Departures?

That said, it does look like there is a new sheriff in town. Several personnel changes are in progress. Conditioning requirements may be a driver; attitude required may be a driver; wanting to win more may be a driver.

Agreed... and a new sheriff is exactly what was needed. I get it. Campbell is coming in and installing his expectations. That's awesome. If you look at our basketball program for comparison that can be a challenge during a coaching transition. Although Prohm was coming into an entirely different situation. It's much more difficult to install your system when the previous system was very successful. It's much easier to sell your system when the previous system was really bad. Campbell has the luxury of being able to sell the fact that change is a must. Clearly players are either going to buy into that or they are going to leave.

I just struggle with the whole mentality that so many of us fans appear to be taking the "Good. If they aren't on board get rid of them!" approach. That's pretty harsh considering these are the same guys many of us were trying to talk up last offseason. I don't see why being a fan means you need to automatically be unrealistic. It's Campbell's way or the highway! Look, we don't know if Campbell's way is going to work yet so let's just slow down a little bit. Some of these players from Rhoads tenure could play a huge role in this transition and the fact some are so quick to run them off is kind of unnerving to me. Campbell needs to install his system, but he doesn't necessarily need to do it in a way that's going to run players off. I hope that's not what is happening.

Shall we shift the discussion over to the thread with the more general title?

Departures so far include:

Jake Rhoads
Grant Rohach
Joshua Thomas
D'Vario Montgomery

Who else?

Which thread has the more general title?

I posted in this thread with the more general title, rather than the specific one on Thomas and Montgomery that was starting to talk about other departures and the situation in general.

Of the list of players who have left so far, tell me who was irreplaceable.

I ran into Levi Peters saturday night at a concert in Des Moines and asked him about the new staff and he had some interesting things to say. Told me that 16 guys have quit the team because they werent tough enough to deal with what CMC was implementing. Also told me to be ready for the season, its going to be a good one. Thats the 2nd time i have chatted with Levi, always nice and willing to talk anything cyclones.

I mean what defines irreplaceable? I'm not sure I'm qualified to answer that because I don't know what's going on inside the locker room. Burton, Montgomery, and JT all would have played and possibly started (JT if Warren gets banged up). Any player that could contribute is important if you ask me. We aren't talking about Bama type depth here. We're talking about a perennial B12 losing program that needs all hands on deck in order to right the ship. Don't kid yourself.

Since everything has already been said two or three times I thought I'd add a graphic.

I don't disagree with what you are saying. However, Burton couldn't get and stay healthy. Montgomery regressed last year, and we don't really know what Thomas will turn out to be like. He's the one guy I would have liked to see stay, but we have 2 good guys coming in as freshmen and Warren will be on the field 90% of the plays anyway.

I'm looking at the long term though. I don't expect much in 2016. So those guys aren't big losses.

With the bolded in mind... I agree. Getting some younger guys experience next year will help the team long term. Losing 15+ guys is a pretty big punch to the gut in the old depth department though. Even if none of them are great players. We've seen what OL injuries can do to a team. The margin for error is pretty thin and with all of these losses it's going to be even worse. Basically seems to me like we're sacrificing next season for the good of the future, and honestly that's okay. Campbell isn't going to be judged off his first season. He'll have 3-5 years to prove his worth.

Is it really a surprise that we are seeing roster movement quickly with this staff? However, I don't think I would call it hasty. These guys seem to do their homework and are prepared to take action.

Let's say the rumors are true that 20 or so players are leaving the program. With an 85 scholly limit I'd say losing 20 players is absolutely "hasty". That's almost 1/4 of the team man.

Some walk-on departures:

Jack McAllister - OL - RS Sophomore
Matt Swoyer - DB - RS Senior
Ma'Kayle Phillips - DL - RS Junior
Holden Kramer - P - RS Junior
Adam Bradley - DL - RS Junior

With the players that are arriving in August included, they have 95 athletes to fill 85 spots. So 10 more need to leave or be grayshirted unless some "initial counters" voodoo is applied.

I haven't heard of 20+ players leaving. Maybe 10, and that includes DM, JT, Jake Rhoads, and maybe a couple other walk ons. The 3 I listed are the only one's that played substantial amounts I believe.

Edit: And Daniel Burton, and all the others that have already been made public.

The WR coach, Gasser??? Never mentioned him with the other WRs returning. That really sucks if true.

But everyone here seemed to know several weeks ago that DVM was leaving. Hell, last season he had to get "reprogrammed" to buy in, lose weight and be a part of the team. Since he was dismissed maybe he was just too high maintenance for the new staff.
