Backing into parking spots

Like the people who absolutely lose their minds if someone in the left lane isn’t doing 90mph….
The left lane thing is simple.... if you're not passing someone, get the F over to the right lane. And absolutely do NOT drive in the left lane with someone else next to you in the right lane going the same speed as you are... and blocking everyone behind you from getting through! Your speed is really irrelevant.... it's all about letting people by that want to go faster than you are.

With trucks it’s a must in some parking lots. There isn’t enough space between the rows to pull in forward in one step. So I’ll often back in to be able to make the turn. Otherwise, I’m pulling in and backing back out to straighten up.

But even with our van if there’s traffic coming both ways and I can’t swing it wide to pull into a spot I’ll back it in.

With practice, it doesn’t take much time to back it in. It’s the people that don’t know what they’re doing that take a long time.

I do it if no one is around. But if you back in and make people wait for you to bumble **** around you’re on the same level as the person that has a convo on speaker in a public space.
Those same people will bumble **** around when they're backing out of a spot, causing you to wait.

Out of all the picking things people do while driving, taking the extra 5 seconds to back into a spot seems low on the list.

What is up with people that feel they HAVE to always back into parking spots? Any of you out there that can explain this? I have nothing against it, just find it odd and interesting.

I will say... I will try to find spots in parking lots where I can just "pull through" the spot and into the the spot opposite of it because it does make it easier to leave... but that doesn't require backing up into it.

We have neighbors on our street that ALWAYS back their vehicles up into their garage even. Have never seen them just pull in normally.
I do it just to p*ss my neighbors off...;)

To add on to this, from a driving mechanics standpoint it is easier to maneuver into a perpendicular parking spot when backing in vs. pulling in. Anyone with a large truck can understand this. But not all parking situations are created equal. And not all operators are created equal, either.;)

I always back in or do a super-sexy pull thru in perpendicular spots. And usually try to park towards the back of the lot where there's more room.

I always park in parking lots so I’m not backing out whether it’s pulling thru a spot that both sides are open or backing in. I drive a truck with surround view overhead and I still do it. Why?
1. Much easier to leave a spot when it’s busy than it is to back out when leaving. Guaranasstee you the Dopey idiots that lose their minds over someone taking an additional 5 seconds of their precious day to back in a spot are the same idiots that will not let you take 5 seconds to back out to leave in front of them. If they don’t like it, they’ll get over it in their own special way.
2. Easier to see you leave especially with higher profile vehicles blocking your view and you can see people so it’s safer IMO.
3. I don’t back into my garage now but did in our previous house with 2 stall garage because the builders build garages so small that that you have to park close to outside wall of garage to park it inside so I backed in so drivers door was in the middle. Made sure to get 3 stall over sized garage in our last purchase

Maybe, bad drivers are bad drivers, but the number of people I see who suck at backing in is 10x the number of people I see who can't back out of a spot.

The difference is that we’ve conditioned ourselves to accept people that suck backing out of spots. If you see a car start to back out, you stop as a pedestrian or if your driving because you know they can’t see you. If those people were to continue driving or walking you’d see constant fender benders and people hit in parking lots. But there’s not the same complaining about having to wait for people to pull out of spots, just for people pulling into them. Just seems like people think their way is the only way and don’t like people who do things differently.

Just come to one of our masses. Nobody, and I mean nobody, is more expert on backing into parking spots than us Catholics. You can hear the tires squealing as soon as communion is over.

(Note: this is harmless self deprecating humor that is not intended to cave this thread)

It got so bad at our parish that the priest mentioned right before his sermon that mass was over until after the final blessing for those that went straight from communion to right out the door.

Backing out of a spot is pretty easy, that’s why people don’t complain about it as much.

It's opposite for me. People that back in usually do it a lot so they are better at it. The number of sucky drivers there are in general is huge, and they usually will pull in because it is seen as "easier"
