What's wild about Duluth and the North Shore is that it has it's own climate that's even distinct from the rest of the Minnesota north woods. We were mountain biking the Cuyuna trails in Crosby last summer and it was pushing 90. Duluth was topping out at 65.
I love Cuyuna and Crosby

Had some pretty good food last time we were there:

OMC Smokehouse for barbecue
Love Creamery for some good ice cream
New Scenic Cafe along old 61 about halfway to Two Harbors. A little spendy, but some Norwegian offerings on the menu among other good stuff.
190 Coffee and Tea, very hipstery coffee joint, but good
Thirsty Pagan Brewery in Superior. Basically a pizza and beer place. If you like dill pickles, you HAVE to get the pickle pizza with bacon.
Duluth Grill, solid brunch with a korean-style bowl that was featured in the Tribune

And a brewery on seemingly every other block. Lots of good food and drink to be had.

Follow up question. Which is the best part of MN, or ND, or WI, or MI to spend the summers to escape this ridiculous heat?

Detroit Lakes, MN? Others?
North shore of MN or the U.P. of Michigan.

Man, I went to OMC and had a bad experience. Just not good super dry ribs. I'd heard so much hype and was very disappointed.

if it's specifically to escape the heat? The North Shore is your best choice. If you just want to be near a lake you can get into, that depends upon what else you want in the vicinity and how isolated you want to be.

Duluth is nice. Lift bridge museums, etc.

Put me down for Grand Marais. Wonderful small town. Sven & Ole’s pizza. Taco place is good too. Has an interesting art scene. Just wandering the lakeshore. Relaxing, beautiful, and wonderful people.
To add on to this - My Sisters Place has great burgers and food. Sven & Oles - check to make sure they are open. They've been extremely short staffed since covid, but a very sentimental place for me, and great food.

Also try the SOB cafe. Mediocre food. Cheap. Ask for the hash browns with cheese, and you'll get a perfecrly square piece of American cheese melted on them after the fact. Super cheap.and the quantity is huge. Also great service. Cash only.

Go 7p the Gubflint and hike Caribou Trail, and see Rose Lake Falls on the stairway portage.
