How?

Also this is my first time hearing about Total Sports. Must be a big deal.
They didn’t really accuse ISU of anything. They took it from Barstools interview with Rothstein this morning. It was barstool big cat (huge Wisconsin fan) that asked the question if it was a smart decision to hide the info (it 1000% was) and Rothstein said it was “possible” the committee could’ve flipped them had they known Gilbert was out. Total pro sports is just a garbage sports blog

I'll be pretty ecstatic if we ever make the Final 4. I would have to do some research, but since 1980 I bet we are pretty high up there for most tournaments appearances without one.
Fair point, but i bet we still arent top 20. I would bet BYU is probably close to the top too

I'll check if I have time today, kids are on spring break.

Just from memory, the current Big 12 I've got 8 out of the 16, Kansas, Baylor, Texas Tech, Houston, West Virginia, Arizona, Utah(Rick Majerus?), and Oklahoma St.

Teams that haven't made it. Iowa St, BYU, UCF, Kansas St, Arizona St, Cinncinatti, Colorado, and TCU. Of those I'd probably say ISU and KSU have most tourney appearances, then maybe BYU, the rest don't make the tourney enough unless maybe I'm underestimating Cinncinatti?

Likely true. Also near the top in terms of NOT converting Sweet 16 to Elite Eight

Below is the all-time top 20. We’re not on the list due to 1944.

But given 22 of our 23 tournaments prior to this one came in the previous 40 seasons, with no FF, I’d guess we’re in top 20 since 1980, as you stated. In theory there could be schools with more tournaments since 1985 that also had their FF before that

I'd have to look, but just off the top of my head I can remember many Power 5 programs that have made it just in my lifetime.

Would you rather ISU be good-really good most years with a stable program or a flash in the pan FF appearance but forgettable about any other year?

Personally I'll take the former.

NCSt went to one last year then just fired their coach because they weren't very good again.

Every blue blood that has many FF appearances have also fallen flat on their face in March.

So many things have to go right and hopefully ISU can pull it off one year.

True, but NC State won a national championship in 1984 and were very competitive up until the last decade or so.

And the only reason anyone thinks of that is because of the story and Jimmy V which is a great story so it's deserving.

Otherwise personally I couldn't name 5 national champs from the 80s without looking.

Let's live in the 'now' and see what happens.

Indiana (2x), UNC, Villanova, NC State, Louisville (2 or 3), Michigan.
I'm forgetting a really fun one, but since I'm forgetting, I have no idea who it was.

Edit: I forgot Kansas from 1988. Fitting.

That's the point, though. You never know when a successful stretch for a program will come to an end. This was true even before players could transfer at the drop of a hat and coaches prioritized schools' budgets for paying players above even their own salaries. I'd desperately like ISU to make a Final Four, but the next best thing is them being competitive in the Big 12 every season and making the tournament often. After Michigan State and Gonzaga—who've made the tournament for almost 30 consecutive years—Purdue has the third-longest tournament streak, at 10 years. Even Kansas is "only" on a six year streak. I share people's frustration with all of ISU's bad breaks this season, but for Otz to have four tournament teams in four seasons—given what he was working with the first two—is more amazing than we sometimes give credit for. And, as someone noted in a thread weeks ago, most programs have to knock on the tournament door for a while before they break through and make deep runs. There are outliers, and that fact can also be frustrating. But those teams almost never sustain success, which is what's necessary to build a championship program

I think everyone would be ecstatic about making a Final Four.
Things are good though, our program is stable.
Keep the hope alive and don't get too down.

I forgot about Cincinnati in 1992. It looks like they played the Fab 5 in Minneapolis that year in the Final 4. So that's 9 Big 12 teams.

Just scratching the surface but just looked and KU was a lowly 6 seed with 11 losses including 3rd place finish in the Big 8 and getting trounced by KSU in the Big 8 tourney.

Michigan was a 3 and didn't win the B1G and lost on senior day and lost to Alaska-Anchorage in the non-con.

'Nova was an 8 seed and wasn't even ranked.

Such disappointing seasons!

Amen.
I also omitted Georgetown. I remembered them beating Houston, but couldn't remember if it was the semifinals or title game. After looking it up, title game, for (I think) Phi Slamma Jamma's 3rd trip to the Final Four without a title. Disappointing.

Edit: Also, regarding Kansas, that was the "Danny and the Miracles" team that won it all in Kansas City. I think that's the last time the title game wasn't in a giant dome.
I know 89 was in the Seattle Kingdome, and was an awesome place to be for the first OT Championship game.

Kansas State hasn’t been to a FF since your 1980 date (four appearances prior to that), but they have converted 6 Sweet 16 appearances into 5 Elite Eights in that time span. For comparison we have 7 with one Elite Eight

Your point about being relatively successful in making the tournament but without deep runs is valid.

After watching the CW and Blum podcast yesterday it’s very obvious CW is very depressed about the Gilbert news. I get it. It’s hard to not get down about that kind of news when this team was honestly expected to make a final 4 run and now that is seeming very unlikely.
You have that segment after the season is over. The day after Selection Sunday is prime time to look at the bracket and build anticipation for the tournament, not spend the main segment of the show lamenting a lost season (one in which ISU is a 3 seed and still very much alive). Then he spends a minute blaming the chat for being sensitive. The chat wasn't being sensitive, CW just missed the mark on what the audience expected/wants to listen to. It's one of the best weeks of the year, and we're letting a tavern hok drive discussion on ISU when his team is just trying to find someone to coach their team?

I visited the King Dome once, summer of '96. Our host on that vaca was a former engineer for the City of Seattle. I'll never forget his comment that the King Dome was infested with rats and that they should tear it down. 2,000 mi from home to see the Mariners play the Twins (always been my dad's team, I'm a casual fan), good times!
