Duh!
I don’t know a single person above the age of 22 that wants to go to Welch ave after a game. I would love a bar and dining space that is walking distance from the stadium that isn’t cramped and loud like the Welch spots.

I’m pumped for CyTown. I’d definitely go even in the off-season plus hopefully they have a sports bar to watch NFL games and Hockey.
I usually fire our tailgate back up after game and let it clear out. Much easier to walk over to CyTown for a drink and dinner.

I believe so. Part of the Iowa State Center plans included a hotel, if I remember right. Having actual restaurants within walking distance would probably also help out at least a bit with drawing some of those sorts of conferences.
Thought the plan for Hotel was in the courtyard with Hilton Scheman and CY on the sides, not the pollard and light, but they certainly within walking.

Here's my opinion: It COULD work. But as it is right now, we have a town that has 4-5 real commercial areas scattered around town. You're not going to draw people there just by having a few different restaurants or bars than what is on Duff or Main St. Obviously the first step was to clear out the RVs and build the bridge and they successfully did that. The next step is building a hotel and expanding Scheman so that they can host conferences. Then you have a captive audience more than the 25 days a year where there is FB/MBB games. It would also help if they renovated Hilton and Stephens so they could host more concerts/events. Once you have those things in place, maybe you have something going on there 100 days a year instead of 25 and then you have something.
One of the age old problems utilizing Athletic Facilities for conferences, meetings etc. is these Organizations plan things 5 years + out. Conference schedule comes out and they (meeting peeps) get bumped, and then they have to find new place and often end up saying not worth the hassle, we will go somewhere else from how on.

True, but that's just Hilton. Scheman is a different matter if they actually expand it.

It was a few yrs back but the Library and Pizza Pit were ok for a afternoon for a older alumni. The Library was a different name but still the same place.

Too bad there isn't any space for a multi-sport (baseball/softball/soccer) complex near by as those tournaments bring in people from all over and would love to have a place like Cytown to hangout in between games.

True, but organizations like Trade Shows ($$$$) which even for a medium event would require a large ball room/exhibition hall probably the size of Hilton's floor. Trade shows provide income without saddling their membership with providing it, they rely on income for cost/profit to industry purveyors who exhibit product to their members.

I would like think in the initial plan or down the line the Schemann building would be replaced or remodeled to be an exhibit hall connected to a hotel with CY and Hilton to each side.

Combined with Hilton that would be a large exhibit space.

It seems like that need is being addressed by DSM metro with sport complexes in WDM, Grimes and Johnston.

Welch Ave Station. Doesn’t look much different than The Library in 1982. Was there before one of my sons’ graduation. Naz gave him a hard time for stinking at some video game.:D

Yes, which is why I’ve mentioned in this thread a need for Scheman renovation. They need “flat space” to hold conventions and the only place now is the Hilton floor.

Having a second thought may be that the OUT buyout negotiations made the negotiations too complicated. The Big 12 has very little incentive to let them off the hook and leave money on the table. Some of the Texas schools may even feel a need for additional retribution because of their rivalry. We may just be entering a holding pattern until Texas and OU put up and shut up.
While I would like the Four Corners schools to come to the Big Xii, Utah losing @ Florida, Colorado losing to TCU, Arizona losing to Miss. State and Ariz. State losing @ Okla. State in their OOC games was a Big Ugly for those four schools resume (very short sighted one game scenario village). :)

On the one hand ISU wishes to play schools that are competitive and we can defeat, on the other hand we wish for teams that can win and represent the conference well. Probably the only important thing in the end is how much money a school brings to a media deal, and will they be good conference partners. Don’t wish for another team with entitlement issues.

A couple things going against Hilton is the price acts have to pay and the relative lack of crowds for some past shows. Central Iowa is often seen as a black-hole for a lot of concerts, not because of population, but because of costs to have mid-range acts and lack of mid-size venues.

The largest range of acts look for a 2-4K seat venue and there just aren’t many around here compared to places like even Omaha. That’s exactly why Live Nations is building the $100 million, 3K seat, dedicated venue and entertainment district in Waukee. The number of concerts they’re projecting there is huge and they’re the size of bands that rarely play in Wells because they only fill the bowl or Hilton because of price. That will be huge for concert-goers, but again takes away a possible revenue stream for Hilton.

From everything I’ve heard over the past 15 years, Hilton and the larger Iowa State Center hasn’t been marketed, priced, or maintained in a way that has attracted much. Even when the AD took over, it’s been largely the same. There are longer-term plans to change that, but it’s going to be costly and take a lot of time to get them to be relevant again.

CY is that size, and could do that, except for what you mentioned, it hasn't been maintained to be able to do it. Concerts have really changed in the last 20 years. You don't hear of many 12-15k concerts anymore. Yes, there are some, but not the norm. I was thinking Wells is 40,000-80,000 a day to rent. It's been many years since I heard the exact number.
