I feel like Gary Barta is behind this. That's why they stopped calling it a play-in game and gave 60 teams byes into the "2nd" round.

Tomorrow we either have to root for Notre Dame or listen to the insufferable BiG garbage of their play-in dominance.Last year's First Four was really good. This year, not so far.
That was really bad basketball. The game tommorrow night will probably be just as bad. You have Rutgers who cant score going up against Notre Dame that has Swiss cheese defense.
Something will have to give.
I checked the box score. 10 turnovers! He had a double-double (points and turnovers).Ike is a good player, Maldonado...what a pathetic performance from him
World needs ditch diggers too.I checked the box score. 10 turnovers! He had a double-double (points and turnovers).
NCAA Tourney-related content. ESPN did a ranking of the top-20 NCAA Tournament's of all-time. The first one listed (#20) is the dreaded 2001 tournament solely due to Hampton's upset of us. That's really it to go along with an exciting Rd of 64 with a bunch of close games. They even say the rest of the tournament was nothing special.
What is it about that 15/2 upset that makes it the only one people remember? Has to be the Hampton coach reaction. The game was not a particularly well-played game. I mean it wasn't even the first time a 15 beat a 2. And we've had plenty of others since then. Why does everyone always gloss over 2012 when we had two 2/15 upsets (Norfolk State/Mizzou and Lehigh/Duke), as well as the South and Midwest Regions each having multiple double-digit seeds win the first Round and even make the Sweet 16.

100% this. That team limped into that tournament and was not playing anywhere close to a 2 seed. Still shouldn't have lost that game, but it's just weird that's the one STILL everyone brings up. I would argue the Norfolk State's upset of Missouri as a 15/2 was way bigger. Anyone remember how crazy people were about Missouri going to the Final Four that year? They were in almost everyone's bracket I can remember from national pundits to casual fans to make it to the Final Four the way they were playing with Pressey and Co.If CF were a thing in 2001 the 'they don't look like a tourney team' narrative would be loud and strong.
They were a shell after Texas and then looked just awful in the B12 tourney and Boise.
2015 was bad because you could see it unfold, Boise was awful because as bad as it was there was a 'well they should hold on' after getting up a good margin late.
I'm gonna go hurl now.

I watched that game live in St. Louis. The MT kid, think his name was Diddy, was clutch.MSU got similar "Final Four" buzz in '16, when it lost to Middle Tennessee*. (I was like everyone, that was my top choice for a non-1 reaching Final Four). That seems lost in the shuffle, maybe in part because there finally was a 16-over-1 and that gets more attention recently. Also, by the time MSU/MT upset, there had been three other 15/2's within four seasons, so the novelty wasn't there.
(I do think MT was underseeded by at least a line, but that's just opinion)
It probably has to do with the fact that it was the biggest upset (by seed) in history at that point.NCAA Tourney-related content. ESPN did a ranking of the top-20 NCAA Tournament's of all-time. Saw Maldonado play in HS and against CSU several times in college. That was an off night for him. Don’t think he was used to Indiana’s size. There are quite a few 6’5”/6’6” inside players in the MWC. Indiana is much taller.I checked the box score. 10 turnovers! He had a double-double (points and turnovers).
But it wasn't. Coppin State had already pulled the 15/2 over South Carolina years ago. Unless you are talking overall seeding, which nobody truly cares about. A 1 is a 1 and 2 is a 2 when comparing them to 16's and 15's.It probably has to do with the fact that it was the biggest upset (by seed) in history at that point.
What's funny is we've had the 16 over a 1 finally, but truthfully I don't think that game really gets talked about all that much come tournament time. It's mentioned of course, but still to this day there is almost always a shot of the Hampton coach, again because the celebration was really iconic.MSU got similar "Final Four" buzz in '16, when it lost to Middle Tennessee*. Also Missouri I believe was still the biggest favorite (-30.5 possibly?) to lose in the 1st Round when they lost to Norfolk State, so it's just funny ESPN used that '01 tournament of all the ones with a 15/2. Hell we've had a couple of 15's make the Sweet 16, which is more impressive than a single upset.
