Another disclaimer to remember, everyone's experience is different in terms of recovery. I heard all the stories of getting it done on a Friday, throwing a bag of frozen peas on, and back to 100% by Monday. That was not my experience. I was in my mid-40s, not sure if that made a difference vs. getting it done in my 30s, but it took me a full week before I felt mostly back to normal, I then went out and shoveled the driveway, and that laid me up for another 3-4 days.Get one or don't
I called to a urologist about a V once to just get info. He told me that he would not perform one unless my wife was along for the office visit because it should be a couples decision and not a rash decision. I was in my early 40s. One of the guys I previously mentioned was later 20s, maybe mid 20s.Ok now you sound like a patient. You said they were separated not that the guy was pissed at his wife and decided to get a vasectomy. If a patient comes into an office and says they have no interest in having children and wants a vasectomy they will be told the risks (very minor) asked if they are 100% sure if they don’t want children again and then scheduled. I’m guessing that’s what your friend said. If he went into an office and said he was pissed at his wife and wants to get snipped no Dr should preform that procedure.
Yep you want to avoid those docs. The first part about having the spouse there/informed is usually how most of those conversations go. Without knowing more about the surgical procedure I can’t really weigh in.I called to a urologist about a V once to just get info. There are definitely some doctors who will not do much due diligence when a patience brings up an elective surgery. I had a situation with one of our kids that showed me how much the surgical machine is out for money. In the end the $6000 surgery was $700 by doing an option that the doctors had never mentioned until I questioned harder.
Ear tubes are the racket. They told me my 8 year old needed them, he’s now 22, and the cost would be 6k. We had a rider for tubes at the time. I mentioned it and they told me that in 4 weeks their new outpatient place would open and cut it to 4800. I said I needed to go home and talk to my wife. Figured we would go with the 6k since they said he needed them soon. I asked if those were our only options and was told yes.Yep you want to avoid those docs. Define "not too expensive." I think mine was like $5000 about 6 or 7 years ago. So not expensive by surgery standards, but not pocket change either. And like you said insurance doesn't cover a cent.Reversals are not covered on insurance FYI. Wasn’t actually too expensive to be honest.
It’s not in a Urologist’s best interest to talk you out of one. I mean… you’re right. And, at least around here, most of them are so busy that it’s not going to make a difference to them if someone backs out. But if you have questions, are comfortable with your primary care doc, and don’t want to ask the stranger that’s about to take a scalpel to your junk, a wellness visit is a good time to ask. What morale hazard?
I'm actually kind of shocked that this is even a thing. Guys seriously do this?Define "not too expensive." I think mine was like $5000 about 6 or 7 years ago. So not expensive by surgery standards, but not pocket change either. And like you said insurance doesn't cover a cent.
And the surgery is 3-4 hours, you're awake the whole time so it's outpatient, recovery is worse, and it's not 100% effective (mine was not).
If a couple is sure they don't want any more kids, vasectomy is the best way to go about it IMO. But it's also a terrible idea for "temporary" or "I'm mad at my wife" contraception.
You make some valid points. We’re probably using a bad example by having this talk around such a minor procedure like a vasectomy. If it’s something like a knee replacement or invasive surgery I would be more in your camp. The simple fact is that if you are a male that doesn’t want kids a vasectomy is the only real option so it’s more of do you really want it or not then weighing pros and cons. It’s not in a Urologist’s best interest to talk you out of one. My man people do the weirdest **** with their bodies. I have pulled random objects out of every orifice imaginable, seen the most bizarre forms of home remedies, even seen people take strangers meds just because. A lot of people just don’t understand how medicine works because most of their interaction is through tv shows or sensational online stories.I'm actually kind of shocked that this is even a thing. Guys seriously do this?
I don't doubt it. Just weird to me because it seems there's a difference between someone huffing paint and deciding to shove a Happy Meal toy up their butt and a guy scheduling a vasectomy weeks out, getting logistics figured out, and then going through with it with a urologist taking a scalpel to their balls... just because they're mad and want to get back at their wife. Lol.My man people do the weirdest **** with their bodies. Someone has watched scrubs lol. Although oddly scrubs is probably the most accurate of all the medical shows out there. And most of those x-rays, CT or MRI scans hanging in the background are hung incorrectly, don't show the correct anatomy or are of a male when when it's a female patient in the show. And doctors (especially in large hospitals) aren't the ones actually doing the CT or MRI scans.
The black kind of avocados.Your balls turned green? That’s weird.
Former radiologic technologist that did x-rays and CT in a small hospital, which means we also worked in surgery, ortho or ER.Someone has watched scrubs lol. Although oddly scrubs is probably the most accurate of all the medical shows out there.
