown around because no media member seems to understand why he likes it here. Fickel and Cinci are similar.

I don't understand why Franklin's name is on every job. Is it his agent shopping him, trying to get a better contract with Penn St? Dude makes a lot of money at a school that could pay him a lot more if they wanted.
Some of the national guys who are really connected in the coaching world are finally learning that Campbell and Fickel are more program builders. Also, Campbell has a reputation in the coach circles as something of a boyscout (i.e. no money in McDonalds bags), which is why you aren't seeing his name with the LSU job.

The Franklin thing seems to be because there has been some internal politicking at Penn St with some people still being loyal to Joe Paterno, and think that Jay Paterno should take over. He may be hitting a ceiling there because of the internal power struggle.

I think the idea is that with PSU and Franklin there might be a sense that a change of scenery might be mutually agreeable. Franklin might be feeling a little heat, as they aren't going to make a CCG for yet another year. Not to the point they'd be ready to fire him, but enough that if he has a good offer elsewhere he might want a fresh start, and I don't think at this point PSU would try to match an offer to keep him.

I don’t blame anyone for getting out of Happy Valley at the first good opportunity. It’s just yucky for the non-PSU cult members.

USC has a lot of reasons as to why it is an appealing job! Do those reasons appeal to Matt Campbell...no idea! But to shrug USC off is wrong. Oregon is a concern regionally...but after that there isn't one! And it wouldn't take long for the national media to fall in love with USC again once/if a new coach gets things rolling! I think USC should suck it up and (re)hire Lane Kiffin! It would be entertaining for those of us who are not USC fans! And for USC...it might work!

There isn't a single person on that list that I could even remotely think "yeah, I can see him having more success there than where he is now..."

I have no idea what kind of staff Tomlin would put together at USC...so who knows with him...but the other three would need to rethink their offensive philosophies if they end up on that campus! Winning games 21-17 might be good for coaching...but it would bore that community! Winning 10 games consistently would work...but unless it is an "exciting" brand it could have trouble getting noticed they way the school would hope in that market.

Honestly if we lose a coach next year, I'd suspect it would be Tom Manning... He already left once and if an opportunity opens up for him as a HC somewhere (I'm thinking MAC/Mtn West/etc) I could see him taking it.

And no, I'm not in the camp who wants him gone - I think a huge part of our success has been coaching retention.

Right now Campbell has it all. With a great salary and a fan base that is "forever true," I can't think of any situation that could pry him away from what he experienced last Saturday. He's got unfinished business right here in Ames...beating Iowa twice and getting us into the CFP. The only box left to check will be including ISU when the TV pundits talk about the blue bloods.

Jason Candle is on a bit of a hot seat at Toledo. I could see Manning taking that job if it were to open.

Well...I get what you are saying and I do agree in part. But there are situations out there that appeal to most coaches. I will never know how Matt Campbell feels about his current job but he has arguably done as good a job as any head coach in the nation since he arrived in Ames. He just might think that about himself as well. Again, I have no idea...but what if he deems an opportunity to take a different job as being a step to the level where he truly believes it sets himself and his staff up to annually compete for a national title? That might pry him away...but I don't know Matt personally so I don't know. I would hope/guess he aspirations of winning a national title at some point in his coaching career. That said...I hope he is in Ames another 20+ years!!!
