Montgomery is still my favorite, but Fran would be pretty sweet.
On one level this is probably a very unfair statement to make; but wouldn't hiring Montgomery be sort like hiring Chizik. Top assistant coach that at the first offer from a better program would likely be gone.
I don't get all the people eliminating winning coaches because they think they don't like the style of play.
winning matters. how many points you score while winning doesn't.
I have a similar feeling about hiring an assistant from an MSU or Duke type program. Though my concern isn't them getting hired away before they succeed (lightening isn't going to strike thrice!), but it would be that they don't know how to win here. I don't think the Chiz really realized how to win at a program like ISU. You need to find the diamond in the rough players, you need to develop talent, you need to coach up the team, and you need to hire the right staff to pull it together.
This is the truth. No one would complain about Brad Stevens, even if his style is boring. I will say though, if a coach is just mediocre, then it is a far better recruiting pitch if they play up tempo.
I think your point is valid about Collins from Duke. Duke recruits elite players and their system is based on guys making plays. I can't recall a Coach K assistant who has gone on and succeeded somewhere else (e.g. Amaker, Snyder, Dawkins).
I wouldn't make that same statement about MSU. While MSU does recruit some elite recruits, Izzo brings in some blue collar type of kids. If you look around Izzo has turned out a couple good assistants in Crean & Gregory. IMO the Izzo recipe for success is what ISU needs: defense, rebounding, fast break when possible but if its not there- an effective half court offense.
I love winning, but I don't want to fall asleep watching it. Give me an up tempo style any day. If I wanted to watch a slow paced game, defensive, low scoring game...I'd watch hockey. I want to have fun at games and that involves both winning AND a high powered offense.
this is disappointing, and an example of how some people will ALWAYS complain about something.
I guarantee there will be people on this site who don't like the hire, regardless of who it is.
