I thought it was kind of inconsistent--there were definitely a few times where I felt there was contact not called on our offensive end that was called on the other end (and Colorado fans probably could point to similar plays the other way). Then I got really annoyed on a couple of MM blocking fouls where he simply moved his feet well and got to the spot before the offensive player.

Honestly, I feel like it isn't as true as it used to be that Iowa State benefits from referees who "let them play." Early in Otz's tenure, it was pretty much guaranteed that anyone going into the lane would have ISU defenders' hands all over them. But I think that this group is much more polished. The guards especially can move more quickly laterally to stay in front of their man without putting both hands on them, plus they have quicker hands when they do reach, meaning they get ball rather than arm a higher percentage of the time.

i really didnt think they were the worst ever. it seemed mostly like a typical road game. i thought they let ISU be physical on D. the lack of calls down the stretch was a bit off, but also ISU had a lead then and refs seem to favor the home team that is trailing in the closing minutes. we probably could have had at least 3 and ones in a 2 minute span that went uncalled while far less contact was getting called. also the quick ticky tack on the floor foul that took away a chatfield layup after a rebound was kind of slimey.

i have watched plenty of games in the state of texas that were far more criminal.

If they called it tight, Keshon would have had gotten two fouls early. He initiates body contact with his man on top of the key in a "Hey, I'm gonna try your jersey on for awhile" kinda way.

Chatfield also could have gotten a call or two while going for offensive rebounds. He gave exactly zero ***** what was between him and the ball last night and I loved every minute of it.

Did anyone else think the refs let way too much contact go without a whistle. I'm not a guy that complains about refs every game, just thought last night was a terrible night for the refs. It wasn't one sided either. Both squads had to play through a lot of contact which might have favored us but I really think our guys were getting mugged on every single drive and rarely got a whistle.
You serious? They called us for all kinds of ticky tacky crap and let Colorado get away with the same.

Not exactly sure.

We finally have enough post players where if one gets into foul trouble, it’s not hard on us.

Agree...there were quite a few stretches of play where it seemed the refs weren't even watching! Way too physical at moments.
I thought Jefferson and Jackson got hammered almost every time they had the ball inside and it was called like 3-4 times at game. I didn't really have any issues with the fouls we were called for though so it wasn't terrible.

I am not sure letting calls go benefits us this year. We have a huge advantage inside against most teams. If they're allowed to grab and push Jackson and Jefferson like they were last night, leading a bunch of missed shots around the basket, I think that hurts us. I also don't think we are nearly as physical defensively as we've been in the past, so refs letting things go doesn't help like it used to.

They were bad. Very bad. But hey, it’s a road conference game. We’ll be seeing this at least half our road games.

If they are consistent, that’s all I care and they consistently let major contact go. Gilbert on one drive bent down to clear while dribbling and a defender two hand shoved him to the floor. I thought it was a little loose but it was consistent.

Raise the standard. They should be consistently good. It’s their job. Jobs are hard. People are still consistently good at hard jobs every day.

We shot a lot more free throws, I don't think the whistle was unfavorable us. Just that it was wildly inconsistent.

I think calling a game loosely benefits us. There were definitely some fouls that went uncalled, but I'd rather see that than a free throw contest.
This 1000%

Althought True, when we get into tournament time and get a closly called game, it causes us to pivot which is fine. As far as getting into a Free throw shooting contest, I never thought I'd say this but this I State team has to be the best top to bottom free throw shooting team we've had in decades.

Refs typically work regionally so there will be a lot of new refs getting familiar with big 12 basketball.
Not so much anymore. The guys working the Big 12 are pretty much national at this point. Higgins is going out and getting the best for his consortium.

For example, last night you had Roger Ayers who used to be all ACC and Big East and he's done a bunch of Big 12 and West Coast games the last 2 years. Ron Groover was an ACC/SEC guy. Tony Padilla did PAC/Big 12.

John Higgins is changing the game and that only benefits his consortium (Big 12, Valley, WCC, WAC, Big West).

The last league that is truly insular and doesn't allow its core officials to work outside games is the Big Ten and the officiating in that league is truly atrocious and actively hurts them come tournament time.

I thought the refs were inconsistent last night but not terrible. We outshot CU by a bunch on FTs…

We’ve all watched enough Big 12 games to know that no crew is going to be perfect and all of them will make bad calls in a given game. Glad we have a coach with TJ’s approach.

We shot 14 more free throws on the road and are complaining about officiating?
No one is saying we were robbed or whatever...some (myself included) thought the refs were letting it get way too physical on BOTH sides and missing or deciding not to call obvious fouls (Heise's dunk attempt for one). Then it has evolved into a discussion of what type of officiating benefits/hurts ISU. That is all...

Bingo. When CO went on their run it seemed to me the refs got a little caught up in the moment. That was my only real complaint. I am also smart enough to know I carry a bias, perhaps those cardinal shaded glasses were distorting reality.

I am of the ilk that as long as the game is called consistently for both teams then I am fine with the officiating.
