cyclone alley exists mainly because studets were being jackasses and season ticket holders didnt want to sit next to them so they put the students in the endzones to try to please both the students and seasn ticket holders. If students nowadays weren't such knuckleheads and cheered in a respectable manner things might get back to the way it used to be. but instead we as student decide to change traditions dating back to the father of hilton magic and can't go to a game to cheer on our team we instead have to find ways to cheer against our opponets and make ourselves look like squaks(not syaing we are as bad as them but that trend is starting)

Personally, as a student, I cheer from any where in Hilton. I don't pay for CA because I don't need to pay extra money to think I need an excuse to cheer loud and get into the game.

CA is nice, but a lottery would be a much more efficient way of distributing tickets. For CA, the same people show up as early as possible to get those front row seats and I can't speak for them, but I am sure they feel self-entitled to them. Some people have class and can't go over to Hilton at 5 pm to get into a game.

My 2 cents.

I don't really remember it being that way, or see it that way today.

There was a fair bit of lobbying when I was in school in the early 90's for a student section. But as it goes, student wanted great seating and not pay for it - understandable given college finances.

Then of course we hit our first conf championship of any kind in about a thousand years, and some good NCAA teams under Floyd and Eustachy, and the big donors wanted more and better seats, displacing the students. I think CA ended up being a decent compromise for both parties - for better or for worse.

I might be right of wrong on that reasoning - but I really don't think CA was any type of "punishment". However I don't see things reverting back. When you fork over $2500 got get your seats, you won't readily give them up for students paying a hundred or so. The only real change I can see is students losing seats and only because of lackluster attendance. JP will do the math and see that he can make a $100 or so for an empty seat, or $1000 or so for an empty seat. The $$$'s prevail and that would be unfortunate. I like CA. I haven't been close enough to be a good judge, but I think they're well behaved, at least as well as students were when I was one. They're far more organzed and can be a great benefit to the atmosphere. I just wish there were more of them game in and game out.

Out of curiosity, what is a student season basketball ticket go for nowadays?

Wow, I remember paying 85 for a all sports pass. Anyway enjoy that now, those seats would cost me probably $3000 for 2.

So after all this conversation about students and seating, what were the things you would eliminate? I think posts til chaos was like 5 on this one. I would eliminate seats period. Stand or bring some lawn chairs, huh? Here a topic, talk amongst yourselves...Ricardo Pattons last trip to Hilton after 11 seasons

Here's the difference between then and now--this. This medium, this form of communication, this outlet to b!tch!

Wow... I've been trying to think of a way to say this for a long time... and you hit it on the Nail! Thank you! I love having a forum for us to come together and discuss Iowa State Athletics... but I hate it when people use it to complain and blame others. Everybody needs to be responsible for themselves...

Some people want to compare the students of today to those of when they were in school... honestly... I think that the mentality of the students is the same as it has always been. The same number attend, the same number prioritize and might skip a game for a class project. The difference... today... you can identify "Cyclone Alley" as those with the red t-shirts... where as before... you didn't know who the students were and probably assumed every young looking person was a student and thought there was better student attendance. The location of the students is different now than it was... so you can't compare and think things are different than when you went to school here.

Lastly... maybe if CycloneFanatic existed when you were a student... you'd be hearing how you weren't loud or good enough at the time.

You are wrong in more ways than you know. Bruce Van De Velde moved the student section from the 2 lower sections directly behind the visitors bench (and balcony sections) to behind the baskets. After a year or two of those seats, then Cyclone Alley was formed.

Absolutely! But, as Angie said...our idea of fun may be different than others! :wink0st:

If you want a testimonial, ask jparker22. He and his friends sit by us!

wow joepublic, you have the worst idea i've ever heard! you really think moving the students to the balcony would IMPROVE Hilton?!?! Let's think about that one.
It is very possible that the balcony seating which are now not being used by the students, will be sold to $99 ticketholders next yr. Pollard said at one lunch that the students were good but not enough. Said over 300 season student tickets had been paid for but not picked up(Balcony seats) and the $99 seats were full. Said he would rather sell them at $99 instead of $150 to students, and have them full....he wanted bodies in the seats. Look for student section to only be in the lower level and all balcony seats behind the baskets to be discounted season tickets like this yrs $99 tickets.

Again, this thread was MEANT to be fun.....I had no intentions of bashing or arguing about Cyclone Alley. I am a member of Cyclone Alley and do my best to cheer and help the team win. Lets concentrate on showing up Wednesday with the idea of losing our voices screaming the clones on to victory!

I like this idea. For some reason, I thought the student section was basically only the lower levels anyway. I haven't seen anybody up in the balcony besides the Kansas game. If CA and the studets are in the bottom on both "endzones" I see no problem with this happening.

I would be willing to bet that most of the tickets not picked up were purchased as part of the all sports package. If the process is still the same, you need to sign up for the all sports package the summer before. There could be many reasons as to why: student transfers, dropouts, etc., along with students just losing interest. It was very easy to add the all sports package to your UBill and many of my friends just never got around to picking up their basketball tickets, lost interest, or just had too much going on.

And student basketball season tickets are not $150, they were around $60-70 a couple years ago and I can't imagine they have surpassed the regular ticket prices. So, it would make sense for Jamie to sell unused seats and make more money.

The $150 price is just a quote from Pollard, I don't know what students pay for tickets, but he was a little upset that students were not showing up. This was in context to a question about: WAS HE GOING TO CREATE A CYCLONE ALLEY FOR WOMEN'S GAMES. He replied prob not as if the students wouldn't fill the arena for the KANSAS men's game, why would anyone expect them to fill for a women's game. Went on to point out over 300 men's game tickets not picked up but MOMMY & DADDY paid for them(his words), so go figure. The rest was him saying possibly selling to $99 ticket fans as they were full house for the KANSAS game...they show up. his words, not mine, meaning less money but bodies in the seats, yelling and rooting for the Cyclones.

That's hilarious, :laugh8kb: because I think we'd all be surprised if a student bought the tickets themselves and never picked them up. I know I'd be hard-pressed to find a student who bought $100 worth of MBB tickets (that's what mine cost this winter in the MBB, FB and Cy's Pass combo. $90 for FB and $99 or $100 for MBB) and just said "screw it" and never picked them up. Heck, one month's rent is half paid for with the money I spent on MBB tickets...

I knew at least 5 ppl my senior year that didn't. It is happening and if you don't think so you need to revaluate.

We hang out with a different crowd then. I said that I would be hard-pressed, but my friends and I all grew up working physical labor since we were 10. We've always had to work hard to get what we earned. Some people haven't had to or don't have to work for money, and I think that it's sad.

It has nothing to do with the crowd I hang with. Who's to say that I haven't or my friends haven't worked hard to get where they are? There are many circumstances that contribute to not using a basketball ticket, and not laboring at 10 years old is probably at the bottom of the list.
