No it doesn't look good to me that he was at Indiana for a couple years then left/fired and took a lesser job. Isn't everybody else tired of guys that either proved they can't make it or guys that have a lack of experience. I'm excited for what coach campbell has shown us so far. But I would like to see better results and if we keep repeating ourselves how do we actually ever get our football team to the level where we would like to finally have it at. I just don't want to be four years down the road and we are disappointed again that we had high hopes for a good head coach and yet we are still not improving on where we are at today.

Most of us super knowledgeable fans thought Tom Herman couldn't make it and now he's the next best thing. I'll put my faith in the professionals and give them the flexibility to hire who THEY want to hitch their wagon to rather than put any credence into chat board coaching experts.

Honestly, we are not expert coaches and we do not know how he coaches hints why we have no say over who gets to coach. At this point in time, I'm willing to shake things up. I think Matt can do that and hope he will bring a new winning culture to Iowa State. So just sit back and enjoy the ride. It can't get much worse than the past 3 years. IMO

Respectfully, it is similar to Chizik. Doesn't mean the outcome will be the same.
Looks like I could have worded that better. Or more completely.

similar does not mean the same. Though in hindsight it can sometimes read like it means the same.

On the one side -- anyone who thinks this is just like Chizik is certainly foolish. Many others have pointed out the significant differences between the new coaching staff and Chizik's bad-experiment-hiring-his-unproven-buddies-as-coordinators.

On the other side -- Chizik hired unqualified friends for coordinator positions and it infamously failed. No one should be berated for being reminded of how Chizik built his staff with his buddies when they see Matt Campbell hiring -- and promoting (sometimes significantly) -- his current professional colleagues.

Not the same. But certainly -- even if only in one small insignificant but highly memorable way -- similar.

So were we dumb for hiring Ayeni as RB's coach because he was a RB's coach at Toledo and had no Big12 or even P5 experience? What about Illinios hiring Golesh from Toledo? Seems like Toledo had some good coaches and it seems to translate over. Also says these coaches who left Toledo have faith in his ability wanting to be with him again.

No. Completely missing the point. The concern is simply that the progression is typically:

Success as mid major position coach ===> Get job as position coach at P5 (Ayeni) ===> have success ===> Get job as P5 coordinator

or:

Success as mid major position coach ===> Get job as mid major coordinator===> have success ===> Get job as P5 coordinator.

The middle part is what is missing.

Did not see the read the whole thread but I can see a tremendous value in bringing an already assembled team. Everyone is already on the same page and knows what to expect out of each other thus eliminating surprises (and bad hires). Bringing in a new OC or DC form the outside and when the head coach and most assistants have worked together sound like a much worse plan. Much higher chance of internal problems.

Oddly silent on the DC front. With Toledo's bowl game tonight, I wonder if we hear something tomorrow. Would be nice to have the full staff in place. DC is the one huge hole remaining.

I anticipate we know more in the next day or two. Rasheed should be formally introduced as the DL coach not too long after Toledo's bowl game. Probably somewhat telling if they haven't worked out a deal with Heacock by then.

Can everyone please stop comparing this to Chizik! This is nothing like Chizik. These guys were winning and working together. Chizik brought together guys that sucked and were all friends. They weren't working together for 7 years before Iowa State. This is a staff of winners. This is just like what Jerry Kill did at Minnesota he brought his MAC staff to Minnesota and look where it lead them. Back to back 8 win season sounds nice to me. This isn't like Chizik it's like Jerry kill!

Sorry we dont have the luxury of playing in the Big 10...This is the Big 12 and i wish would gotten at least one coach that has coached in the Big 12 and really knows the landscape Ayeni hasnt been here long enough in my opinion sounds like another learning on the job experience to me.

Campbell hired Heacock to improve the defense. It happened, especially the second year and the top 25 ranking resulted. Heacock was not one of Campbell's "buddies" as some of the less knowledgeable posters refer to the Toledo coaches coming with him. Campbell saw a need and found a coach who could make it happen. You guys should pray that Heacock comes also in my opinion based on what I observed the last two years.

Learning on the job? Campbell has been an HC for, what, 3 or 4 seasons prior to this?

In fairness, there's always learning involved with being in a new place with a new culture and a new system. I'm going to guess that Campbell is pretty well prepared for what's going on. He certainly has the moxy that makes people believe that he's ready -- that's step 1 completed already!

There are no special defenses at the B12 level. No secret formations, nor hand-shakes or decoder rings. It's simply recruiting quality players to play within the system and the fact the CMC is coming with a nearly fully formed TEAM of coaches that all use the same language, understand and teach the same schemes and techniques, that understand their exact role on the staff and have each others' backs (it seems) is a huge plus.

But we'll hold out hope for you that is sucks so you won't have to feel so alone.

We need a coach who "knows the Big XII landscape". What does that even mean? Maybe we should bring Mangino back. He coached at K-state, OU and Kansas. How did that work out?

Problem with your analogy is tho is the b12. Anyone can win 8 games in the b10.

One concern I DO have from the Western Michigan game is the dirty play by one of Toledo's players: got tossed for targeting vs. a defenseless player behind the play. Can't speak for anything else, but that was a lack of discipline.

That wide receiver was undisciplined and actually held himself together better than I ever thought he would. Of course his true colors came out the final regular season game of his senior year. He will not be missed and there are very good replacements ready to go.

On another note. Heard Heacock has hs age daughters and he is concerned about moving again.

Maybe there IS something to this. Honestly, do we want an assistant coach who spends time scheming for all 11 other conference schools? Seriously I see a HUGE upside to hiring someone who understands the B12 only has 10 teams.

Huge red flag to be sure! JP didn't do his background work.
