Iowa will play every other B1G team at least twice (1 home, 1 away) every four years. Sure tOSU will play Michigan every year, but you don't know that Iowa will play tOSU, Michigan, USC, etc., "less frequently than every other B1G team."

This is reason why I think more protected rivals is good. In the case of Iowa, it is great for their fans to be able to road trip to Lincoln, Twin Cities and Madtown. Not sure why Penn State didn't take a similar approach with Rutgers and Maryland for their fans. Maybe they did, but MD/RU didn't want to play.
IMO ISU should play KSU, KU and OSU every year. If CU comes back, would love to play them as well, but could see where games against other Pac or Texas teams might be their preference.
It's simple math. 3 of Iowa's games are locked in as Neb, Minn, and Wisc. So they have 6 slots left for everybody else. The rest of the league has fewer games locked in; some have 2, some have 1, and Penn State has 0. So they have 7, 8, or 9 rotation slots to fill. More slots = more chances to play the non-locked-in teams.
That still doesn't guarantee a team with 2 locked in rivals will play tOSU, Mich, USC, PSU, more frequently. That extra slot could just as easily be filled by Rutgers, Maryland, Indiana, etc. Either way, Iowa will be playing all of tOSU, Michigan, USC, PSU two seasons out of every four at the very least.
Yeah, they'll play 50% of the time which is a lot better than current. But Penn State will play them 60% of the time.

You don't know that. PSU might play Rutgers 60% of the time for all we know.
And Iowa might play Northwestern six time a year. But we know Iowa has 6 slots for 12 teams and PSU has 9 slots for 15 teams.
Agree, that's what we know. What we don't know is who will fill those slots, so saying Iowa will play the conference powers less frequently than those with 2, 1 or 0 protected rivalries isn't accurate. And IMO Luke Fickell is going to take Wisco to that conference power level, if that happens that's a very tough game on Iowa's schedule every season.
Yeah the odds say they could play those power programs more frequently, I never said they didn't. You said Iowa will play tOSU, Mich, USC, (and I presume you meant PSU as well) less frequently, and that's simply not known. Those extra non-rivalry slots for other teams that could fill with tOSU, Mich, USC, PSU could just as easily fill with Rutgers, Maryland, Indiana. Just facts.
Farmaggedon is like the 5th most played game consecutively in CFB history. So yea, it needs to be protect. KU too
I have looked at several articles discussing this scheduling, none of them mentioned that protected rivalries had to be agreed to by both teams. It might be true, but I can't find it documented anywhere. Not sure the B1G wanted everyone to know how the sausage was made.

Good point about Farmaggedon. It makes sense based on the consecutive streak of games played and the similarities of institutions. I just haven't perceived the same kind of rivalry energy that we have with (Eastern) Iowa. If we ever lose the CyHawk games, then maybe the public perception of Farmaggedon would ratchet up over the years to take its place.
