Gotta love the replies. "Those refs better call that in every other game this season, then"

Or what? It's over. You lost. The refs have a credible explanation for what they did. Nothing's going to happen. No apology. No redo. No overturning.

But they waved to the children so it's all good
End of first quarter:

Sick child: “Look daddy! They are waving to us!! The whole stadium is waving to us! Even all the players! This is amazing!!”

Dad: “yes sweetheart. They all wish you the best and hope you can get home soon”

Near the end of the game:
Sick child: “Daddy… why are all those nice people who were waving to us now throwing things on the field? I thought they were friendly, but they sure don’t look friendly anymore”

Dad: “well, sweetheart. That’s how that fan base normally behaves. They have a reputation of being rude and abusive, especially when they are losing.”

Sick child: “So why did they wave to us earlier?”

Dad: “well, they think if people associate the wave to Iowa fans, maybe people would forget how terrible their fan base acts.”

Sick child: “I don’t feel good anymore”

Tech looks bad. Their QB (I think he's 3rd string) is just throwing picks all over the place

The Des
I can be the Hawk hate voice all around, I hate when people say this. Yeah, if you played better the game wouldn't have come down to the end. Every team in every close game ever can say that. But it did come down to that and doing enough to win is doing enough to win no matter what the margin is.

But I love that even a god awful offense would have been enough to win that game and they still came up short.
The difference is that iowa still had an amazing chance to win this game after the correct call. They needed maybe 10 yards to get into FG range for their 89th consecutive AA kicker.

Why are they blaming the refs that actually got it right for once? Where’s the outrage at all the other ref crews out there that don’t enforce it

I'm not misunderstanding the call, it was probably the right one. I'm responding to posters on here who seem to think his intent was to call a fair catch or deceive the other team.

I don't think that was his intent at all, in this case it doesn't matter either way though on his intent.

I'm sorry your team lost.

Correct. Very black and white rule. Intent has no bearing.

I haven't looked back through every one of the pages since the Iowa game ended, so maybe the rule has been posted already. But if not, here it is:
(pages 34-35 here)
Fair Catch
ARTICLE 1.
a. A fair catch of a scrimmage kick is a catch beyond the neutral zone by a Team B player who has made a valid signal during a scrimmage kick that is untouched beyond the neutral zone.
b. A fair catch of a free kick is a catch by a Team B player who has made a valid signal during an untouched free kick.
c. A valid or invalid fair catch signal deprives the receiving team of the opportunity to advance the ball. The ball is declared dead at the spot of the catch or recovery. If the catch precedes the signal, the ball is dead when the signal is first given. d. If the receiver shades their eyes from the sun without waving their hand(s), the ball is live and may be advanced.

Valid Signal
ARTICLE 2. A valid signal is a signal given by a player of Team B who has obviously signaled their intention by extending one hand only clearly above their head and waving that hand from side to side of their body more than once.

Invalid Signal
ARTICLE 3. An invalid signal is any waving signal by a player of Team B:

a. That does not meet the requirements of Article 2 (above); or
b. That is given after a scrimmage kick is caught beyond the neutral zone, strikes the ground or touches another player beyond the neutral zone (A.R. 6-5-3-III-V); or
c. That is given after a free kick is caught, strikes the ground or touches another player. [Exception: Rule 6-4-1-f]

By the rulebook, it was 100% the right call. In terms of enforcement consistency, I can't say I've seen it called before in this exact situation. However, it's the kind of play that is super rare because if a returner is waving his gunners off in that way, he almost always doesn't field it or at least doesn't advance it.

Dolphin just said, "The Hawks defeat Minne...er the Gophers defeat Minnesota 12-10." He just can't bring himself to say it.

Only an Iowa beat reporter interviews the ref after the game.

And if you watch the play, Gophers go into the 'get ready to down it mode' on the way down. They interfered on a fair punt catch earlier and they only do the same stupid stunt once per game.

1st quarter of USC versus the team with the fans we all hate already has crushed the Iowa/Minnesota over with 28 points already.

How about not putting your team in that position where you have to have a miracle play to win.

Travis said it's the worst call he's ever seen. Even if it was bad, it's far from the worst.
