There is enough talent on this team to have beaten Iowa, Toledo, and TTU. From what I've seen K. State and WVU are also beatable with what we have. That is potentially an 8 win season if this team had fully reached its maximum potential.

Those who lament the talent gap or think that ISU will never become consistently successful don't realize that the difference from a successful program and a below average one are marginally small.

We just need the right person to lead it.

I cannot believe that JP or any athletic director does not have a reserve fund for buyouts. And I doubt it's due to the coach all at once. Of all things, the buyout is probably not the first consideration in firing a coach, especially with the increase in TV revenues these past several years.

Firing coaches happens all the time, as does paying the buyouts. It's something an AD needs to plan for.

Yeah I'm sure the Big12 will fall flat during bowl season again. But whether we play nobody's or not, we spent half the season with an OC that wanted to do things his way and not the way the rest of the staff wanted to do. With that kind of disfunction JP isn't going to make a rash decision to fire Rhoads. Even if the offense has sucked since 2010.

The change in the OC has not made a discernible difference to date. It's very possible the perceived dysfunction is the responsibility of Rhoads.

Quite likely. Our defense was the big part in beating them.

Not likely. Lanning was the big difference offensively. There is no way we would have won that game with Sam at QB. It wouldn't have happened.

Agreed. I'm just saying that everyone needs to chill on the whole fire Rhoads talk. Everyone talks about how the fan base is so strong and the fans deserve a winner. Well I would argue that excitement in football increased to what it is now solely because of Rhoads. The fans have kept coming obviously, and the program has fallen off in the w/l column for many reasons. A knee-jerk reaction to get rid of Rhoads might possibly kill fan base excitement if we were to hire a guy that doesn't get us to the 6-6 consistent record with the occasional 8-4 season. Maybe the next head coach isn't as passionate or care as much about Iowa State football like Rhoads does. The *****ing and moaning would only continue.

Passion or not, he has 2 jobs as the ISU football coach, mentor 18-22 year olds as student athletes and win football games.

Really don't care about the man of passion part.

Passionless winners > Passion boy winners
Passion boy winners = passionless losers

You can't assume we wouldn't have beat them, either. The amazing part of that game was the defensive shutout, not offensive production.

Lanning running the ball and keeping the defense fresh won that game. Look at the difference between the OU and UT games, at OU, the defense forced turnovers and got stops early but as the offense failed to the keep the ball, they wore down and OU attacked. It goes a lot deeper than saying the QB did this or that, Joel was the defenses best friend against Texas. The question would be appropriate to ask would we have won with Sam playing QB, IMO that's a no. He would have faltered against that UT pass rush. .

Just to refresh everyone's memory, here's an excerpt of an article quoting Pollard's boss in December 2014. Not saying it won't happen, but it will take lots of spin from the Pres to explain how a 3 or 4 win season gets him another year.

The Cyclone football team finished the 2014 season with just two wins. Leath says coach Paul Rhoads understands “it’s a business†and a turn-around is expected next season.
“I’d like to get our football program where it needs to be, which is representative of a first-class university. We’re not there. The last two seasons were clearly disappointing,†Leath says. “As to Paul’s future, I can’t predict that. He knows, (ISU athletics director Jamie Pollard) knows that we want a first-class, winning program and that’s where we’ve got to be and hopefully he’s the guy to get us there, but either way, we’ve got to get there.â€
Leath says you don’t want to win a way that you can’t be proud of and he’s proud of Rhoads and how the football players are doing in their classes, but winning on the football field is the ultimate goal. Leath made his comments Friday on Iowa Public Television’s “Iowa Press†program.

Yeah but several posters here (including this thread) swear Rhoads will be back no matter what and that Pollard and Iowa State have no interest in winning...why should we believe the president of the school over them!

7 years, 1 winning season, 5 wins the last 2 years, 2 conference wins in 2 years....that says knee jerk reaction to you?

Yea, who knows. A big part of that win was dominating the time of possession. Our defense totally shut them down though. Only got past the 50 once not including in garbage time. I can't say confidently that we would have won.
