We've been remarkably successful so far in the NIL era at holding onto our high-impact players in both football and MBB. Tyrese Hunter is the only notable departure I can think of.

Hawk fans say it's because Denny Albaugh is paying them below water.

Has our fanbase reconciled this? There was a lot of “the sky is falling” fears. Maybe that’s more an indication of how ppl view the world.

I think a good bit of it is CW's argument of ~ players still want/need to play. Iowa State's a good place to be if you're a good college player who wants to develop into a great college player / potential NFL/NBA guy. Most of our talent is in that range. So you can get and keep a lot of guys who don't mind making less than their potential NIL elsewhere if they think it's a good payoff for their future in the sport professionally.

Cartevious Norton is the only transfer who has surprised me. He had the physical “look” of a solid D1 RB and CMC spoke highly of him. He never showed anything while at ISU and has yet to do anything at a lower level. Dekkers doesn’t surprise me at the JC level, very strong arm and without pressure from a D1 level rush, his accuracy improves. If he holds up for a full year, he will get another shot at a pretty high D1 level.

Either that, or it means that every year there is an immense crowd in the Portal—especially with COVID years. One of the two.

If you want to see ex-Cyclones at other major schools, that only means our best players are being poached.

Even the traditional powers will have a number of guys transfer to a lower level. If you transfer to another P4 program it may still be hard to crack the two deep.

I'm fairly sure the fallout from the betting thing resulted in Dekkers losing all NCAA eligibility. He'd have to get the NCAA to reconsider his case to play again for any NCAA team and that seems unlikely at best. It's the reason he's at Iowa Western CC. There were probably a lot of FCS/FBS teams that would have taken him.

And not a single one of them is a senior this year. I think that group will be decent this year now that a lot of them have at least a year of experience.

Brezina is the key. If he can continue to play well as a true FR in place of Bacon that more or less bails us out until guys come back from injury. Even though he got some props I didn’t think Sadowsky was very good last year. Brezina looks faster and more athletic. Aside from that, we need McLaughlin back ASAP at one of the OLB spots. I think this is his breakout 1st team all conference type of year.

Really interesting article here with hypothesis on portal-heavy programs. You can hit the height of heights but pretty quickly fall back to Earth.

He uses Michigan State, TCU, and Florida State as examples, but there’s also many examples of portal-heavy programs who still aren’t that successful, Colorado being the most prominent.

In any sport, pro or college, to me, the most sustainable and best way to build a program is home grow and develop the core of your team and supplement holes with the portal/free agents as needed.

Yeah thought that sounded kind of weird for him to work his way back or whatever.

He'll probably need to mature for the NFL too. Repeating but he gave me Ryan Leaf lite vibes.

I would guess this lawsuit against the state will have a bearing on Dekker’s NCAA ruling in his particular instance. If the athletes prevail, it would be precedence for an attorney to argue that Dekkers was judged by the NCAA with illegally acquired evidence. Easy out for the NCAA.

I don’t think the NFL is a realistic option for him, but I could see him doing very well with the xfl/usfl and then getting a chance to tryout after.

I saw Dekkers was named JUCO player of the week last week. I think he threw for over 500 yards and had something like 7 TDs

419 yds & 5 TDs, in a loss.

This is actually the most likely successful path for Dekkers. I was honestly a little surprised he wasn't on a UFL roster this past year. Community college reps aren't proving anything to anyone.

I've always believed Dekkers was a stud with a very high ceiling. I will always cheer for this kid. He made a stupid mistake that's what kids do sometimes. Hopefully he's learned from it and it will help him mature. I think he has a ton of potential. I'm sure CMC still supports him 100%.
