Reversals are not covered on insurance FYI. Wasn’t actually too expensive to be honest.

Get one or don't
Another disclaimer to remember, everyone's experience is different in terms of recovery. I heard all the stories of getting it done on a Friday, throwing a bag of frozen peas on, and back to 100% by Monday. That was not my experience. I was in my mid-40s, not sure if that made a difference vs. getting it done in my 30s, but it took me a full week before I felt mostly back to normal, I then went out and shoveled the driveway, and that laid me up for another 3-4 days.

What is the price of this these days? When I got mine at Iowa Clinic Urology was about $1,000 straight cash and $1,200 if they billed it through insurance with confirmation specimen examination after the time/evacuations they stated.

The final "straw" that got me decide to do it was employer's insurance was dropping coverage for the procedure and other similar "family planning medical services" (cira 2011) so the procedure would of been all at personal expense after the new year.

Should be a no brainer, but nurse and doctor would appreciate if you showered before coming in for the procedure.

Not exactly sure.
Ok now you sound like a patient. You said they were separated not that the guy was pissed at his wife and decided to get a vasectomy. If a patient comes into an office and says they have no interest in having children and wants a vasectomy they will be told the risks (very minor) asked if they are 100% sure if they don’t want children again and then scheduled. I’m guessing that’s what your friend said. If he went into an office and said he was pissed at his wife and wants to get snipped no Dr should preform that procedure.
I called to a urologist about a V once to just get info. He told me that he would not perform one unless my wife was along for the office visit because it should be a couples decision and not a rash decision. I was in my early 40s. One of the guys I previously mentioned was later 20s, maybe mid 20s.

There are definitely some doctors who will not do much due diligence when a patience brings up an elective surgery. I had a situation with one of our kids that showed me how much the surgical machine is out for money. In the end the $6000 surgery was $700 by doing an option that the doctors had never mentioned until I questioned harder.

Yep you want to avoid those docs. The first part about having the spouse there/informed is usually how most of those conversations go. Without knowing more about the surgical procedure I can’t really weigh in.

Ear tubes are the racket. They told me my 8 year old needed them, he’s now 22, and the cost would be 6k. We had a rider for tubes at the time. I mentioned it and they told me that in 4 weeks their new outpatient place would open and cut it to 4800. I said I needed to go home and talk to my wife. Figured we would go with the 6k since they said he needed them soon. I asked if those were our only options and was told yes.

When I got home an hour later, there was a message on our answering machine saying that he thought I was hesitant about my son getting them (I wasn’t, just wanted to get my wife’s schedule and line things up and call tomorrow ), so he would be willing to do them in his office and would use a local, and both my wife and I could be there with him. Said the total cost would be $700. He had done it before and been fine.

I called back and about 2 days later we were in his office and he got tubes while looking at both of his parents. Would be extremely cheap to give that option to everyone instead of stroking them for 6k or 4800 and saying those are the only options.

Define "not too expensive." I think mine was like $5000 about 6 or 7 years ago. So not expensive by surgery standards, but not pocket change either. And like you said insurance doesn't cover a cent.

And the surgery is 3-4 hours, you're awake the whole time so it's outpatient, recovery is worse, and it's not 100% effective (mine was not).

If a couple is sure they don't want any more kids, vasectomy is the best way to go about it IMO. But it's also a terrible idea for "temporary" or "I'm mad at my wife" contraception.

What morale hazard?
It’s not in a Urologist’s best interest to talk you out of one. I mean… you’re right. And, at least around here, most of them are so busy that it’s not going to make a difference to them if someone backs out. But if you have questions, are comfortable with your primary care doc, and don’t want to ask the stranger that’s about to take a scalpel to your junk, a wellness visit is a good time to ask.

I'm actually kind of shocked that this is even a thing. Guys seriously do this?

You make some valid points. We’re probably using a bad example by having this talk around such a minor procedure like a vasectomy. If it’s something like a knee replacement or invasive surgery I would be more in your camp. The simple fact is that if you are a male that doesn’t want kids a vasectomy is the only real option so it’s more of do you really want it or not then weighing pros and cons.

My man people do the weirdest **** with their bodies. I have pulled random objects out of every orifice imaginable, seen the most bizarre forms of home remedies, even seen people take strangers meds just because. A lot of people just don’t understand how medicine works because most of their interaction is through tv shows or sensational online stories.

I don't doubt it. Just weird to me because it seems there's a difference between someone huffing paint and deciding to shove a Happy Meal toy up their butt and a guy scheduling a vasectomy weeks out, getting logistics figured out, and then going through with it with a urologist taking a scalpel to their balls... just because they're mad and want to get back at their wife. Lol.

And most of those x-rays, CT or MRI scans hanging in the background are hung incorrectly, don't show the correct anatomy or are of a male when when it's a female patient in the show. And doctors (especially in large hospitals) aren't the ones actually doing the CT or MRI scans.

I knocked down some of the hair in the nether region beforehand to aid in the process. I gotta say, the part where they took a bic razor and cleaned up the rest is possibly the most terrifying moments of my life.

Had the procedure done on a Thursday. Still had some achy-ness through at least monday/tuesaday. Had a couple things come up that weekend which made me more active than I wanted to be which may have played a role in that. Places like amazon sell vas-undies with like a pouch to put an ice pack in. Get a couple pairs of those.

Someone has watched scrubs lol. Although oddly scrubs is probably the most accurate of all the medical shows out there.

Don't over think this, sit down with your wife and decide if you are done having any more children. If there is any doubt, do not do it. If you are like us, then start asking around. Do a google search for the best in your area, lots of info. around.

After you have found the doctor, both you and your wife will have to go in and meet with them, they will run you through the whole process, again asking "are you sure you are finished having children?"

If the answer is "yes", set it up for a Friday, take the following Monday off, do it when you have a free weekend. Go down to Duluth and get a few pairs of the underwear with the pocket, you will thank me later, get them a size larger than you generally wear. The whole procedure takes about 45 minutes or so, be sure and have someone to drive you home. Get a couple bags of frozen peas, switch out when needed, you are going to need them.

If you have any swelling after a few days, go back to the doctor, be sure and go in for a sample check after the 5- or 6-week check.

Believe me, you will not regret doing it, once it's all over and healed up.
