Seems a fair opinion especially with Detroit's starters experience in the playoffs.
That is still past and the present perfomance, if you look at the ERA's this year, the A's would look to have the better staff. I think most would take the A's relief pitching over Detroits with out queston.

A's team 4th in MLB 3.16 ERA Tigers 23rd in MLB 4.04 ERA

John Lester 2.59 David Price 3.11
Scott Kazmir 2.37 Justin Verlander 4.66
Sonny Gray 2.59 Max Sherzer 3.27
Jeff Samardzija 2.92 Anibal Sanchez 3.57
Jason Hammel 3.87 Rick Porcello 3.18

Verlander really hasn't looked like Cy Young Verlander for 2 years and as good as Scherzer and Sanchez are they do have nights were they get wild. There is a reason why the Tiger's needed to get Price.

Hopefully we'll get to see the Detroit/Oakland matchup in the ALCS and let them decide it on the field.

Verlander is spending too much time collecting daisies for kate.

Derek Norris came through again last night in the 10th with a 2 out, 2 strike, bases loaded single to beat the Rays and stay a game up on the Angels.

They gotta knock off these extra inning games on weeknights. Ugh... not an awake morning for me.

Buster, I feel your pain. Being an A's fan that lives on the east coast, when I stay up to watch these extra inning games, I'm not getting to bed until 2 AM. It is, however, a good way to end a night watching a walk-off like Norris's right before going to sleep.

Definitely helps with a good ending like that! Forced myself to go to bed in the 7th inning last night when they were up 3-0. Fortunately, the score held and Hammel actually got a win as an A! Back to a 2 game lead thanks to the Dodgers <yak>. It hurts the Giants, but helps the A's, so I can live with that.

I can breathe a sigh of relief because the lead is back to 2 games now. It still is a bit scary that the Angels are a great team and will continue to make it a dog fight all season long.

Yeah they haven't exactly come out hitting on all cylinders since the break. Losing a series to KC and a series to Houston doesn't feel so great.

Not having Coco is huge. He is way more important to this team than any other player. I'm glad he is back and the slump has ended until his neck is hurt again.

Another issue with missing the late innings in this particular game is missing the fact the A's now appearently have a "Rally Possum" which wandered into left field along the warning track in the bottom of the 10th.
(BTW more evidence Oakland needs a new stadium)

"Ultimately, the possum shuffled back into the crevices of the Coliseum. The A's then loaded the bases with two walks, allowing Norris to do his thing.
Samardzija, who scattered five hits and a walk for two runs over seven innings but wound up with a no-decision, gave the credit where he thought it was due.
"We're going to have to give him a name, get him a jersey," Samardzija said of the possum. "We've got to keep feeding him."
Guess it worked for the Angels and their monkey... so there is that.

I have tickets to today's game but can't go. Does anyone want them?

I would have if I lived there! Am considering making the trek out there for the playoffs again (crossing my fingers and not counting chickens before they hatch, etc., etc.). Had such a good time last year! Watching on the computer at work right now and not liking the score - down 4-0.

I'm listening to it. Sonny is having a tough day.

The A's took game one of their series with the Twinkies last night, 3-0, for win #70. The Dodgers beat the Angels again, so Oakland's lead in the AL West is back to three games. I went to bed after the 7th. Couldn't keep my eyes open last night.

3-hit complete game shutout for Lester. :jiggy:

Also, thank you LA Dodgers. A's could really use a sweep of the Twins.

Living in Minneapolis I only get so many chances to watch A's games real time so I efforted the late night. It was over in 2.5 hours which was a plus. Lester was dominiate, complete game 3 hitter. The exact reason why Billy Bean made the trade. Go up against a struggling team shut down their offense and rest the bullpen on 120 pitches. Kazmir chance to do the same today.

You actually should care. If they don't win, they won't even play in October.

While that is true, it is like rooting for the Sharks. You don't want to get your hope up too much before they find a way to crush your soul.

I am not a hockey fan, but am always disappointed the Sharks cannot do ANYthing in the postseason. However, at least the A's have a history of winning the WS in the past. I take that as proof it can happen again. Yes, it's been 25 years since the last one and 40 years since the title prior to that. But the Giants had not won a title since moving from NY, then they won two of three starting in a season where they didn't even claim their own division title until game 162. It's ok to be hopeful - we're not talking Cubs here!

Btw, Oaktown jumped out to a 6-0 lead on the Twins and hung on to win 6-5. The Angels lost to Boston, so the A's are back to a 4 game lead in the West. =)
