You are saying a city that has consistently lost population for 70 years at a rate of something like 200K+ per decade is somehow doing good now because it has seen a couple years of not losing population.

My point has been that there is no other city that I know of that has seen that kind of decline, none.

And the reason it is so bad is because of that decline. The reason there is so much abandoned space is because of this decline. The struggle to maintain these areas and services is because of this decline.

The reason for this decline for 70+ years is not strictly "White Flight". It may be a factor, and may have been a larger factor in some of those decades but not the entire issue. It is not the issue for the last several decades, at least not the main one, as for the last decade+ more Black people have left than White.

You have been saying the problem is the city has too much land for the population, well of course it does, but that is not the reason those spaces are abandoned, those spaces were abandoned causing the extra space. You cant go from 2m to 500K and not have a ton of abandoned space.

But again, give me one city that has seen the kind of decline over the last century that Detroit has. Give me 1 city that has as much abandoned property as Detroit. Again that abandoned property is because of the decline, not what caused the decline.

I get what you are saying it has a decent downtown, but outside of those few blocks it is a cesspool.

St Louis is a dump too, but it has some nicer parts, too, but overall its not good, but you will not find anything close to the amount of abandoned property there (or really anywhere) as you do in Detroit. But as you say Detroit has possibly leveled off, well I hope so, if it doesnt soon it will be a ghost town, losing 200K per decade is not sustainable and would almost certainly have to level off at some point.

I’ll just say this, if you’re bashing the city based on stats I can get how you would come to the conclusion. But as others have pointed out if you have actually been to the city in the last couple years you might think different.

Agree about 70k, you sit in the nose bleeds in the Big House it sucks. Its big but not a great gameday experience.

Big House is the worst stadium I’ve ever watched a game in bar none.

Count me in the Detroit Fan Club. The D.I.A. in and of itself is worth the trip.

Someone should really make a post that can be shared every time someone complains JTS press box is "too small". I'll start it..

1) JTS press box appears smaller since a majority of club seats and suites in JTS are in between concourses. Other stadiums with "bigger" press boxes have these built into the press box.
2) JP has said multiple times JTS press box is more than adequate for Press and TV. Believe me, if our press box was inadequate, you'd be hearing Randy Peterson and Travis Hines openly complain about it. Both of them have no problem airing their other grievances against ISU athletics.
3) When has a recruit ever said they picked a school based on the size of their press box? I rest my case.
No one has said the press box is too small for the press, its all about appearance and how it looks to the outsider as they view the game. If it looks like the press box one would see at a small college or high school, that is the impression you have, whether its true or not does not matter.

No modern stadium can ever have enough suites, that is where the largest amount of revenue is going to be made. Look at Arrowhead in KC, one of the best stadiums in the league, but they always want more suites because that is where the money is being made and therefore looking at building a new stadium.

In todays world appearance is reality, does not matter if its true or not.

I'd be all for removing that lob of concrete, but using the structure to place a 'thin pan style' upper ribbon wrapping most of the top of the upper deck, 100% automated with cameras giving the multidimensional perspective of every play. Since, more and more of the announcement is being done elsewhere, who needs that box in the sky? Pipe the stuff to a luxury suite. There's so much we can do with technology, that just isn't quite there yet. But, with the right imagination and effort, we can do stuff that no one is doing yet.

Right, who gives a **** about the press box? It adds zero income at a huge cost. If the press wants a better box we’ll gladly accept the donation from said press to build it. I’ve never understood the infatuation with press boxes.
Because ours looks like a G5-ass glorified high school press box. I don’t give a sh*t how much money it makes. I don’t care who sits in it. It looks cheesy AF and small-time. That’s why fans are “infatuated”. This isn’t hard.

Press box should probably stretch from 30 to 30 and have a layer of suites. I’m sure this will happen eventually. We just need to get through cytown and reassess our needs. A project like cytown is a huge gamble that we need to be successful.

70K plus, So, basically all of the SEC and B1G? Most of the NFL?

Personally I think 70K is about optimal.

Its more about stadium design than size when you get that big.

Hell Baylor is in Texas, High school stadiums hold 20K there, but Baylor cant fill a football or basketball facility, of decent size, even being an easy drive from the DFW metro.
I find it hard to fault Baylor on their Baby gym Texas downsized also other than Houston and TT the texas schools don't care about BB. I know BYU cares and AZ time will tell if the rest do. If nothing else it could make for some nice road trips.

This. No fans in the Big Ten or SEC understands how rough it was to go through 2010, 2011, 2021 as an ISU fan (or K-State, Texas Tech, Okie State fans) when it was looking like the Big 12 was folding and the outlook was horrible each time. Somehow the Big 12 survived for various reasons.
And yet they are always dismissive of their conference's role in the whole thing. It's almost like they're lying.

You stated the Detroit could hold the square milage of SF, SD and Manhattan combined, and its roughly the same size a little bigger than SF.
You do realize the info you linked ranks an area of economic influence. So a city like New York includes NJ, CT and Long Island in the rankings you show. Sure it's accurate, but most people would evaluate NY City area by the 5 Burroughs.

Similarly, Waukee is part of DSM economic area- but I think most people would only include DSM city limits in calculating sq. area.

But when your right, your right!;)

The info included those areas in Detroit also.

Comparing cities like Detroit to cities like Chicago, Dallas metroplex and Houston are no comparison.
I'm not the one saying that the Detroit metro is larger than SF, SD and Manhattan combined when its not and that is a major reason for its decline. Its a crap hole city that sits in the rust belt that has been destroyed by businesses moving overseas or to Mexico and taking good paying jobs with them. It has nothing to do with the physical size of the city itself.

I think if someone approached Jamie Pollard with $50 million to donate for a new press box project, he would likely proceed with the project.

I'd hope JP would convince the person to use the money for something more than a cosmetic improvement to the stadium.

Hot tubs would have bigger bang for the buck than a ******* press box.

And St Louis still sucks more than Detroit. Baba Booey

Thank God you aren’t our AD. ISU is not in a financial position to be adding fluff. It has to make money, be a necessity or paid for by donors. This isn’t hard.

The only way a new press box happens is if we get so many people looking to pour money into luxury suites ISU only has the option to expand up. Then a new press box could be incorporated into suites on top of the stadium.
