The offense felt more structured(I think that's the word I want) when he was in there
Pav understands drive and kick more than Lipsey or Gilbert. It gets the defense moving, which opens driving lanes and gets open threes on late rotations. Lipsey and Gilbert have a tendency to overpenetrate and kick out only as a last resort, which is usually too late.

The ESPN box score says Pav was 0-2 on 3 pointers last night. I know he made a shot late in the game that sure looked like a 3. Anyone get a good view of it?

They never mentioned that it was called a 2. The ref was standing right there and this wasn’t at KU so I assume he called it correctly. There was a stoppage shortly after and I thought they might go to replay
At KU they waive it off and call traveling. Or something.

The Pav to Lipsey alley-oop floater could have used some slow motion and Titanic music. It was a thing of beauty.
I'd like to see that! Anybody? I still have to wait a couple of days for the replay on cyclones.tv. [I'm not getting YouTube this year.]

I have a hard time believing we are at a level where other teams are circling us on the schedule. We are all excited about the recruiting class and the turnaround job TJ has done. But nationally we are just a solid P5 team, three years removed from an abysmal season, no real final four appearances etc. We aren't taking everyone's best shot like a program like Duke or KU has to deal with.

I'll slightly disagree with you, we are a consistent name program, that went to hell when Prohm drove us over the cliff. With what TJ has done, we are a nice measuring stick for a lot of teams. But we can all have our own opinions.

We are consistent, but I don't think we are a team that schools like VA Tech, ATM, or DePaul are really getting up to play. They aren't putting a target on us. They have at least a dozen games on their schedule against programs at our level or better.

The original comment was that these teams are going off on us above their averages because they are extra amped to play us, and I just don't see us at the level that other P6 schools are gunning for us.

I was letting the game flow over me for the most part - I'd had an exhausting week and approached it as, "Let's see what happens."

I got a little concerned with that dry spell in first half and DePaul making every 3. Good close-out to the half, and the 21-2 surge to start the 2nd was fabulous.

People have mentioned defense being iffy, I wouldn't qualify as "outstanding," but it was stellar during that stretch AND led to a ton of transition points.

Ii agree that Ward is missed. Defensive energy, rim protection, rebounding. He's not an offensive threat except for lobs. Biggest value is Tre will seldom be the 5 with Ward and RJones available.

You (or someone) mentioned is a previous post the players improve with this staff's coaching. I agree, which is why I don't agree with the "CJones shouldn't play" sentiment. Same with posts about Pav a couple weeks ago. He's improving. So will Curtis.
I didn't say don't play him. We need him. His shot selection wasn't very good and even if it was I think we have better options each possession.

I'm talking about the assertion that the team is better with Watson on the floor. What instance are you referring to this season that shows this?
Over Omaha? Every time he's in. Especially on defense. Offensively it's kind of a wash since neither are first options, but on defense the team looks way better with Watson in right now. He's been around a lot longer and fully expect that. I'm not knocking Omaha. He's a freshman big. I talked to Omaha's AAU coach last summer and he was spot on. Awesome athlete, but needed to work on his shot a bunch. He loved Fish. Couldn't say enough good things about him.

Iowa State is a name school, 2 straight NCAA appearances. It looks better on their resume’ than Podunk U. We aren’t a blue blood, but our name still matters.

They are high level athletes, they are already conditioned. Rest will do them more good than playing Lipsey 35 minutes against Florida A&M. Omaha needs to be thrown into the fire the next 3 weeks otherwise I'm afraid it could be a lost season for him. We are already 25% done.
Omaha needs minutes, but so does Damarion and Kayden. We have the depth this year, we should use it, for a variety of reasons.

I thought we learned this lesson last year.

No, I'm asking: how does the current team, right now, look better on defense with Watson? When has this happened? What game over the last week or more was there a sequence where Watson made a difference?

Isn't it obvious? Holmes always does better with Watson. Just sayin'.

And I thought last year, with Holmes, would be bad.

The only way I'd say we sort of could be would be in the sense that we're relatively steady in success yet beatable.
You still don't make much of a name beating ISU, though, so that only way doesn't really go very far.
