It doesn't matter the type of player you were when it comes to coaching. Mark Mangino never even played college ball. From a friend who plays on GV, Flynn is an awesome coach. This is coming from a kid who's dad is a very successful head coach in the junior college ranks.

That's a good bit of info. Coaching is about teaching and a good teacher is a unique talent. If you can spot a good teacher early on, kudu's to you. Being a successful head coach is all about spotting people with unique teaching abilities and then surrounding yourself with those people and then bringing them all together as a successful coaching team.

Some of the best coaches were very mediocre players. Most of the great players make horrible coaches. (Which is why I think a lot of us were weary of hiring Fred for bb but he is the exception rather than the rule.)

If true, we have LOTS of hall of fame coaches in waiting.

SpokaneCy, I don't know exactly what is was, but those articles made me a lot more comfortable with coach k being OC.

The thing for me is he's obviously thought deeply about his philosophy and can explain it beyond the basic platitudes. No clue if he's the guy but I would kill to have an offensive identity.

Quote from Darius Lee-Campbell (I just got off the phone with him, working on story now).

“We talked about all of the offenses that he has been a part of in his coaching career. When Coach Mess got fired, I called Coach K to see what was up. He told me that they weren’t going to change the offense around. They were basically going to take the last two games. That’s what they will be doing in the future.”

Can someone characterize what our offense was the last 2 games? Even though they were against the 2 worst defenses in the nation what was different from the rest of the year?

I'm not sure that Austin would succeed here but he is an interesting person. He came to Grand View as a position coach and was elevated to OC very quickly. Mike Woodley evidently saw his potential. Grand View's offense was decimated by graduation and Austin had to about start from scratch. He did and two seasons later he is undefeated and in the National Championship game. Austin is a very smart hard worker. He was able to switch from QB to WR at Iowa State and be very successful at it. He runs a very up tempo type offense that he has learned from Iowa State and has tweaked it along the way.

He started coaching at the High School level in Houston and after the first year was made defensive coordinator. Two separate coaches realized his potential and immediately elevated him to a coordinator's spot. Those accomplishments I think makes him a person who deserves a closer look. Evidently he is a person who does not mess around, but jumps in and with hard work and smarts just succeeds. Reminds me of another successful coach that we have.

Austin Flynn - Iowa State University Athletics Official Web Site - www.CYCLONES.com - The home of Iowa State Cyclone Sports

I had originally not paid any attention to him until his name came up in this thread. I got to checking him out online and came upon this article:

The Grand Views : Flynn moves to Iowa; brings family, offense with him

That raised my eyebrows a bit. He might just fit into the ISU system as a QB coach. And then there is this:
Update on Former Iowa State Cyclone Austin Flynn | Go Iowa State - Iowa State Apparel, Cyclone Merchandise, ISU Clothing

Anyone with a wife that hot has to have something going for him!
Mobile high five.

I think bringing in Austin as a position coach would be a perfect fit. He has beaten down the recruiting path. Pretty sure Woodley and Rhoads are close.

I find it a bit interesting that Austin Flynn is from Spring, TX a suburb of Houston. His wife is from Houston and was a Texan cheerleader. Austin's family and his wife's family is in Houston. Austin had a coaching position with a Houston high school after graduating from ISU and it would seem as though those are pretty strong ties to that area. Then all of a sudden he throws all of that out the window and relocates to Des Moines for a position coach job with Grand View. hmmmmmm...

Did he make the move with a bigger apple in sight? Austin was an academic All-American at ISU so he's not dumb. I'm sure that Woodley and other contacts at ISU have been advising him on good career moves. Did he make the move to Grand View so as to make his exploits more noticeable to the coaches at ISU or maybe to more easily slide into a role at ISU just up the highway? I'm just freeform thinking here. I have no answers to those questions but the overall situation is very intriguing.

Mike Woodley, the Grand View head coach, was an assistant at ISU for nine years and also coached high school football in Houston. He lives in Urbandale, by the way (you don't suppose that Flynn lives there too). Maybe Austin would go for a "WR"/recruiter/"QB" coach position at ISU. Pretty convenient if you ask me. (You may have to read between the lines a bit there) Also, our latest 2014 QB recruit plays at Spring, TX high school.

Just a bunch of nosing around the internet here. As Sergeant Schultz was fond of saying: "I know Nothing!"

I think you are reading into things too much. I would love to have Flynn here. People say that he coaches a completely differently level of football. So? He is still coaching college athletes who think and act like college kids. Its not like he has Alabama talent playing against teams that are that much worse. He knows what he is doing.

Still used the zone read but used it less. Also threw the ball down field more. It seemed like whoever was calling plays was doing a better job of allowing Grant to get into a tempo on offense.

The offense took how many possessions before it finally got a first down vs WVU? Seven? I don't want an offense like that ever again.

Simply, they were against the 2 worst defenses in the nation that is probably all, that and the 7* temp at the jack was probably a big factor too.

Yes, cannot have it both ways. If K was calling the plays that led to the great comeback, then was he also calling the plays in the first half when we looked like warmed over dog crap.

True but at least adjustments were made after 2 quarters vs calling the same crap for two yrs.
