I'd like to go after someone who has a proven track record as a head coach like Craig Smith from Utah State.

I would agree with you -- I would take a long and hard look at Smith and want him on the interview list.

He's like TJ in the sense he's a Midwest guy who happened to end up in the MWC. TJ had his long tenures in Ames and with Washington, but Smith was a high-major assistant for Tim Miles at Nebraska, too.

Smith has a longer (and more successful, for that matter) tenure as a head man himself, though.

I am glad I do not have to make this call, but if we're going the mid-major route, then TJ, Smith, an DeVries all have a case, though in different ways from each other. I'd hope we make a good decision here.

The real question is whether Grill comes back to Iowa State if TJ is the head coach. That'd be unreal.

Yeah, It's like what level of cheating is he doing. I mean is he Auburn and KU cheating? No. He is making a few extra phone calls cheating. I can deal with that.
Amen. Cheating is grade fixing, bogus classes, extra benefits, etc. Sampson's were texts and phone calls. Big deal.

This sounds like a personal story.

LOL.....nah..bad attempt at a joke. Just feel the TJ of five years ago many wanted hasn't really performed the last couple years and may be a hard sell now to many (give the 'what have you done for me lately' mentality of many)

Smith has won a ton of games with at least 4-5 (counting this year) great seasons coaching at low levels.
In the bigger leagues, he was part of a moderately successful Tim Miles run at Colorado State, and then with him for an NCAA tournament year at Nebraska.

I'm not sure if we want to take a deeper dive looking into Smith. I don't see much indicating high levels of success at the high levels.

From what I could tell, TJ's buyout would be around $5 million.

Hoiberg's would be around $8 million.

Sampson would be $12 million.

Not sure about DeVries (as Drake is a private school, obviously), but it would probably be the lowest of these. He probably makes around $500,000 per year, meaning his buyout is probably no more than $2 million.

Craig Smith makes around $550,000 per year, too, so he's in the same realm as DeVries.

How about going the OU, TCU, WV, and TCU route; find an experienced coach who get the program turned around. Maybe one who has plateaued at another school and would welcome the challenge of ISU. I would be happy to get to being respectable in a couple years and then to the NCAA tournament.

Well we already used up our alumni coach card so the TCU WV route isn’t going to work here this time. Unless there is some other ISU alum in the top ranks of P5 HC’s I’m missing.

I don't follow basketball coaching carousels much. But since you asked....

TJ would be like Paul Rhoads. A guy who wouldn't leave us. Might have a bit of success, but I don't see where he's slam dunk "special" given SDSU and UNLV.

Devries feels like McDermott. Northern Iowa, Creighton, & Drake doesn't really scream experience of coaching young men who have NBA thoughts on their mind.

I don't know who else is out there, but I say add these 2 to the list & shoot higher.

It’s like people haven’t followed ISU basketball coaching changes forever.

So who would be a viable "non-budget" candidate for JP to pursue that would check more boxes than TJO?

And please, no Sampson (he has got a family business there with son & daughter both on staff and Tilman Fertitta's resources), Beilien (will be 68 this month) and Altman (age and buyout obstacles).
I personally wouldn’t like Sampson, Beilien or Altman. All because of age and/or culture fit for Ames.
Okay, we're in agreement on Sampson, Beilien and Altman.

Who would be a viable "non-budget" candidate in your opinion?
