Hey Tolfbfan. What type of a defensive scheme did you guys run the last couple of years? Did he have the players to do what he wanted? What should we expect? Thanks for all the insight you've provided into MC and staff!

I saw more variety this year [yr 2] than I did the first 3 years together. Nickel and dime packages. Cover 0 and man with safeties over top. Man one side, zone other. Toledo might of had one of the best front 4's. I would be shocked if the nose and tackle are not drafted or sign when graduated. Saw twist stunts. Both lb, safety, and corner blitzes. Lb's were 5'11'' to 6 foot or so and approx 230 lb. Before he came on board, the corners gave 10-12 yards and teams ate us alive. The last couple years Toledo has recruited bigger dbs, mostly over 6 ft.

Hope this helps. Give this guy a chance. He came into Toledo and fixed a mess. Very demanding guy who gets intense on game day from what I hear.

Have not coached a second of defense. So, my terminology may be off. I'm offensive all the way.

Even if there were "slightly better" guys out there, it would have taken significantly more $ to get them to Ames, plus rest of the staff and Heacock will be on the same page Day 1. As other posters have said, he was our #1 target and Toledo's defense has made large strides since his arrival. You have to let a new HC that has succeeded elsewhere pick HIS guys the first few years. I say that realistically, this was best case scenario and I'm excited to see what Heacock chooses to do with his new personnel. Welcome to the B12 Coach, where holding teams 28 will get you a BIG raise

Thanks, but what will I hang my hat on when you guys form your own opinion based on a year. I may get run off site if he don't win 5 or more. LOL.
Promise you won't get run off the site, you don't seem to have thin skin lol. Stay for the banter, self deprecating humor and kool aid drinking

Thank you again for your insight. It's great to have someone with an inside track into this coaching staff willing to tell us about their experience. I'm really excited about the people we have hired and feel they might just be the team to turn this program around. I'm grateful to Toledo and hope that Candle can pick right back up where Campbell left off. The way he already has a DC makes me think he can. It's turned me into a Toledo fan already, I was rooting for you in the bowl against Temple. That was a heck of a win. Go Rockets!

We could start a connection. Campbell wins and moves to a top ten program. Candle comes to ISU, wins and moves to top ten program. You never know!

Sign me up. Ohio is a hotbed of coaches. Plus there already seems to be an Iowa State connection... Tom Herman, Chris Ash, not to mention Earle Bruce. If Ohio wants to funnel championships through Iowa State, I'm all on board.

If he's doing some of the things Don Brown is doing with coverages and schemes, that would be awesome. He was running different calls on different sides of the field which I think is the future of defensive football as it causes confusion. That's the system that gave BC the number 1 defense in the nation this year with an awful offense and I'm not sure people realize how difficult that is to do between guys being on the field all the time and then giving up the ghost when your offense doesn't help you. I really hope that's what he wants to do and I hope he can do it.

We've all been begging for a pressure defense, that's what Heacock brought to Toledo with vast improvement in two years there. He coached for Schembechler and Jim Tressel. You aren't taking a flyer on a guy here, and most of his defensive assistants will be here as well. This is a good hire for ISU.

Welcome Coach Heacock - glad to have you aboard. As you watched the bowl season you can see that the Big 12 has 2 contenders (TCU and BU) and rest pretenders. OU wants to be in SEC as Bob and boys can't compete anymore and Texas is just gone. the vampire is milking the blood out of admin to let son run KSU into ground and ol dude bro at TTU will implode shortly. KU is a mess, I'm a man OSU has no heart and WVU plays better out of conference. So - welcome to Dysfunction 10!

How do you know that. Every coach that has been hired has everyone excited because they are new.
