Leave early enough driving up the north shore so you can find parking at the state parks, it gets full fast. Duluth is an underrated summer trip. Our family always loves it there. Kids ask to go back all the time.
The parking lot for the High Falls/Grand Portage State Park is directly before the customs crossing, The Pigeon River is the border, so one would have to cross the river to get into Canada. Pretty difficult to cross the border by accident!!Grand Portage is a MN city, and Grand Portage State Park is just before the border. No passport necessary.
Me too. Highly recommend it . . . especially with minimal training.I ran a marathon there, but you probably don't want to do that on short notice.
Especially this week when it'll be in the 70's there vs near 100 in the citiesI haven't ventured North in some time. This thread makes me want to do a roadie.

Has to be the longest wooden staircase I’ve ever been on. Lots of fun to race the kids to the top. Lots of mosquitos too, but that goes without saying. The entire North Shore is a trip in itself. The city of Duluth is great, but it can be pricy especially in Canal Park. There are many state parks along the North Shore, most with great hiking areas and waterfalls. If you can make your way up to Lutsen Mountain, they have a nice alpine slide and some great views of the lake.
My personal favorite waterfall is Devil's Kettle in Magney State Park. This is a dual waterfall where nobody knew where one side of the waterfall emptied out until the last few years. The waterfall appears to fall into a hole and disapear. It's quite a drive from Duluth, but one could easily spend an entire week just on the North Shore
You can find the original border markers at the park. My wife and I went the second weekend in June...highs in the 40s and 50s made it hard to ride bikes. Still, one of our favorite places to visit. Highway 61 north is a great drive!I went Memorial weekend and it was still winter, but it was summer 15 minutes southeast. The wife and I were not prepared.
Some of the grains of sand on the beach are very large.Duluth is nice but the North Shore is awesome. Grand Marais is so cool. Went with my in-laws and 2 young children last year so the best part was being able to sit on the beach over looking the lake listening to music without having to talk to anyone and have the kids play in the sand without me. I can't wait to go back.
Apologies. Thinking of the NS makes me emotional and I just wanted to share some pics.
