A coach for the big men

Jared Homan. I think he would be a intriguing pick. He really would have Euro connections since hes still there, although i read on google he might go to the Phillipines. Certainly could teach players a few tricks and toughen them up.

Why is a gut that is 27-28 gonna quit playing ball and come coach? THINK

I don't mind a former college/pro player, but at some point you need some coaching experience. I'd like Bill Cartwright. Or maybe former Timberwolves assistant Ed Pinckney. Even Krafcisn would be a better pick than Homan.

Yeah...lets have a staff where everyone has no coaching experience. Just because you played it doesn't automatically mean you can coach. Jeesh.

Re: Coach Morgan

2005 scouting report for Iowa St.

This is one of the most interesting statistical gems I've seen on the KenPom site. In 2005, we had the 8th best defense in the country, and were able to force a ton of turnovers. Yet we had only the 127th best offense in the country, and that number doesn't take in to account the increased offensive production we should have had from forcing so many turnovers on defense. We also basically played a 6-man rotation. And we didn't win a game for almost a whole month in January, meaning we finished 9-2 in Big 12 play. Just a truly fascinating team, looking back.

Yeah, that team was crazy. Was playing awful at the beginning of Big 12 play, that was one of the best teams in the country towards the end of the year. Obviously the stats don't lie, we were great defensively and bad offensively... some ISU fans have very selective memory when it comes to Morgan's teams.

We really were a pretty poor offensive team. Not a very good jump shooting team at all, and 1 of our only 2 big men was mostly just a dunk and put-back guy on offense. We all know that Clark was pretty limited offensively in a half-court game. And Carr really had a handful of very good games but at times didn't contribute much at all. That zone defense was just so tough when we got it together, it was the key to our wins.

If it weren't so crucial to bring in some assitants with college experience, and it is, I'd say Freddy should call up Kevin McHale. Guy was a crappy NBA exec, but by all accounts he did do some nice work with KG in his early days.

Re: Coach Morgan

Ya your right Mcdermotts 59-68, 18-46 in big 12, 1-20 against ranked oppoents, 14 players transferred or quit is such a better coach than Wayne Morgans 55-39, 22-26, 17 wins at home which is 2nd most all time, 94.4 winning % at home, beating teams like Kansas, Texas, Xavier, Georgia, Marquette, Flordia State

Re: Coach Morgan

And with the "8th best defense in the country" and supposed "superior coaching" we somehow managed to lose 6 games in a row, which included losses to ****-poor K-State and Colorado and mediocre Missouri and Xavier teams, lost to mediocre Nebraska and aTm teams later in the season, and earlier in the season lost to UNI - you know, the team that the Morgan supporters often spout that is a team that "ISU should never lose to". In fact, with this "8th best team in the country" and "superior coaching" we managed to only win 19 games that season.

But yeah, don't confuse the Morgan supporters with facts, it messes up their make believe world...

It is absolutely surreal reading a Cyclone fan trashing easily the best team we have had in the past 9 years, especially after the train wreck the past 5 years have been. Considering this team was the bright spot of the past decade, I can easily forget losing to a couple low level Big 12 teams and focus on the incredible winning streak and run towards the end of the season.

Plus, you obviously confused yourself with the numbers. That team was the 8th best defensive team in the country but was not a good offensive team at all. Very limited offensively with such a small rotation and few players with offensive talent.

Maybe we could get Stinson to coach our guards.

Re: Timeline for assistant coaches?

Filling these staff spots is the critical task for him to get right.

I hope he takes his time (like CPR did) and finds the right people (like CPR did).

The stability of retaining Otz and having Grayer in place gives him the luxury of doing this search the way and at the pace he chooses.

He said he had some business to take care of with the T-Wolves, so I assumed it would be this weekend, or early next week.

Sooner the better. Need to start hitting the recruiting trail for 2011.

With 4 or 5 scholarships open next year...other than Cook, what do we go for?

I think 1 true point guard, 1 combo guard, 1 shooting guard and maybe a center/power forward.

Thats if we have 5.

The same questions were raised when Rhoads was hired and was also because of "recruiting".

I would say his timeline worked out for the better...

Re: Who will be Fred's on bench mentor?

I remember during the press conference and the interviews that Fred mentioned he wanted a white hired gentleman with lots of D1 coaching experience on his staff. The first thought that crossed my mind upon hearing that was: "Is Tom Davis available?" Imagine both "The Mayor" and "The Professor" coaching together on the same bench; makes me happy just thinking about it. Tom Davis would be an excellent coaching mentor for Fred and teach him h
ow to navigate the maze that is the NCAA rulebook. Just a thought.
What a rediculous idea, in my opinion.
