WTF is he doing now? To hear him this morning, he was dancing on ISU's grave. What is this?

This morning was if Nebraska joined the Big Ten, and if ISU were not in the Big Ten, then the Iowa-ISU rivalry would weaken and become less significant than Iowa-Nebraska.

However, in pondering the ISU to the Big Ten (Culver, other pols.) that is in the news, I am just trying to think it through and find some logic to it...and on the academic side, there is logic.

Jon -- Thanks for the thread over on HN. Much appreciated by a vast majority of us at CF!

He probably got some heat for his comments about the rivalry game this morning and was told to play nice.

LOL. You don't know me well. If I had gotten some heat, it wouldn't cause me to write what I wrote. It would probably have the opposite effect. Our bosses let us do what we do; try and entertain people. They rarely, rarely get in the way of that on opinion related issues.

Stupid question: Could ISU strike a deal with the B10 in which ISU get's a 50% share of tv revenue? It seems that wouldn't take away from the other eleven members share and increases our tv revenue from 7M to 11M.

I know Purdue is also a top (maybe THE top) engineering school. Does the Big 10 even touch Ag? Indiana maybe?

Many of the members of the Big 10 have Ag programs; Purdue is likely the best the Big 10 has to offer. Nothing much to write home about in comparison to ISU but they have them.

As I've said about ISU fans who are crazy if they don't think ISU to the Big 10 is an awesome situation.. so are Hawkeye fans who don't feel the same way.

Speaking purely for football, how is trading that non-conference game for an in-conference game at the end of the season during rivalry week a bad thing? That should be seen as a great thing by both fanbases. There's at least potential for a bit more national exposure there, especially if one or both of the teams are having a great year.
On that same token, one more game against each other every year all of the other sports.

But if there is actually academic consideration involved here, ISU (between academics and geography), should be in consideration. Jon is right about the AG part of things, of which I believe ISU would be a leader of in the Big 10. ISU would also join some great engineering institutions in the Big 10 like Illinois, Purdue, and Northwestern, and certainly ranks with or above those schools (Illinois is probably highest rated, I think..). And if you want to talk about grant money... engineering is where it's at. So between the fuels industry (TONS of money), and engineering in general.. there's more firepower with ISU joining the Big 10 in giving that conference leverage for grants.

The only way I can see ISU to the Big 10 is if they were expanding to 16. They would add the big tv sets in Mizzou, Nebby, and Rutgers. Then they would add the most obvious choice in Notre Dame. Then they could pick a school like ISU that makes a TON of sense for academic reasons.

I think baseball is the ONLY ATHLETICS way that ISU doesn't fit the Big10 (maybe some other sports I don't know about). We'd be in the "middle half" of the league in most sports. We wouldn't be the worst team in any sport.

Non-sports? I think TV sets is the only way that ISU looks unattractive to the Big10.

I'm not calling you out (at all) but is this all it takes - one nice thing said about ISU, and the shorts come down? Judge him on his balance of work. I have no idea where this realization of his (or Deace's) is going, but I'm sure he is not sincere. You are being played. He probably got some heat for his comments about the rivalry game this morning and was told to play nice.

Never said I did. What's the incentive?

I can't speak for Jon in terms of incentive but as a Hawkeye fan I am a even bigger fan of the state of Iowa and this could be bad for the state. To a lesser extent as one of our bitter rivals I have a grudging respect / love - hate thing going with you guys and I don't want to see that ruined because of this. On a personally selfish level I would like to see you guys as part of a conference that many of you have bad mouthed for years. :jimlad:

ISU does not stand a chance in this if the Big 10 does anything less than 16.

I've always appreciated Jon. When it comes right down to it, he's treats ISU better than the other media (save for Chris), he gives us a fair shake.

Yes, he's a hawk fan, but he doesn't try to hide it. Deace is worse because he's not an ISU fan, he's a michigan fan who saw an opportunity to make some money with ISU and took it, proceeding to act like a fan. In reality, Deace is a great host on WHO, he's a perfect conspiracy theorist. But it doesn't play on KXNO.

While Jon gets in his little digs just like every hawk fan does, he does better interviews with ADJP or any of the coaches than the other media do.

This post is nothing new for him, he's never said ISU doesn't deserve to be in the Big 10, but he has stated the obvious ---- they ain't gonna end up there.

While it might seem like a good way to get in, you don't want to enter that way, because then you'll always be seen as the desperate, second class citizen.

I know very little about these things... so forgive me.

While I agree that athletically ISU bring very few $$$ to the table, even fewer tv sets, prestige, etc.... it would seem that alot of the posturing by many is that conference affliation goes well beyond athletics and into research and $$$ there. Many times over the amount of money athletics bring in. Wouldn't ISU be a prime player with our engineering and ag sciences?

I know Purdue is also a top (maybe THE top) engineering school. Does the Big 10 even touch Ag? Indiana maybe?

Indiana is FAR from an Ag school..... They're just like Iowa...

Purdue and Illinois are probably the Ag schools they have. Both are VERY good schools academically also.

It makes sense in every area, from an athletic standpoint and an academic standpoint, but adding more TV sets which is unfortunately the driving factor.

I don't think TV sets are as powerful as they are being perceived.

Market Rankings based on Nielsen Ratings 2009-2010:

St. Louis: 21

Kansas City: 32

Ames-Des Moines: 72

Omaha: 76

Cedar Rapids-Waterloo-Iowa City-Dubuque: 88 (Just for perspective)

Lincoln & Hastings-Kearney: 105

Columbia-Jefferson City: 137

http://blog.nielsen.com/nielsenwire/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/2009-2010-dma-ranks.pdf

Now, look at this article the Big 10 Network released last December.
Big Ten Network Football Telecasts Enjoy Ratings Increase in 2009 - Big Ten Network
Ratings were up - about 4% of TVs were tuned in on Saturdays (2.3% households in the afternoons and 1.7% households in primetime). These numbers were based out of 9 markets: Chicago, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, Detroit, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Minneapolis and Pittsburgh. I'm not too impressed by reaching 4% of viewers in the Big 10 footprint.

My biggest question is, how can the Big 10 (and Iowa fans to a certain extent) claim they already have the Ames/Des Moines market covered, but believe the only way to get the St. Louis/Kansas City markets is to add Missouri?

Because the Big 10 believes they can force the Missouri cable operators to bump the BTN from sports tier to basic tier, bringing in significantly more money for the conference.
