I've never heard anyone say why we aren't interested in him. At the Iowa State camp, they gave him the final play of one-on-ones on the Jack Trice Stadium field under the lights. And he made a perfect cut and catch on a sweet TD toss from Coach Hofher.

I didn't know who he was before the camp, but he made me take notice. He ran the drills like he was on a rail. Looked like he was in great condition and never got tired, probably from being on the Iowa City West swim team with all the cardio and endurance work they do in practice.

Separation speed I believe is what Halsted said was the concern from the staff but that was a long time ago. They very well could have evaluated him poorly or maybe they're not what he's not what they're looking for at that position. All I know is Iowa had nothing to do with the choice to offer or not and I don't think he's going to Iowa anyways.

They passed on that JUCO DE from Iowa too that appears to be a hot commodity after evaluating him in person

I understand what you're saying. But honesty AA and Steele were not built much different so I'm still having a hard time understanding what the differences to you are?

One had superior leadership qualities and football IQ than the other, along with consistency. Things a "prototypical QB" would possess.

Iowa also didn't offer Sean Foster because they didn't like his footwork. I hope Foster becomes a bad mofo and has his best games against Iowa.

is Lombardi going as a QB?
Yes he is. He said something to the effects that recently Sparty has sent some QBs to the NFL,so he believes he stands a better chance of being drafted if he played at MSU as compared to other schools that offered him. Can't really blame the kid, I wished he was a cyclone though.

Our staff decided not to offer Martin after he camped and it had nothing to do with Iowa
Its odd for sure. Michigan State, Michigan and Notre Dame recruit WRs very well and all have a recent history of having very good players at that position.

This is pure speculation, but I get the sense that Martin informed the staff early (maybe at the camp) that he wouldn't be going to Iowa State. Iowa State says they didn't offer and nobody gets disrespected.

Makes sense to me. It's hard to believe that the blue bloods were after him and Campbell's staff decided they can do better. It seems more likely that Martin's camp made it clear that he isn't coming to Ames, ISU backed off, and nobody's time got wasted.

I'm guessing this is likely the case

Devon comes from an awesome family too. I consider his late grandfather to be one of the biggest influences in my life and Devon's parents, grandmother, and uncle don't fall far from that tree either.

Kid is really smart and has a great attitude no matter what he's faced with. He'll do well in Ames.

That makes no sense whatsoever. If he wasn't interested in coming to Iowa State at all, why bother coming to the camp?

I don't know...do the kids get any free stuff out of those camps or is that a NCAA violation? Maybe he went for the free gear, maybe he went because a couple of friends/fellow recruits were going, maybe he went just for the hell of it it because 18 year old kids have been known to do things that make no sense every now and then.

Camps aren't just for exposure. Maybe he wanted instruction from college coaches or to compete against other top-level talent in the state. If I was a potential D-1 recruit, I'd hit both Iowa and Iowa State camps if given the opportunity.

Here is my take on it. Martin came to the camp hoping to do well and get an offer, but it was a bit early (our first camp, not the third one where most of the recruits were going to be). I think it was also before the Nike 11 which he blew up. And then the offers started coming in. Even EIU was lagging behind. And by that time, he had offers that were better than ours. I would call this one a semi-whiff. I think we hoped we might be able to sneak in on Martin later, but he didn't stay a secret and we lost him. Although I would still like to see us make an offer to him.

I didn't even know who Martin was when I started watching the camp, but he was one of the few guys who stood out. Great conditioning, great in drills, great in 1 on 1s, and not that it matters, but he is a good-looking guy too.
