Not to compare the two too much, but Nick Saban faced the same issues at Michigan State, LSU and Alabama. He finally gave in and hired some guys with sophisticated passing minds including Lane Kiffin, who took it to a new level. Now, he has regressed again with Bill O'Brien, who I think is a good coach, but not dynamic like Kiffin was.Anybody in the program will tell you CMC is very integral in the Offense and Manning plays the exact schemes that he wants. That's why it hasn't changed or evolved in years.
Now, CMC needs to be here for the long-term, but HE has to evolve offensively or just changing the guy wearing the coordinator headset isn't going to matter.
Point is that Nick was willing to move from being a ball control coach with Mark Ingram at RB and a Manager QB like McElroy (which was his style for the first 3/4 of his career) to recruting guys like Tua and Young with multiple great WRs (instead of just one - Julio Jones in the early days), and he became even more dynamic.
Campbell simply needs to be willing to adapt (some) and change and let go of some of his control offensively, as it is not 1992 anymore. Love Campbell, but he needs to adapt to become the best version of himself. Go get a hot shot Offensive Coaordinator and play that portal a bit. He can get new guys and still have them fit in his culture.
