I do remember thinking how difficult it must be to throw (for the QB) when putting the pads on in the 70's (the very few times I did, Ha).

The old pads were moderately restrictive, IMO. Those who have worn the newer pads, how much easier is it? I know you can't compare the old with the new, but is it relatively easy to throw? With the old pads it was a bit of a trial. I'm sure the college and pros had the best of their day, but still.

It's funny how many people complain about the current helmet and jersey shades not matching, but then hold up the Earle Bruce era uniforms as fantastic.

Those 1970s uniforms had four different shades of "gold" -- helmet, jersey trim, number screen-print, pants.

Which is why I said the helmet is the right color. I'm not a huge fan of the gold in those jerseys although it's better than our current gold.

We don’t need to change we just need variations of our throwbacks. Look at what Minnesota does using the old gold in their uniforms. We could do something similar. As far logos, same thing. Whether that’s having a jack trice helmet decal, the Orr tornado or the Cyclones in script. That’d give us a good variety of logos to use while not straying away from the logo that’s actually nationally known.

2023 marks the 100th anniversary for the death of Jack Trice. If there was ever an opportunity for a great throwback uniform it will be next year!

Oklahoma State does a great job mixing it up with throwbacks and modern uniforms.

They are amazing at mixing and matching.

It's dumb we can't at least do it as well as Minnesota. Their jerseys/helmets/combos are much better than ours with a similar color scheme.

I agree. The impression I get is that Campbell doesn’t like variety.

Those 70s era jerseys are the perfect illustration on why they ISU fandom will never really come to agreement on what our jerseys should look like. Since the post-war era, Iowa State has had basically a different look every 5 to 10 years, and every look seems to have its proponents and detractors, usually driven by nostalgia.

For those that don't have strong nostalgic ties to any particular look, its easy to default to what ISU wore when the teams were successful in hopes to bring back that past success. The kicker there is we don't have much as far as a golden age of ISU football to call back to: the best eras being the Earle Bruce years, and now (the Campbell years).

To me, the Bruce-era jerseys are a mess with the 4 shades of gold and 3(?) shades of cardinal. I feel like some of the flaws of those jerseys are hidden by the fact that pictures from that era all seem to have a red/orange tint to them. But the "Beat Iowa" throwbacks from 2007 really show how haphazard the look is.

That was in 2007 for one game. I'd bet we could do a better job matching with modern technology. Earl Bruce throwbacks should make an appearance every season.

Matching the the original look doesn't fix that the original is a messy jersey design to begin with.

And why would we want to throwback to these anytime other than 2027? The highlight moments for those jerseys was "Beat Iowa" and the Peach Bowl, both games ISU lost. Why keep clinging to those old moments when we have better ones in the last 5 years? I mean, the black uniforms have seen more success and been used in bigger games than the Bruce-era jerseys ever were.

Official comes and goes. The 49ers colors were adapted from Clay Stapleton's Cyclone colors, we've read. 49ers, Seminoles, I'd love to have those colors. Just a comment, nothing worth going to war over. (Or, is it ;-)

I think as @CYCLNST8 posted above, it's possible to tweak the uniform colors to be more consistent, while still maintaining the general look of it. (Rhoads-era uni was an attempt to borrow from that period, but strayed too far from it).

As for Peach/CyHawk, I get what you're saying, it does have those downsides, but I think fans are associating the uniform with success of the late Bruce era more so than specific games (The "Beat Iowa" aspect aside, of course).
