I think it will be a different game if we can lay him out a couple times in the first quarter.

We utilized more play action, actually snapped it under center (notably on the sneak) and had improved protection schemes and splits at the line.

But yes, there were still too many Manning moments. We have never had or shown we've had the personnel to run the WR screens with any sort of consistency yet we still run them. It's usually a ceded down to the opposition and we are fortunate not go backwards on half of those plays. Please get that out of the play book.

Even more important is the receiver routes and depths, ie the route trees of the offense. For years we have done a terrible job at utilizing and making defenses defend the entire field. We constantly have receivers running mid routes at teh same depth making us easy to defend. What's more as we have rarely shown the ability to protect for the type of routes we run. Our QBs are under duress in 2-3 seconds and they have nowhere to throw the ball.

We have a young QB and I'd like to see more utilizing of the middle of the field...some quick slants and crosses, as well as more misdirection. I really liked the deep shots we took last game and REALLY liked Bechts ability to see the field and throw on the run. Let's create some time with some ingenuity and give him some easy throws that get VERTICAL yards.

There were encouraging signs but it wasn't perfect. We will need more diversity and creativity against Iowa.

You make a lot of sense but abandoning the wide screens and forcing the opponent to cover the entire field are opposite arguments. I could see throwing the sideline screens less often but if you throw it out of the playbook you allow the corners to cheat deeper and don't ever make them pay for it.

I agree that they need to attack at every place on the field to stretch the D including throwing deep balls and mid crossing routes but you can't abandon any part of the field and really be stretching the defense.

Those short screens really act as an extension of the running game too. Sure, you don't break very many, but a lot of them will get 4-5 yards, which is as good as a decent run.

Two unranked teams in a game that's a spectactle for all of the wrong reasons. I'm slightly annoyed that it doesn't get any real discussion nationally and has turned into something everyone mocks.

The last 3-4 years, this game was a national showcase game, but our teams have driven everyone away.

I told someone at work in Madison that it was the Cy-Hawk game. blank stare haha. Most people in Madison have heard of Hawkeyes and never heard of the cyclones. If you say "Iowa State, 50/50 chance they say "oh, the Hawkeyes?"

I've got to be honest, with the reduced tailgate time, mess at the gates and the announcement of this turning into a political rally, I considered selling my tickets and parking pass. I'm leaving Illinois at 2:30 in the morning to get to the game, so a day filled with hassles, isn't all that appealing to me. I wonder how many felt like me and ultimately decided it's easier to tailgate at home and watch it on TV.

I've met plenty of people that know about ISU and think Ames is a nice place etc. but most are clueless about hardly any teams outside of the B1G region and (understandably) have no idea about Cyhawk.
