Well, they do - if the Tigers have to rely on its bullpen and don't get it straightened out between now and then.

In the playoffs, your 4 and 5 starters are your bullpen. And I'm sure Sanchez and Porcello can hold their own.

And I'm also sure Soria and Chamberlain can hold their own as well.

Along with this, Scherzer won't be a Tiger next year. So they won't worry about how many innings he eats this postseason. So if he throws a complete game and they want him to throw 2 innings to days later, they might as well do it.

Maybe they'll try flipping Gomes to Kansas City? I'd read a few days ago that the Royals were interested in him.

No freaking way! Gomes is productively (OBP) better than Cespedes and a HUGE Oakland via Petaluma favorite. He takes the sting from losing Cespedes.

After Detroit falls to the Angels, you mean?

Martinez/Cabrera would probably win head to head against Trout/Pujols. So I would take the Tigers bats over the Angels.

And same with pitching but that should be obvious. Not many teams have a #4 that would've been an opening day starter for 90% of other teams.

I have tickets to two games next week. Already been to about 10 games this year. I am stoked. Going to miss Cespy's huge hits and his big arm. I'm not going to miss him fumbling the ball and missing catches.

Oakland is all in. In Billy we trust!!!!

I know that Porcello and maybe Sanchez are going to the bullpen, and that Chamberlain, Soria, and Nathan are already there. I'm just saying Nathan and Chamberlain (especially lately) have been shaky in stretches, and Soria, the guy that a lot of Tigers fans have already replaced Nathan with as closer, has been total garbage since he was acquired. Not to mention the Tigers employed this strategy with Fister, Smyly, and Porcello last year, and the bullpen ultimately ended up being what cost the Tigers against the Red Sox. The Tigers had a lot of leads and the bullpen blew them.

Don't get me wrong - I like the Tigers' chances. They will likely have the best 4 starters of any team in the playoffs, and the offense has the ability to go off on any given evening. It wouldn't stun me if they added even more arms in the bullpen. I'm just saying I'm only one of 4+ million people in the Detroit metro that gets nervous every single time they have to go to the bullpen. But basically, as long as they don't have to go to Phil Coke, I think we'll be okay.

As a huge A's fan I'm saddened by this move. Cespedes has been a big part of this team and it's ridiculous run differential. Whether they win now or not - a big piece of this team is missing. Clubhouse chemistry has been key for the A's for years. Cespedes was the "pie guy" after Reddick went on the DL. Sending Milone down had a clear effect on the team. These guys are friends and pride themselves on having fun - they can't help now but look it as a business rather than a game.
I believe Gomes was part of the deal to help with all that. He's a "clubhouse" guy. But every A's fan knows (as well as the team) that we wouldn't be where we are today without Cespedes - it seems wrong to not give him a shot at a title.
Billy could spend a billion dollars and buy the entire AL All-star starting lineup today to try to "win" a World Series for the A's. At that point they would no longer be the A's to me though.
As someone who has watched most of their games for the past 15 years - this one does not feel right.

Thank you for reminding me about Jarod Parker! That guy has tremendous stuff and Tommy John should only make him come back stronger (I hope). I highly doubt that Vogt is platooned. The guy is hitting .351 right now and has been hitting around that average for a while now, proving he's not just on some big surge. His power numbers aren't anything special, but he gets on base and averages an RBI every two games, which is solid. My guess is the outfield will be Moss, Crisp, Reddick with Vogt playing 1st Base a lot and Gomes starting every third game for Reddick in an effort to keep him healthy since he's always getting hurt.

I still don't think the A's are done making deals today. Utley would be a nice big help to the middle infield, which is struggling. If Utley comes to Oakland, that should seal the deal. It's a good time to be an A's fan!

I think Coco is hurt and will need the rest as much as Reddick. Not sure when gentry comes back.

I love the trade. Cespy was gone after next year. He is a mediocre outfielder with one hell of an arm.

I'm not sure about the clubhouse issue. Gomes was huge with the team chemistry 2 years ago. They are professionals.

As doo put it about Detroit...*lowers sunglasses*"They made that trade because of us"*raises sunglasses*

I guess I don't look at the kids as commodities. I wish players were more loyal in their off-season negotiations but that can partially be contributed to the parasites.
I simply feel bad for a guy that has played a big part (on and off the field) of making the 2014 A's what they are right now. To me it's not about the logo - it's about the team- the people. That's been key for the low market A's for years.
Billy seems to want a monkey off his back. But as Larry Eustachy said - a league title is more impressive than stringing together some wins in a tournament. It seems like Beane is going "all-in" for the end-of-the-year spectacle but I don't care as a fan if you're not dancing with the ones that brought you.

My seven year old is upset Cespedes is gone. He loves him. We saw him hit two home runs recently. Taking him on Monday, I bet he has a blast as he always does. I think Coco is the key to this team. He is the leader.

Jim Johnson was a huge clubhouse guy. Billy upgraded by letting him go. This is an upgrade too.

I just want to say I think it's pretty cool that a team that's nearly 2000 miles and half a continent away and is nearly always overshadowed by higher profile West Coast teams, can generate over 3000 views, nearly 100 replies, and 7 pages of overall discussion on an Iowa State Cyclones message board.

Tigers see Lester and raise Price.

Geez. A's have no chance to beat the Tigers now.

A Cubs fan saying the A's have no chance in the playoffs...

The A's staff is still much better even with the addition of Price. Verlander has been garbage all season and Fister is gone from last year's staff. I'd easily take Gray, Lester, Samardzija, and Kazmir over Price, Verlander, Scherzer, and Sanchez (since teams only use 4 starters in the postseason). Here's an interesting factoid to compare the two rotations: Not one pitcher on the A's has an ERA above 3.00. Not one pitcher on the Tigers has an ERA below 3.00.

The A's have outscored the Tigers by quite a few runs this season. I may be a homer since I'm a huge A's fan, but this team is more than good enough to beat the Tigers this time around. I don't think they'll have a problem with the Tigers.

Verlander has been too involved with his GF to keep the balls down enough. Too many homeruns.

And the Tigers won the season series 5-2. Your point?

The Tigers also faced Millone, Chavez (x2), and Mills in those games. None of those guys will be pitching in the postseason as a starter. Clown statement by you trying to put down the A's.

Yea I kind of chuckle at everyone handing the AL pennant to Detroit because of the Price trade. What has Price proven in the postseason as a starter? Verlander has been average at best this year and will take a rotation spot from either Sanchez or Porcello in the playoffs. how about the bullpen...they completely blew the ALCS last year. Detroit is a damn good team but slow down on saying they're a runaway favorite.

All this talk of Detroit and Oakland...I'd laugh if Anaheim ended up winning the pennant
