The offense seems more patient this year. Willing to work the ball around more rather than trying to force it.

Please provide credentials before saying what needs to be addressed. Start with name of college, tenure and record.

Until then I will trust Prohm.

Yikes man. I don't think he was out of line with his observations. Relax. Enjoy the season!

Things I think we need to address (I played freshmen ball in highschool so obviously qualified)

-Free throw shooting. I feel it's mental, but that's going to cost us a game if we don't fix it.
-Starting games slow. Yes it was only 7-2, but we play a better team and it'll be 18-1 or something like it was at Baylor last year.
-Boxing out. We were great at flying to the ball for rebounds, but someone has to get a body on their bigs.

All of these are nitpicky and correctable so not much to complain about. Go Cyclones!

I would say a vast majority of coaches yell out instructions from the bench. Hoiberg was one of those seldom few we didn't. We are not used to that. To be honest, I like Prohms animated demeanor on the bench. Stark contrast from Hoiberg. One of Hoiberg's downfalls I think was he wasn't that vocal, or animated on the bench.

I'm still not using to hearing a coach yelling out instructions from the bench like Prohm does. Not that it's a bad thing, I love that he's constantly coaching the guys, but just a complete 180 from Hoibergs calm demeanor.

I know... It's three games in, but this was weird. On the offensive end, Prohm was yelling CONSTANTLY. That's more yelling than a typical HS coach. So, I'm actually concerned about this. Didn't they have sets clearly defined before the game with some simple signals? If Chattanooga switched their defense up from previous games, how about time-outs or half-time?

I'm probably over-reacting, but I hope they don't tune him out. For god's sake, Cooke was the only player on the floor who hasn't been playing with this group. Maybe someone can enlighten my weak basketball mind on this?

edited to note ... I assumed they had been working on Prohm's sets all summer / fall. Another positive, George played 27 extremely efficient minutes. At one point it seemed like he hadn't done much and he had 17 of those points. I kind of take him for granted.

I too was at the game last night for the first time in the Prohm area and these were my takaways.....

1. Defense!! I love it when we play good defense. Probably my biggest frustration with Hoiberg ball(and not a big one at that). Our interior defense needs a bit of work yet, but me thinks that had more to do with McKay and Nader getting some fouls that caused us to back off there a bit with our lack of big men to sub. But, loved watching some defense.

2. Count me as one that loved hearing Prohm coaching the players and me being able to hear it up in my section 242 seats. Not sure why that impressed me, but it did....

3. Nader...... Count me in as also being impressed by his play this year so far. I really think he could be the difference maker in our run in the tourney next March. If he can can come in and be the force Niang and McKay are down low, I like our chances.

4. Matt Thomas seems as confident as ever and really played well. I hope he continues to light it up this year.

5. McKay with 17 rebounds was impressive...... he would have had more to if he wasn't cramping up at the end.

This year gonna be fun fellas........
It's weird I couldn't hear Prohm in first game. So the students being gone was probably the reason we could hear him.

11 turnovers. Almost all of those from the middle pass in the press - 3 from McKay, 3 from Niang, 2 from Nader..the press is tough when the big guy is the middle pass. I thought they did a good job of pressing us tonight..and I think we will see it more. And yes, OU presses..at OU last year we had 14 turnovers 8 combined from Mckay, Niang and Hogue. Even at Hilton last year we had 16 turnovers, 10 from Niang, Hogue and Nader. All middle guys in the press.

I realize that we had games with turnovers but I honestly don't remember anyone having success pressing us last year.

Arkansas and WVU tried and failed.

KU and OU may have worked it in occasionally, but I don't remember it being much, and btw we went 4-2 against those them.

I feel like K-State may have pressed us a couple of times in Manhattan when they came from behind at the end.

We rarely have more than 1 player on the court that can't handle the ball, so the press is the least of my worries.

The Hogue piece is missing from this team, great rebounder who can consistently get garbage points off boards out to the occasional three pointer. Maybe Burton will fill that role at the end of December. Otherwise this team has everything it needs.

McKay is potentially going to be among the nation's leading rebounders. Comparing him on the boards now and last December is night and day. Not saying a second guy to kill it on the boards would hurt, but he's gonna get a ton of boards.

My one take away was we haven't seen, or needed yet, Georges to take over a game like we know he can with his whirley dervish stuff.

You realize we won by 20 against a pretty good team, right?

It was awesome being in Hilton tonight for my first game of the Prohm era. I noticed a few things that I enjoyed and some things that will probably need to be addressed at some point. The good: Many set plays where Monte was clearly the go to When Naz was hot, there were some new wrinkles in our offense to get him the ball quicker than running several ball screens, then the pass to Naz. Gets the defense on their heels Matt Thomas (although a few missed shots) looked confident and Prohm is using him well Cooke's defense is very good - will be critical down the stretch Nader is a completely different player from last year. I feel like he will be key for us when/if McKay gets in foul trouble Things that need to be addressed (imo): There is a lot more back and forth between players than in the Hoiberg era. This could be good, or bad. Many times Niang getting on Naz, McKay getting frustrated and whining about little things. I feel like the dynamic among the players might be a little bit different this year. The inbounds set plays seem to be rough at this point. Maybe its early and its to be expected, but Prohm yelling out where the players need to be, like they dont know where they should be. Hoiberg era seemed a lot smoother on the inbound plays. I think over time, it will get better it just seemed sloppy. Clearly, more positives than negatives. I loved how we got challenged in the press tonight. We will see the press from Oklahoma for sure, and probably KU..its great to see that we were challenged early. Love the Prohm era so far, fun to watch these guys doing what they do. Just a few observations from tonight. Go State!!
I doubt you will see any press coverage from KU at all. Self hates to press and the last thing you want to do to a team that likes to get out on the break is press them. Butler hung 144 on a team because they pressed them on every play and that's BUTLER. KU did well in the game @Lawrence last year because they dropped back on defense early and often, not due to any type of press.

It's like they have a brand new coach and all new plays to learn... And no, they haven't been working on Prohm's sets all summer, since practice doesn't start until October. Coaches have very limited contact with players over the summer and they are mostly out recruiting in the summer.

Dude, R-E-L-A-X. This is still a new system & a new offense. Even though it maybe be SIMILAR to Hoiball, it still has different plays. Players are still trying to adjust to ALL of it. It's a 1st year coach with a 1st year system. It takes an adjusting period for EVERYONE including the upper classmen.

It is constant with you. Just because the guy states some concerns and positives doesn't mean he is worked up. You ALWAYS blow things out of proportion. I think if anyone on this board needs to R-E-L-A-X it is you. Relax and read the posts. I really don't think the OP was being impatient or unrealistic, just general observations.

Ya, IIRC, the second game against Kansas, it was a focus to sprint back down on defense because McKay made the Jayhawks his ***** in transition the first game.

Thought they looked just a little rusty in their press break. As the game went on they got more and more comfortable in it, but ISU is just a terrible team to press. Good to get one of these teams early at home instead of trying to work that stuff out on the road.

I've just watched the games on CyclonesTV, but I've heard Prohm a few times but other than that his sideline demeanor seems similar to Fred's. Not much jawing at the refs and during TO's he's calmly talking to the team like Fred did.

If you're at the games does his demeanor seem that much different?

Think Chattanooga is a good team, I was impressed by how in control ISU was the entire game.

I don't think it's anything to worry about. Just coaching style. If we looked lost on the court while he was yelling out plays, then it'd be concerning. I laugh because I usually can only make out "Dooly" every time.

I like our ball movement this year. It seems like each game we have had 2 or 3 possessions were the ball is moved from seamlessly from side to side leading to a wide open shot. Reminds me of Babb's senior season.

It seems like we are taking smarter threes this year. Not sure if that is coaching style or a year of maturity. I loved that we realized it wasn't our night from deep against CU, and we drove hard. I know this is what the defense was dictating to us, but we did a great job of taking advantage.

I like what we have shown so far, especially this early against what I see as a tournament team.... My disappointment last night was the lack of running plays at the end of the game when we went a little cold shooting. And overall the rebounding(thought last nights effort there was more back to last year).... I get that it is non-conference mode and getting up for every game for the whole game is tough, but those were my criticisms from last night.

Huh? Where's Tuco at I need to ask him if he has seen KU press in the entire Bill Self era when not trailing by more than 10 or within the last 2 minutes of a game that they are down in.

edit: Tuco already cleared this up should have known he can smell people typing "KU".

As far as OU goes I don't think they ever press either.
