Ive shared my various thoughts and reasons in the premium forum thread today. There are basically 2 options of direction for a search and unfortunately I think JP will only go down the budget path.
So who would be a viable "non-budget" candidate for JP to pursue that would check more boxes than TJO?

And please, no Sampson (he has got a family business there with son & daughter both on staff and Tilman Fertitta's resources), Beilien (will be 68 this month) and Altman (age and buyout obstacles).

I get why people like TJ, but I also think that a lot of people who think he’s the better choice are letting emotions get involved a bit too much. Prohm is the perfect example of why that shouldn’t happen. We all know Prohm is a great guy, but he flat out can’t coach. I see the TJ connection as something similar, a guy people like who has ties to the program. While TJ would likely be a superior coach compared to Prohm, I want a proven winner, and that is clearly DeVries.

The coach we have now won in the Ohio Valley. The two we are talking about, one has won in the Summit, and the other in the MVC. So they are/were all successful at those schools. Now, are any of those conference head over heels better than the other?

Matta won 5 conference championships at Ohio State. He didn't grossly underperform.

I do agree that the longer he remains out of coaching, the more questions there are regarding his ability to be successful at a program like ISU's. If he ever does get back into coaching, my guess is that it will be a Florida program (where he has a residence) like Miami FL. I highly doubt he would have interest in ISU.

Go back and look at his recruiting classes and where the rest of his league was at the time. He underperformed based on those two things.

TJ has been terrible at UNLV. He shouldn't even be considered.

Top UNLV guys by minutes last year...

Top ones this year...

So he's retained...

Bryce Hamilton
Cheikh Mbacke Diong

...and that is it, from my scan of it. Just look at the list of names. There are not many repeats.

CW has stressed it a few times that TJ cleaned house after last season in order to start over, rebuild the culture, and have his guys. You should view UNLV this year as his de facto first year, not really a second year.

Heck, he's even getting good minutes out of Caleb Grill.

Your reservations about TJ are reasonable, and I share many of them. But I thought I would add this.

DeVries and TJO both had successful and extensive P6 coaching experience. Prohm had zero.

I personally wouldn’t like Sampson, Beilien or Altman. All because of age and/or culture fit for Ames.

He only underperformed at the end of his Ohio St tenure when the health issues caught up to him and triggered his departure.

I'd take Beilein for a short rebuild to get back to prominence and offer him the choice to groom a successor...then do whatever the hell we want after regardless.

How many would be against Kelvin Sampson? He is killing it. Would he want back in the big 12?
If the other options are lolTJ and lolDevries then its Sampson by a landslide. I just think Sampson is too old and soon recruits will get nervous about committing due to his age. I think we should shoot for a coach with the potential to be here 10-20 years.

I'd like to go after someone who has a proven track record as a head coach like Craig Smith from Utah State.

I would offer to Kelvin Sampson, Worst case scenario he says no. Best case he says no and we offered to an African American if we hire a coach who is white. I mean I would love Sampson. He is getting old but he could get us back on track for 4 years and then retire.

Ummmm.......he’s not African American. He’s Native American.

we’d be getting good minutes out of grill if he was still here too!
