A big piece of metal fell from the roof onto the court during a game a couple weeks ago.
Wasn't it from the suspended scoreboard and not the actual roof?

Also- as "unique" as that exterior is of the concept Hilton- i would love to see what the inside would have looked like.

this would've been cool had it come to fruition

The Hilton Coliseum Renovation and Additions project will address code compliance and related facility improvements in the existing arena and include fire alarm system upgrades, expansion of the existing concourse, elevator repair/replacements, exterior elevated walkway repairs and seating upgrades to include both suite and club section options. The new basketball/volleyball practice facility addition will provide full size practice courts for both the men’s and women’s varsity basketball programs, the women’s varsity volleyball program and related support spaces.

The project is expected to be constructed in multiple phases and will require coordination with ongoing events at the facility. Henneman Engineering is providing HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection design for this project.

Completion Date
2010

Total Construction Budget
$60,000,000

Yep, this is about all you could do to Hilton and not ruin it.. Expansion of the concourse is planned and likely coming once CyTown is on a solid footing..

Obviously it was from 53 years ago is easy to look back and see what is wrong as hindsight is always 20/20. But nothing says come to Iowa State for Engineering and Architecture like a building that has unending fundamental flaws.

Right smack dab in the middle of the worst era in American design. We lucked out on Hilton. Towers… are/were definitely of their time.
Eh- some Brutalist architecture is pretty cool. Assembly Hall has a unique look especially from the outside.

That original Hilton design though? Bleh.

Can you provide a link to where you found this? Love me some old facilities stuff
Just saw this images that show the original design of what became Hilton Coliseum (and Fisher Threater, too).

Quite a bit different. Construction drawings were completed. Bids were taken but were too high. So the structure was resigned to what we have today. In my opinion, that was a blessing!

Oh yeah, I think you're right, it was the scoreboard.

I know some people would hate it but if we were ever to reno Hilton for suites I think it would be cool to move concessions to the perimeter, then where current concessions are blast thru the wall onto the inner concourse and make those suites. Keep hallways in between the suites to get from outer concourse to stairs to go up or down.

I'm surprised we just keep delaying renovations to Hilton. Seems like there have been different concepts out there for the past 10+ years and nothing ever happens. It's long overdue for a makeover and with the direction of the program headed in the right direction again now is as good as any time to start fast tracking it when it would be easier to get the support needed. The concessions and outer concourse especially has a lot of opportunity to maximize space better and maybe create some space for a few premium options if designed right. Probably due for a new scoreboard and just modernizing some of the "details" aspect of the building in general. The steps leading up to the south entrance are in poor shape and they closed off half of them already this winter. The steps on that side of the building could be a project by itself that could be done ASAP if they wanted.

I love Hilton and don't want to see it drastically changed and at the risk of hitting nerves of some here I feel we should have made renovations to Hilton a higher priority much sooner. I don't agree with making CyTown the higher priority at the moment as it seems like that project may get going and completed sooner then when they may ever get around to the current proposed plans for Hilton renovations.

Hilton was put on the back burner due to conference realignment and the subsequent volatility of TV revenue.. Now that Yormark has solidified that, we will see Hilton changes in the next decade..

It's not priority one like CyTown as the cost benefit isn't nearly as high

Just saw that the Regents approved $10M improvements to Scheman. Maybe Hilton is next!
