Against KU there were a few plays in which holes were there but missed by the RB. Brock finds those holes and that would’ve likely been enough to make the difference. Against KSU we just need to get in to FG range at the end. I think a healthy Brock finds a way to get some extra yards like he did in Kinnick to get us there. So I don’t think 5-1 with a healthy Brock requires a huge mental leap. No, even before Brock went down we were last in rushing. He has nowhere to run. There are a lot of stats in a lot of threads why that wouldn't have been the case. Watch the Texas Homer video for a great run down of our o-line and passing issues that contribute to our dismal running game.
There are many reasons to be on any side of the various hypotheticals, but I think when you look at data, stats, metrics, etc they tell a pretty compelling story.
Bruce had three 8-win seasons in a row and never had a building year once he got the program established. That was the old Big 8 which was no joke and there were only 15 total bowl games prior to 1980 compared to 40 bowl games in the Campbell era.Mediocrity. Achieved it under Earle Bruce. 30 years in the Wilderness and we finally get the best coach in Iowa State history. And you complain and think you know better. Team is young. They’ll improve. Hunter gets better or he will have competition coming in JJ. Trust Campbell. He will get things fixed.
Not much diff between old coaches and new, cept easier to get to bowls and maybe $4 mil bucks.Old or new, we are all fans. And most fans do not enjoy losing.
Good post. Stand up for you.
Also, post more often! It's good for all of us and good for the site!

If you are saying Earle Bruce achieved mediocrity how exactly are you claiming Matt Campbell eclipsed that?
I'd put their performance pretty close as the coach of Iowa State. Campbell built a good program faster and Bruce sustained consistent success when his program was established.
One could argue that Campbell eclipsed Bruce with the 2020 season but the performance of the surrounding seasons does not support that consistency.
Finally, here are some coaches who were brought on by Bruce during his career, perhaps you have heard of them: Dom Capers, Pete Carroll, Glen Mason, Nick Saban and Jim Tressel.
Matt Campbell can be the best coach ever at Iowa State. I believe he still has to earn that as at best he has only matched Earle Bruce. It is all subjective and jut my opinion but if Iowa State kept Earle Bruce during the 1980s think how different everything would be.

Love Earle Bruce. He had a culture at Iowa State. Lots of Ohio players. Good times. Earle left and it fell apart. Damn Woody Hayes.
Not wishing anything other than just our team being the best version of themselves they can be!If this is “the beginning of the end” then you guys are gonna wish it so.
People are telling us to stop noticing things. Inconvenient things. We have over 700 posts in this thread alone. Aren't we discussing it? I'm confused.
You prefer losing by double digits almost every game and not being competitive as better than Campbell? Disagree. Completely
I think most people here are willing to cut Matt plenty slack. Including me. He deserves it.I've seen a few player's parents tweet out how they liked Campbell's quote as he was sticking up for his guys. Matt also isn't the type of guy that's going to apologize for doing that, even if it was in a situation where it wasn't warranted. I think "this is the beginning of the end" is a little bit over the top though. For crying out loud, this is the first time since Matt's been here where the fanbase has been this frustrated with a team of his. I'm going to cut him some slack on this one.
My first reaction to this was, Yes, he can lose his team, and his fans. I don't think he will. But you're right. He needs to be more diplomatic; and he is usually very much so.I give him a pass because it's the first adversity he's really ever had to face here. However, fan bases are very sensitive - our's probably as much as any because we want so desperately to have nice things for once. A coach can't lose his team and he can't lose his fans so he'll need to find more diplomatic ways in the future.
That's the kind of identity you need like an ingrown toenail, a painful one.I agree. They need to get through this weekend and then do a total revamp of the offense during the bye like they did a few years ago on defense. Figure out what they're good at and lean into it.
When they had Soehner, Allen, Kolar, the offense wasn't super explosive, but at least it had an identity. I have no idea what the identity is right now other than the OL getting blown up and not being able to run the ball.
I don't think we are talking much about his comment anymore. We are still talking about the elephant in the room, the offense. Are we still talking about this?
No. I'm just saying that if we're going to lose every conference game, it's at least more entertaining if we actually score points. Maybe we turn things around and pick up a few wins at some point. But right now, we are by far the worst team in the conference. As good as the defense is, this offense is not going to win us any games. We are nearing iowa levels of offensive futility without the good special teams or defensive TDs. That's not a good combo.
Oh our offense is horrible. I’m not arguing that. I was just calling out some of the hyperbole that was being thrown around here about how inexcusable it is in year 7 and essentially placing an expiration date on Campbell here.I think most people here are willing to cut Matt plenty slack. Including me. He deserves it.
On the other hand, this is a discussion board, and we are discussing the woeful ineptitude of our offense. I don't think I'll have to eat any crow if our offense turns around soon, and I am hoping it does. We all want that.
If Matt can't handle a little criticism, his skin is too soft. His skin is not too soft, btw. He can handle it. He doesn't even listen to what's said here, so I'm not too concerned.

Defense is better because our offense is poor. No team is going to put their best offense on show, (and risk we MIGHT gain an ounce of momentum) when the know we cannot score.Defense so far is improved from last year.
We'll see what happens with injuries over time.
Just because we're close doesn't make it ok. 5-15 against +/- 3 point spread is a really bad stat. If we just did this or that... Ya that's coaching people. It needs to get better.
