There's nothing dumb about defending your kicker from egregious behavior of a select few, if he did in fact get the targeted type of harassment someone else described earlier in the thread.

But Campbell said "our fan base," not "a segment of the fan base" or "a small number of fans." I hope it's just a poor word choice. But regardless, it's not even just about being sensitive, it's that it's a deflection from the real problem at hand.

Would love for CMC to sit back and think what the fanbase at Ohio State or Michigan would be doing if a kicker missed 3 field goals in a game like that KU game. And then followed it up with a game like this only allowing 10pts and losing. Oooooof. Hope he realizes he has it pretty good here
That's why I say ISU is possibly the best P5 football coaching position.

The fans are great by comparison, and the media heat is probably the lowest anywhere.

Great facilities, cool and unique stadium and gameday experience, and gorgeous campus.

Good morning folks! Just wanted to say this morning that I've calmed down a bit from last night, and I'm not drunk anymore (which helps).... and so I wanted to retract a few things I may have said that I didn't really mean.

I don't want CMC gone, but I'm not sure that I ever said I did last night anyway.... and I also realize that nothing is going to happen to Manning mid season either and it doesn't make sense to fire him mid season.

With that being said.... I do think what CMC said was stupid, but he was ticked off too, and if he could take it back I'd bet he would say that 'some of' fanbase fried our kicker instead of the entire fanbase. I'll give him that. But it's never a good idea to mess with your fanbase coach.... that's going to get you nowhere.

As for Manning... if things don't improve offensively the rest of this season, I don't think CMC is going to have a choice but make a change... and that should include Jeff Myers on the OL too IMO if things don't improve.

I'm just really tired and exhausted with watching our offense become so boring and non creative in any way. No misdirection, no jet sweeps, have no idea how to run a screen, no downfield throws at all, etc, etc. Downfield throws have almost no risk. Usually will either go incomplete, caught, or get PI.... rarely intercepted. And it loosens up the defense a bunch. We are so flippin' conservative it isn't funny. Iowa is a LOT more creative compared to us.... that's saying something.

Look at you being all reasonable! ;)

I completely agree that changes will have to be made on offense if things don't change pretty dramatically in the next 6 games. And, until last night, I wasn't there.

Can we have our lineman widen their splits?

And can we actually try a jet sweep like twice a game?

Or run the option pitch?

Or do play-action passing from under center?

Quick, somebody tell CMC and Manning about this team called the Kansas City Chiefs.

Maybe watch them and get some hints on what to do against deep safety looks.

What a bunch of rationalizations by a lot of posts here. Good for Coach to call out fans that beat up a freshman kicker. It was absurd what fans said and did.

Also, Coach said the lack of offense is on him. He sits in on all meetings their lack of production is on him - don't blame anyone else. Do some of you not read or listen to the post game?

People are calling for CMC to blame players and coaches. He won’t and shouldn’t. It will lose any chance of improvement if he does. I hope he is addressing those issues with the individual appropriately, but pointing fingers in public is wrong and something he won’t do. Firing an assistant now won’t help most likely.

Say he lets Manning go and Scheelhaase steps in. The first game some wrinkles are thrown in, and the team looks rejuvenated which is great.

Give it a week or two later when the same players are being scouted and things bog down again.

Again I have my own issues with ISU's approach but that included having good players. With the Oline being so bad there's not a lot that can be done.

I'll continue to argue all week that the emotions of the quote are probably good for us. Campbell's pissed. He's smart enough to know that he's not really pissed at the fans. But he just grabbed the first thing to be pissed about and said something stupid.

These are my favorite takes like the personnel available doesn't effect how this goes.

Remember how good Tom Herman looked at Ohio State?

And any of the concepts you're calling for require a run game that the defense has to commit to.

We don't know what was said or did though do we? I'm sure there were some dipshits out there but the fans at the stadium gave him a hell of an ovation last night.

CMC is a "coach speak" type of guy. He's a great leader of young men and loyal to his coaches. Maybe almost to a fault.

Klieman let Messingham go last year before their bowl game IIRC, and I think he's a similar type of guy as CMC. Some times changes are needed.

Just be more like one of the best offenses in professional football. Why didn't they think of that? Why doesn't every team do that?

Do you think ISU has the Oline to run these concepts? Or speed out of the receivers?

Guys, if you didn't trash our kicker after the last game, he's not talking about you. I get the feeling that the comment is hitting a little close to home for some.
I think that’s the problem. Even with all the dip ***** on here, there was really nothing that would be considered “frying” him. Don’t make a statement that makes it sound like any real portion of the fanbase had the pitchforks out.

Agreed.

Perhaps the underlying theme is not Matt's statement about the kicker and the fans, but his lack of a statement that the Offensive coaching and the offensive side of the team needs to improve.

Couple the two and maybe you have a bit of a situation.
But how many wouldn’t have even noticed if Travis Hines hadn’t latched on to this one line and told them (you) to be offended?

Be offended or concerned if you want I guess. I’m annoyed by the lack of offense but ignoring this quote.

I'm not going to tell others how they should interpret Campbell's statement. In my mind, its understood he's talking about members of Iowa State's fanbase not the fanbase as a whole.
I agree with this.

This thread needs shut down, total non-issue as far as I'm concerned. You guys finally got something that's not coach-speak from him that you've been clamoring for years and now everyone is upset.

Let's revisit preseason expectations, pretty much everybody on here thought 6-6 or 7-5, now we are right on track for that and its a nuclear meltdown mode.

I'm not going to pretend like there aren't offensive issues but we didn't have trouble scoring or moving the ball on Iowa or Baylor and Iowa's defense is better than anything in the Big 12. We should have putup 21-27 range on them if not for all the dumb mistakes.

I thought last night we were actually moving the ball well against a good defense but they kept stalling out once they got close to the red zone.

If you guys think our offense sucks so bad or Manning is the worst Division 1 coordinator go watch Iowa and Brian Ferentz, their offense is on a completely different level of ineptitude .
Shut down because people are saying things you don’t agree with…dude, seriously, get a grip.

We are hardly on track for 7 wins- if you think we are, please tell us where those 4 wins are going to come from out of our 6 remaining games? Really- you think we’re going to win 4 out of our last 6? I think maybe you’re the one having the meltdown with reality. We might beat Tech and WVU at home…those are big mights. Then again, I thought those would be easy wins last year too. There’s a real possibility we only win one, maybe two more games this year. We’re right on track for a 4/5 win season, which would be the second year in a row we fall well short of expectations.

Then you want us to be happy that our offense isn’t as bad as Iowa’s- possibly the worst possible offense in the country? Since when do winners take pleasure in not being as bad as the biggest loser? This would be like a hot dog vendor who sells 4” hot dogs bragging that he’s better than the guy down the street who sells the 3” hot dogs. Football is a game of inches (so we’ve been told) and last night and the week before, we brought the 4 incher thinking that it was enough. Jereseib- stop trying to convince yourself that 4 inches is enough, it isn’t.

Never said things shouldn't change or the fans didn't respond positively last night.

We had a lot of people that were complete idiots last week. Good for Coach to call them out.

As I have stated elsewhere, Coach said the lack of offense is on him. He said he is in the meetings that sets the strategy.
