ISU will not be 5-0. People need to stop saying that. A real chance at 4-1 or 3-2 worst case though.

I never said ISU WILL start the season 5-0, I said the first 5 games on ISU's schedule were "SHOULD WIN" games, more to prove the point that if/when ISU starts next season at 1-4 or 0-5, the people that keep saying "too young" and "too injured" can shut up because starting 1-4 or 0-5 against that schedule is a clear sign the program has hit rock bottom and Rhoads should be dismissed at that point.

I'm on record as wanting CPR out now, but I can realistically see the Cyclones starting 5-0 next season. Wins after that will be tough to come by, but one upset to close out the year and Rhoads will have every opportunity to save his job.

I can realistically see myself winning the lottery.

Edit: We go 1-4 through those first 4 games. Paul looses to an FCS team 3 years in a row and still doesn't get fired. ISU beats Toledo.

I think we fall just short of upsetting Northern Iowa at home and start the season 1-4.

Maybe CPR can convince Braxton Miller to come to Ames for his senior season. Then he signs every JUCO AA on defense and OL. Bo Pelini becomes the DC as Wally retires.

There is the perfect storm for possibly talking about a 4-1 start.

I think we could be really good on offense if we can find a good replacement for Farniok. Need at least four players on defense to really step in or step up along with normal improvement from our key guys in the secondary. LB and DL seem like the huge factor.

Have we proven otherwise that we can beat teams like this?

That's the point, guy.

If Rhoads is still here next season (and he will be), we won't start off 5-0. Nor will we be 4-1 or 3-2. Just in case you guys haven't noticed, we've won 5 games in 2 years. I have no idea what makes people think we're all of a sudden going to be all kinds of better with everything the same (coaches, players, etc).

I've very much ok with saying ISU SHOULD start 5-0. Being that we are in the BigXII.

Will we actually pull that off? Most likely no.
Would I love to see it - yes please!

But really I'd say we are looking at 2 wins to start those first 5 games. I hope and pray it is more. I just haven't seen anything that points to more than that the last 600 plus days of ISU football.

I hate to say it, but you can't predict more wins for next year. Our Lines will be a bit more experienced, but our current lineman have only showed flashes of being able to compete on both D and O. We will have the same QB leading the Offense.

Every win is going to be a battle next year. Maybe if they get rolling, and we avoid injuries we can roll off a few in a row but the ceiling for the team will again be 4-6 games. The compete level of these guys is not close to even the KU team under their interim Coach.

We get Bundrage back, but lose Bibbs. Same QB will probably be starting, and RB will be a question mark.

1 to 2 wins out of the first 5 looks to be the ceiling for this team unless something major changes. If we start 0-5 at least we know its because he didn't donate enough and we can all dig deep and invest a little bit more.

Well, to quote a number of posts from the previous off-season, "The defense can't be any worse!" I'm really looking forward to that familiar refrain in the coming months.

It happens every year. That's why our stadium is completely packed and full for the 1st few games then the last few games are played with a half empty stadium.

Half Full! C'mon man! We're Cyclones!

It's a great start to a schedule to give a brand new staff more momentum out recruiting.

Its a bit silly to make predictions at this point, because how good this team can be is going to depend somewhat on the JC recruits we line up. Add a couple top knotch DT's (Tucker/Leath)...a few of whom we seem to have a VERY good shot at...and perhaps a solid Juco LB or two...and the defense takes on an entirely different look. Guys like Cousin, Garcia and Meyer become solid depth guys rather than not quite ready for prime time starters. Harris is going to be good at LB, so adding a couple high level Jucos there puts Knott, Peters, Meeks, Seeley and crew in that "backup" role as well...where they can contribute but not be expected to perform at levels they are incapable of.

Honestly, the secondary looks decent already, especially if we can reel in Jomal Wiltz or Antoine Albert. So the defense has a real chance of being "less bad" with such additions. So before making predictions, it would seem wise to wait and see what we have coming in...because SOME Jucos can make a big impact (see KSU).

Predictions after February's signing day are going to be much more accurate IMHO.

No they aren't. Predicting the contributions of JuCo's is an absolute crapshoot. Assuming guys like Harris are all of a sudden going to become serviceable players out of no where is nothing but wishful thinking. Can it happen? Sure. Is it likely - especially with the track record this staff is showing in player development? Absolutely not.

In CPR's first 4 years, it took him 4 games, 5 games, 3 games and 3 games to get to 3 wins. Not sticking up for the guy, but he has shown he CAN start the season winning games.

I'm not assuming anything....though you certainly seem to be.

All I said was that the picture will be a lot clearer after we sign our recruiting class...and while JC guys are a crap shoot at times, you overstate that fact. If we bring in 7 Jucos on defense, and some of them are of the quality of guys like Demond Tucker....its reasonable to expect SOME of them will have a very positive impact. Its not like they have a really high bar...they just need to be better than this year's gang and that is achievable. As for Harris, I'm going off some things I've heard about his ability level...kid is slow learning the system but his talent is well above anything else we have at linebacker, and he's coming around on the learning part. I'm glad we redshirted him...and it may turn out to be very positive that Ayeni took a redshirt as well.

Nobody is painting with rainbows here, but you're wrong to "assume" there's no hope.

We had should win games on our schedule the last two years. Did we recruit a **** Butkus for the linebackers?

Look, I'm not saying we start 5-0. I don't think CPR has proven that he can deliver wins in close games, and like several of you pointed out these are tossup games. This is likely to be on paper the easiest first 6 games Rhoads has had in his soon to be 7 seasons. However, in true Iowa State fashion, I can actually see us winning the first 5 and losing 7 in a row to close the season for the true shot to the jewels that we all know is coming.
