Allen or Mcgee at point

It depends on who takes over at point. If it's Allen, Scottie has a legit chance of beating out McGee. If McGee takes over at PG, Scottie likely wont beat out Allen for SG.

Babb could be thrown in that as well, they are all three similar.

Not sure Allen would be a lock to beat out Scotty with his career 43.7% while Allen's BEST season was 39.8%.

Most people who had issues with DG had issues with him as the go-to in the last 30 seconds. Undeniable he was extremely valuable on the whole of the game.

But feel free to misrepresent what people were saying.
That may be misrepresenting some people, but I sure remember some who had issue with him period. This is probably more for those people.

Well scotty is the best 3 point shooter on the team. But allen is a better defender, better passer it seems, way more athletic and just as good a shooter and he can get in the lane. So i think he beats out scotty...

Comparing apples to oranges considering Scotty is playing PG and Allen is playing SG. Here read my post, post #72 of this thread, in which I attempt to explain the situation. I agreed that Allen would make a better PG, but that Scotty should also start.

He is not terrible with the ball and doesn't turn it over much, but he definitely does not look like a PG. He's just not quick enough and is not comfortable taking the risks necessary to drive to the basket. If you put any 2 guard into the PG spot they will most likely feel the same way. In the 2 spot you usually catch the ball with the defender slacking off you playing help D and you can do a fake drive and shoot or do a fake shot and drive, or just shoot if they slack off too much. That is a lot different than bringing the ball up the court with everyone set and your defender expecting you to drive. I think Allen would be our best option since he had 7 assists last night and after watching the CCL he definitely appears to be able to create more. I think his injury is holding him back and he will take over when he is recovered, but the start and stop quickness of a PG probably would not feel too great with a hip pointer. McGee had 0 assists in 25 minutes of play but went 3 for 3 from behind the arc. I'm not sure he would be much different than Scotty running the point.

Not really. First off, if scotty continues to start then so be it. He is a great shooter and he has been a great cyclone. But do you honestly not see his flaws? He CAN NOT play D. Thats a fact not my opinion. Allen or mcgee should get the chance to be the point guard. If mcgee proves to be just as good a shooter who plays better defense that has a better handle than scotty then please tell me why mcgee shouldnt start over scotty? Because scotty had to score for ISU's terrible team that went 6 deep last year? And i dont think im bashing scotty at all, i just think it would be better for the team if he was the 6th man. JMO

So, I just watched the highlights for the first time after watching the game. I don't understand how anyone can not like Chris Allen. Once he gets healthy and making shots, he'll be a star. I think the more the ball is in his hands the better. Allen, Royce, and Babb should have the ball in their hands more than anyone.

So far, Fred doesn't think so. Allen should and probably will be the point once he recovers from his injury. They brought McGee in to be the point, and he has not shown that capability. It's hard to be a great shooter for a terrible team, when they know you are a shooter they stick to you closer. If McGee does prove to be as good of shooter and plays better defense/has better handle, I'm not going to disagree with you. But he has not proven he can play at a position we recruited him for and to this point it is hard to tell who the better player is, though Fred seems to think Scotty is at this point. I understand why one would have these thoughts on Scotty's play this season and I think we can all agree he has not shown he is a PG, but I am not convinced he should be the 6th man.

The more I hear that McGee was recruited as a PG the more I think Fred is an idiot. The first two things we heard about McGee were he's a great scorer and 3 point shooter, and he played the 2 as a freshman and was going to play the 1 in his sophomore year. That is pretty obvious the guy is a combo guard. If he's a combo guard in JUCO, you can guarantee he's a combo guard at the D1 level. Thats why I believe he was recruited to be the combo guard off the bench, and thats what he is. Therefore Fred is not an idiot.

I think Fred is over thinking the Allen/Scotty roles.

There were a lot of times that CA drove the lane, which collapsed, and still went up with it. McGee was sitting on the wing once, and in the corner the other time, wide open. I don't think we've seen McGee play the pg position. Most of his touches have been to shoot the ball, or dish inside to RW. I would like to see him take up the ball and truely play the pg position. CA would be my second choice, mainly because I believe it would be most efficient overall, if McGee couldn't get it done. The more the ball is in CA's hands, the better chance of him heating up, I also like the fact that he has the capability/confidence to pull up at anytime (including early in the shot clock). So my first choice at pg would be McGee, if not, then CA. But Babb and SC should be playing a lot of minutes regardless of who starts. Babb has proven to play good defense and look up the court immediately after a D stop.

A lot of the problems this team has is not major, IMO. I thought they were until I rewatched the game. Shots just weren't falling, Intensity was the largest concern (and that leads to horrible D from almost everybody on the team). Besides that, just gelling, RW and CA still seem to be a half step slow of the capabilities. I wouldn't let this game get to you too much. It was one of those rivalry games that shots were falling for Drake + home court advanatage + a couple of late calls in the opposite direction.

And let's not forget ... part of this team's problem is poor defense, and few true fast break chances. I'd like to see more pressing, and to me that means more McGee.

Still need a PG, pretty obvious "by committee" isn't going to work --- fortunately there's time to experiment in the non-con. Would personally like to see CA there.

It's hard to press when you have no depth. We played three guys 37 minutes or more. It's obvious Fred doesn't trust his bench at all at this point.

Unfair comparison of a SG playing PG for the first time and a SG playing SG. Scotty doesn't have to guard their best shooter or ball handler, we have three plus guards on the court at all time, and the help defense was pretty poor all night as well.
My post asked you to look at last years stats when SC was playing SG. He got ate up at the 2 also. He's flat out not a PG and if he has to shift back he'd have to beat out Mcgee or Allen. Both are better players than Scotty.

Which is strange, considering how he has talked about how much better our depth is supposed to be this year. Booker should be playing more than 8 minutes, and 25 for McGee seems low as well. This really isn't any different from last year...

Hopefully once Railey comes off suspension he can spell RW for some minutes to get some rest so he isn't dead tired at the end of games.

That part's a concern. If we're not going to play guys, we're going to have last year's problem of fatigue down the stretch. I'd rather not go down that road again.

I'd like to see Allen at point, with Scottie and McGee splitting time at the 2. Doesn't matter who starts. I think Scottie at the point is a double whammy, as he simply isn't suited for the position, and we're taking him away from where he is definitely effective.

I was on vacation last week, so it's possible I missed this, but is Tavon Sledge leaving the program?

Some guy just called in to Murph & Andy and mentioned he was unhappy and is leaving.

Edit: Never mind, it looks like a separate thread started up after I posted this.

It is truly painful to watch Scotty C at the point. His defense is even worse. My lineup would consist of:

PG-McGee
SG-Allen
SF-Babb
PF-Ejim
C-White

With Scotty C coming off the bench for either McGee or Allen. Bubu will play some off the bench and Booker for Ejim or White.

We really play better when McGee is in there. IMO McGee has shown more effort and hustle than anyone on the team and he needs to be rewarded for it. I do think Scotty C is a good player and definitely need him for us to win this year but he is soooooooo not a PG.

I don't know what the answer is, but I know what it's not and that's SC running the point on a consistent basis. He'll do fine to spell some people (I'd rather see that than Bubu) but we can't be competitive this year with him being the primary ball handler.

And don't even get me started about his on ball defense (and our complete lack of understanding of help defense as well).
