Living out of state, I don't hear a lot away from this board, but the little bit of chatter I'm hearing from the few Hawkeye fans I know, is reminding me of the 2005 game. Then it was all Drew Tate and how ISU couldn't stop him. This year it's all about Cade and how ISU can't stop him.

There are certainly a lot of reasons ISU could lose this game, but I don't think Cade torching our Defense is going to be one of them.

Difference being that 2005 Iowa team was supposed to win *another* national title and when it came down to it, they really weren't very good and Tate was decent but not great when the dust settled.

Not surprising from those fans though.

Iowa has two decades of track record of being the exact same team every year.. Iowa State does not...

Campbell's record in 1-score games is horrific and we ALL want it to change, but I need to see MASSIVE improvement on the offensive line before I am confident heading into a CyHawk game.

Going heavy with TE's plays into Iowa strengths. I would rather go 4-5 wide like Purdue did and make their LB's cover WR's in space. Problem there is our WR room may be the weakest on the roster..

I just need to see it on Saturday to change my mind from 4 wins this season
Two decades is irrelevant to this year’s teams.

They have two decades’ track records of strong OL’s as well. How’s that working out?

Alright - I've gotta unload my thoughts:

1) listening to that Iowa Everywhere "Legends & Listeners" smh... Typical arrogant Squawkeyes. I loved the line about how they were "disappointed" in UNI's performance. Then followed it up with moaning about how they've gotta get their QB ready for their gauntlet of a B10 season ahead - unghh Michigan State, sooo brutal. I feel so bad form them that they have such a hard, tough schedule /s. I love how much they're underselling the Iowa State defensive line and the running backs. That should be a fun surprise for them tomorrow.

2) I caution everyone that is thinking our special teams is all of a sudden 100% better. We had one kick off return that was almost botched. I think it was Purchase who signaled that he was going to let it go behind him and then changed his mind and returned it. Nearly a big mistake there. Obviously everyone saw the missed extra point that was part bad snap, part bad hold. Kickoffs were also better, but I'm not expecting to be able to get a touchback every time it's needed. Without a doubt it WAS much better against UNI, but the opportunity to lose the game on special teams still definitely exists. Woody and Newell go into this on their pod - the plan was good, but there was some evidence that they need more reps to get things tightened up.

3) This game is going to come down to Rocco Becht vs. Cade McNamara. One is inexperienced, the other is injured. One aspect I really like is that despite McNamara having experience, he's never played against our style of defense. That will help level things out. On the flip side, we have to have receivers show up and make plays.

4) back to Chad and Doc's serenade to Iowa - They thought Iowa State would not be able to run the ball on Iowa. I'm not saying it'll be easy, but I think we'll be able to run it well enough, probably better than they will be able to run against us. I like Norton's ability to be violent (reminds me a bit of D. Montgomery) and Sama's speed to get to the edge.

5) **** Iowa

Was on an intra-work conference call with about 40 people this AM and somebody said something about the game and I blurted out **** Iowa, not realizing I wasn't on mute. I'm waiting for my HR invite.
You Sir are a GOD ! That’s awesome

We were able to run it on their defense last season, and that was with a worse OL and against a better front 7. Norton and Sama need to get the 7 yards if it's there instead of dancing and getting 2. Keeping Rocco in 2nd and 3rd and manageable is so big.

Does it seem to anyone else that this people are paying less attention to this year's game than ever before? Granted, I don't live in Iowa so maybe there's more in person interest. But the internet is pretty much crickets. And, what's more, its a nationally televised game, middle of the day game.

Nobody in Iowa is talking about anything else.

I always try to not take much away from week one. I remember back in '09 watching Iowa struggle to run the ball against UNI week 1(2.8 YPC) then in week two run for 191 yards on us. Obviously a different time though.
Did anyone watch this game to analyse? Like did UDU sell out to stop the run, thus enticing Iowa to pass? Which they can now do apparently, as opposed to with Petras. Or was USU base and Iowa just couldn't run block?

Im nervous. No clue what to expect. I feel cautiously optimistic. But then again, I felt that way in 2019 and 2021 so who knows

I feel cautiously optimistic as well, but I distinctly remember having a bad feeling before the 2021 game that I couldn't shake.

Hopefully my gut is right again.

Neither team is world beaters. This is all going to come down to which team screws up less. The Chiefs proved that last night. Whichever team players cleaner, will win.

Mix of both IMO. There were several times where they were close to breaking a big play but just missed a block. Overall their line is better than last year but run blocking is a pretty big work in progress.

I agree. I think their OL did better with pass blocking than run blocking. If we bring pressure and force Cade out of the pocket, he's going to throw the ball away a lot. However, he's seasoned and has good poise while in the pocket so giving him time could be bad.

Iowa's OL? My take is completely different, pass blocking was pretty solid, run blocking was bad. We averaged less than 3 ypc on the day.

I can see Sama hitting some seams this week.

Yeah, I totally goofed with that sentence. I'll fix it. The rest of it was to support the better pass blocking giving Cade more time.
